That is correct. Upton Park F.C. represented Great Britain in the 1900 Olympics winning the gold medal by playing one match and beating Club Francais 4-0.
The torch is yours.
Wow! I don't know if that was a lucky guess or a memory from a seldom visited dark corner of my brain.

Next question:

How did Christian Bale prepare for his role in The Machinist?

Did he starve himself to the point of near death? (I may be thinking about another movie, I don’t think I’ve seen the machinist)

Not to the point of near death but he did exist on a diet of water, an apple and one cup of coffee per day and lost 28kg. Your turn...

After much thought I have come up with the following. Am I getting warm?

A novel by Desmond Bagley - ?
An alphabet letter - Χ (Greek alphabet: Chi) abbreviation for Christ
An online dating service - Christian connection
A Pilgrim - Christian, protagonist in The Pilgrim's Progress
Certain diners at a restaurant - The Last Supper?

I'm afraid not, the only Christian connection is regarding a pilgrim.

Desmond Bagley's novel is the Snow Tiger, an inquest into an avalanche resulting in many losing their lives, central to the novel is that the Ballard and Peterson families are already arch enemies without Ian Ballard undertaking a certain course of action. Charlie Peterson eventually beats up Ian Ballard, half killing him

the diners is an acronym

Well, I presume that the relevant action by Ian Ballard is deciding not to use the mine as a shelter from the avalanche. However, that doesn’t get me much further.

EDIT: Unless they all end in -inder, although I don’t see how.

The answer is a person's name
Well, he gets the girl, Peterson’s sister, but for the life of me I can’t remember her name, although it might begin with K. ( I won’t cheat and dig out my copy, which I sorted a few days ago.)

Can we go back to the original question. The romantic aspect of the Snow Tiger is based upon what story?
The diners are also mature and male

Is the correct answer.

The Snow Tiger uses the plot of lovers from two families at war with each other
R for Romeo in the NATO phonetic alphabet, eg Charlie Victor Romeo, CVR, or Cockpit Voice Recorder
Planet Romeo - online dating service for LGBT persons
Romeus is the late Latin for Romeo meaning "Pilgrim to Rome"
Retired Old Men Eating Out is the acronym.

I could have added a ballet with music by Prokofiev, West Side Story, or the play by Shakespeare.

Anyway, your floor
