The plot of the movie involves New York's last horsedrawn tram, which the baddies steal in an attempt to take over the line. Speedy brings it back in a madcap chase across the city, because, if the tram does not run, Pop Dillon will lose the lease.

To increase bass and treble. At lower volumes the human ear doesn't hear these frequencies as well so music played quietly sounds better, more natural with bass and treble boosted.

Classical music tends to have a much greater dynamic range than "popular" music and I find it is necessary to listen at a fairly high volume otherwise the quieter passages are almost inaudible. I certainly wouldn't want to listen to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 at low volume.
