Not an option on the West Highland Line. Although, they have toilets on board, but you know what I'm trying to say.

Why would you have a better journey without a toilet? Have you ever needed the toilet really bad to find out you're on a 455 and the closet thing to a toilet is 10mins to the next station!? Its criminal to have trains without toilets, it really is.

Which begs the question why wouldn't you go before you got on? There's no excuse when you're talking about 455 territory, as there's always a toilet nearby.

What if you dont know the area around? Are you just meant to whip it out behind a bush somewhere? Even worse if you're a women.

If trains without lavatories worked on the ECML, or the S&C, or West Highland or suchlike, I could understand your point.

As it is, I believe they work on routes around London where stops are frequent and very few people will have ap tickets. Put in other terms would yuo expect the tube to have bogs on trains?

AP on a 455??? You must be kidding

You may be on the 455 to get to Waterloo or something. You may say the same for a 319, A AP on a 319 you say?! Yes, to get to the wonderful choice of London Termini.

So you're saying that seat reservations are available on 319s and 455s? News to me...

No, I'm saying you have to be on that timed train that you booked. May not be as strict as an Intercity service but still... I don't see why you're going out your way to find every fault with every post of mine here?

You don't have to be on that train if seats aren't booked, you could travel earlier if you wanted, but obviously you are right in saying you may not want to travel any later than your booked train as you may not be covered in the event of delay.

What are the refurbed 322s like? Only been on an old 'Stansted Skytrain' one.

A bit pink inside, comfortable seats, lots of standing space.. Fine for the 35 min trips from Edinburgh-North Berwick. for the full drag over to Glasgow they are a bit 'suburban' but they are also not the quickest journey, so if you choose to go the full distance it is either convenience or laziness that appeals to you. these 2 trips a day are actually ECS balancing moves for each 322 to receive some maintenance attention at Shields depot (Edinburgh has no EMU maintenance beyond cleaning, which is done in teh station.

So that's why Glasgow gets what seems like a random, sporadic service.

See http://www.thejunction.org.uk/ under diagrams and 322 fleet Dec07. Remember there are 5 rakes and 4 diagrams (the 5th one is no longer for overhaul at Hunslett-Barclay - that is an error on the site). But one unit is in for maintenance each day (GW175), with a second (GW173) being maintained between 10 & 2 each day at Corkerhill, and GW174 returning to Glasgow at 8pm, going to Shields Depot and then forming the GW171 0705 service the following morning.

IIRC the units cycle through the 4 diagrams, such that a unit starting on G171 from Shields Depot on day 1 has 'maintenance' on day 3 at Corkerhill, before returning to Shields on day 4 and staying until day 6, when the cycle starts over.

The service is such that if any unit breaks dopwn, then the 'spare' Edinburgh unit can drag it to Shields ECS out of the normal maintenance sequence without disrupting teh service - note how GW171 sits 'spare' at Waverley from 0945 to 1714 each day! Only 3 units are actually required to run the basic service from north Berwick to Edinburgh, and if teh journey time could be cut to 30min 9perhaps if the mooted local service to Dunbar starts up, and some stops can be transfered to that service, without disrupting the ICEC / XC services, it could be possible for both servcies to ahve journey times on 30 minutes and thus teh service coudl be achieved without any increase in units, but merely through better stock deployment. IIRC teh issue is to do with capacity into the east end of Waverley which is being reserved for the future Borders rail link, whose future is far from certain.

Would you choose the longer journey in less comfort that can be achieved with GNER / XC via Carstairs, or FSR 170 via Falkirk if you were going end to end. The service does provide some commuter opportunity between Carstairs and Edinburgh but you would have to have very fixed shifts for it to be feasible.

I usually go via Carstairs :p But I'm usually travelling on the 0914 ex Motherwell and return on a GNER or via Falkirk Grahamston to save me some money.

I wish the link were faster, and I could see a good service if there were a high(er) speed link avoiding Carstairs, but then Carstairs residents would moan I would imagine

Carstairs only has the Norh Berwick stopper I think as a regular train? Maybe a couple of peak trains too? Few GNER / XC / VWC trains stop there.

There is talk of a caledonian express via Shots, running as a semi fast in 60 minutes. How is Edinburgh -Glasgow via Falkirk G'ston cheaper when the end points are the same, or do you buy it as two tickets?
