Maleme is one of the largest German military war cemeteries outside of Germany and France. It contains the graves of 4,465 German paratroopers killed during the Battle of Crete (operation Merkur) in 1941. It's a very beautiful and peaceful place by the former airfield near to the coast, immaculately maintained by the German war graves commission. It's about 20km west of the lovely port of Xhania.
