As we all know the Celsius temperature scale is based on the freezing point of water being 0 degrees and boiling point being 100.

The Farenheit scale has water freezing at 32 and boiling at 212. However, when Farenheit was originally devised it was based around certain events which occur at 0 and 96 on that scale. What are these events ?

NB there are two possible answers for the 0 point - I will accept either

Surely not, 0F is only -18°C! I've been out hillwalking in colder temps than that!

On reflection though, it might have been a record low temperature at the time wherever in Germany Herr Farenheit came from, presumably in the 1700s......

That was my thoughts. Perhaps the lowest temperature reliably recorded at the time.
