I think any route operating at least 2 trains an hour in its entirety should be electrified, including Goblin.

That's a hell of a lot of electrification. That would include the Valley Lines, all the MML, the Chiltern system, all the XC gaps, all of Transpennine, pretty much everything in Lancs and South and West Yorks to name just a few.

Still, I can't actually think of a non-electrified line with 2tph+ that someone on here hasn't given a convincing case that it should be electrified. :D

Indeed, Modern Railways did a similar feature about 18 months ago, mainly concentrating on "in-fill" electrifications.

It would in several instances provide faster journeys and certainly be better for the environment. I gather 37% of National Rail is currently electrified, much less than most of the continent of Europe. We do have more modern rolling stock than some countries, such as France, where the age of commuter trains is not widely advertised.

Still, there are few services as frequent as Goblin that have not been electrified.

The LO and Chiltern ones should be identical other than cosmetics though, so that's odd. Are they differently geared? Odd since I thought the LO and Chilterns were both 75mph maximum but the LMs were 100mph.

Do you find them more sluggish than the 150s?

The Chiltern 172s are geared for 100mph running now due to the fact, Chiltern have realized that in periods of stock shortage, they could make it up to Birmingham just like the 165s do but those are 75mph capable but the max line speed is 100mph, so journey times are increased and passengers are left unhappy.

I did hear a rumor that the 165s are due to be re-geared for 90mph running.

I'm struggling to think of many lines that people on here haven't suggested be electrified at one stage or another, even infrequent ones (to be used for diversionary purposes etc).

I think that any self contained half hourly service should be a good "benchmark" for electrification. There are some more frequent diesel routes, but these have infrequent "split ends" (e.g. four/hour on the core TPE North, but you'd have to wire to Hull/ Scarborough/ Middlesbrough to get that benefit, none of which are as frequent).

GOBLIN is a self contained route, so I'd suggest it was more of a priority than services which have a more frequent core elsewhere. Yes, it has some tunnels/ embankments/ viaducts, but so do many electrified lines.
