Sorry, no -- Passover falls about a month later than Purim, and is about a different episode in Jewish history. However -- both Biblical stories, concern fraught situations between the Children of Israel; and governing folk belonging to other nations, who had power over them and wished them ill. The "casting lots" thing, is involved with such a malevolent plan on the part of the -- it's essentially just the one -- bad guy.

Is it about choosing a virgin to appease their enemy?

Seemingly no-one has mugged up on the book of Esther in the past two days -- time, I think, to wrap the question up.

That which is commemorated (@GRALISTAIR: please let us know, if you reckon me to have got anything wrong in the following) is reckoned to have taken place around the 5th century BC, in the Persian Empire. Many Jews lived there then, in exile and captivity but, that aside, mostly quite decently treated. Things went wrong for them, when the royal vizier of the then King Ahasuerus -- one Haman, seemingly a very "unsatisfactory person" as the man said -- conceived, for basically trivial reasons, a hatred toward Persia's Jews, and sought to have them exterminated. He managed to get the king's OK for this project; after which -- the "casting lots" bit -- he did that ritual to determine a propitious (for him) date on which the atrocity should be carried out. Fortunately, his plan was thwarted and he himself came to a bad end; the Jews have, re this episode, ever since celebrated the feast of Purim with thankfulness and rejoicing.

@GRALISTAIR: in your main post, you refrained from answering: feeling it -- if I'm correct -- unfair on potential others, to deploy your special knowledge of the matter; but with no factual answers from anyone else, I feel that you've earned the right to set the next question. Should you choose to continue your abstention; I reckon it's open floor.

Is that a Roman numeral?
Have an infinite number of monkeys been busy again?
An infinite number of monkeys would only need to be busy once.
Is this the counting system that goes: One. Two, Many, A Lot?

You could also have translated the Greek. It's your turn again and it's about time you set a question or even 2^16 + 1 questions.

Interesting fact - It can be constructed using only a straight edge and compasses but apparently it takes an awfully long time.

Point taken.

Why might element number 51 antimony and element number 74 Tungsten regularly appear on trivia/quiz night questions?

Sodium = 11
Potassium =19 less so because they are too easy?

MK is Cowper, not Cooper

If the Newton is Isaac, then Cambridge might be a good punt...

:oops: I'm sorry to say I've messed up. It should indeed be Cowper and Newton. Particularly embarrassing as I've been to the museum. Anyway I'm looking for a small town.
