That was a private operator that bought the 86s, not BDZ, so it shiouldn't have anything to do with the Govt. defaulting.

I don't think it will fit on the UK loading gauge as I'm pretty sure they have the Berne loading gauge!
Which, by the way is a hell of a lot bigger than the UK! Considering the A stock on the Metropolitan line-soon to be replaced by the S stock- is currently the UK's widest train!

On a more serious note, I'd like to see Stadler tackle the UK market of regional trains at some point in the future. Not that Siemens or Bombardier are incapable or anything, it's just another option to consider.

Yes, a larger pool of bidders for franchises can only be a good thing!

However, Stadler is a manufacturer of regional EMUs/DMUs and I'd like to see them come up with a design for a unit for UK gauge.

Yep, I forgot to add that they probably will manufacture trains to run on UK loading gauge. However, should ERTMS be successful and gets rolled out on all fleet in the UK I reckon it won't be long before they start to restructure UKs railways to fit Berne Plus gauge.
It would require huge investment and only selected main lines would be done but I wouldn't put that out of the books over the next 100 years.

yes, but it's run on their behalf by DBS (and before that bty DRS). They did organise charters for a brief while, but they were run by DRS.

That wouldn't be a problem for them, they build a lot of stock for the Swiss Narrow Gauge lines where each design will have a run of about 3 or 4 units.

For example this - http://www.stadlerrail.com/en/references/zentralbahn-7-teiler/ for the Zentralbahn to replace their hauled stock (currently modern locos ancient coaches) - They are buying four 7 car units each of which has panorama windows in the roof and a buffet counter! Dimension wise it isn't far off UK size!

It would probably be cheaper to start from scratch if you wanted a Berne Gauge line in the UK. Rather than having to do a total rebuild of hundreds of Victorian structures with possession working.
