Maleme is one of the largest German military war cemeteries outside of Germany and France. It contains the graves of 4,465 German paratroopers killed during the Battle of Crete (operation Merkur) in 1941. It's a very beautiful and peaceful place by the former airfield near to the coast, immaculately maintained by the German war graves commission. It's about 20km west of the lovely port of Xhania.

That is correct. Not only was it the last UK death from smallpox but the last recorded death in the world.
Reginald Shooter was a microbiologist who led the team reporting into a death in Birmingham from smallpox in 1978. The virus probably escaping from a laboratory.
