it's a small shame to not have it included but I agree the benefits are largely enthusiasts and some cases of showing delays on subsequent trips
I still think the situation whereby you are leaving from a (city-centre, for example) terminus, or one or two stops out from such a terminus, you're waiting in the cold and your bus is late, and you'd like to to know where the incoming vehicle likely to form your outbound journey is, is something genuinely useful and I speak as a passenger, not just as an enthusiast. I've been in this situation myself more than once.It only really works if you're boarding early on in a journey but that's where some intervention is more likely. For anyone boarding anywhere else, they'll only look closer to the time where that step-up is now tracking instead. Otherwise, the main audience for such a tool is the enthusiast fraternity, looking to see what journeys a bus is (hopefully) going to operate.
I'd rather just have the ability to look ahead really. That's what I'm bothered about if I'm heading somewhere new!
OK, it's not going to be right 100% of the time, but 9 out of 10 times it probably is based on my observations of how rigidly vehicles stick to a working (I'd say they stick to intended workings about 90% of the time, i.e. deviate perhaps once every two weeks, and this is a city-centre location where interworking is quite extensive).
However I appreciate the difficulties in obtaining block info and accept that automated analysis of live bus running data may be required to derive it independently.
