There was something in the news about it recently, apparently. No idea what, though.

Probably just lamenting its non existence! It has been a missed opportunity though, but i often wonder if Glasgow St Enoch was still on the go whether we would still be concerned about it. Is it true that Glasgow Central absorbed almost all its services after its closure?

Yes it did. But I have to wonder how much more can Central take as surely they can't keep building new platforms whenever the need arises for more. Eventually, a new station might be in order.

I think Central could take more yet, i think another Glasgow terminal would be nothing more than a luxury, however much it would be great. Central is a well built station compared to Queen St and the other former terminals though.

I'm also struggling to come up with a site of a new terminal. To re-open St Enoch, surely they'd have to get rid of that disastrous shopping centre that stole the station's name!

Come to think of it, since privatization, has there been a new big terminus built anywhere in Britain?

I'd go with that, a heap of s***e is st enoch shopping centre. You're right though, cannot think of a place to build another terminal.

There are loads of places to build another station, the issue would be the cost of purchasing land and property

Personally, the entrance at Glasgow Central should be put back to what it was many years ago, thus widening back to two bridges
Therefore instead of trains stacking behind each other in the peak periods they can proceed to much nearer the station

CrossRail was in the press due its demise confirmation from Transport Scotland
With the revised Glasgow Central - Edinburgh service and the electrification via A2B, the demand for these services has had to be revised (taking into account the demand for the new Alloa services, which caught Transport Scotland by surprise)

Instead the investment is being put into a three phased improvement in the Central belt; Glasgow QS - Edinburgh A, Glasgow North B, Glasgow South
Ground work has now commenced on the Glasgow QS - Edinburgh electrification

I think Central could take more yet

It could also lose a few services, if the Whifflets get wired and sent through the low level tunnels

As for a new terminal in central Glasgow, its already has two train termini and one bus station, none of which are near each other or served by the Subway - how much more complicated do they want to make it?

Instead of adding more services into Central, are there ways of extending existing services further out (e.g. extend the Newton via Mount Florida service to Hamilton, extend the Barrhead services to Kilmarnock once the loops are installed etc etc (all of which would mean no more expensive capacity needed at Central)

I might raise that at the next electification update
Glasgow C LL - Whifflet - Motherwell - Newton
Glasgow C LL - Uddingston - Motherwell - Lanark
Glasgow C LL - Newton - Larkhall
Glasgow C LL - Newton - Motherwell - Whifflet

That in effect gives three commuter routes between Glasgow C LL and Motherwell

The Whifflets leaving the high level after electrification has been on the cards for years, so it wont really surprise me when and if it happens, though i would expect a total recast of timetabling on the Argyle line to do so. Not sure about running Barrheads all the way to killie though, after the evening peak this happens anyway with killies being all stops up and down. Re-instating the original bridge extended from 1 and 2 carriage sidings isn't a bad idea but would surely be nothing more than a luxury unless many further service enhancements/creations are planned. For the record also with regards to a site for a new terminus, i was struggling to think of somewhere currently unused and of a sufficient size already in the city centre without worrying too much about purchasing and demolition.

I was thinking that the loops on the Killie line would mean an increased frequency into Ayrshire, but they might struggle to fit in more paths into Central

Yes, i see what you mean now. Though to be fair, Killie has had quite a massive service enhancement already, and it doesn't seem to have had such a massive effect on passenger numbers, though i await them with interest. Another dynamic loop and you would as well re-doubling all the way! The installation of it has improved the regulation of services no end though. No more ten minute waits at Lugton box( well not many anyway!) :)

Got a idea the GARL project would be right on again if there,s a change of administration at next years 2011 Scottish Goverment elections.

It would; but that may depend if TS have sold all the CPO'd land by then in which case bthe costs rise again.

It could. Definitely Labour would be wanting to resurrect the idea. However, given the spending cuts, whether or not they're able to is another matter altogether. As already mentioned, selling off the land may well make it prohibitively expensive.

Remember, also, that the Paisley corridor upgrades are to continue regardless. So the potential for more trains to Ayrshire and Inverclyde could also scupper plans; as much as I've always supported the idea of GARL, I always thought 4tph to Glasgow Airport via Paisley was a poor use of valuable paths.

Seems Labour have released their..something after their conference at Oban which shows what they'll "do" should they win, and GARL is on that list. Personally, I'd like to see it reinstated, but I won't be putting my vote in for Labour. :)
