The Schiehallion Experiment was intended to find out the mass of the Earth. I believe surveying of the Mason/Dixon line encountered gravitational anomalies from nearby mountains.

Mason and Dixon were British astronomers and surveyors working under the guidance of Nevil Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal, to determine where the disputed southern boundary of Pennsylvania should lie. The dispute arose because of conflicting royal grants in the 17th Century. In wrapping up their survey in 1765 they found systematic (non-random) closing errors which were highlighted in the data they passed back to London. British scientist Henry Cavendish (a fiend for precision) suggested that these might be due to the gravitational pull of the Allegheny Mountains. Maskelyne agreed and proposed using the effect to measure the mass of the earth, commissioning Mason to find a suitable site in the British Isles - hence the Schiehallion Experiment.

Well as a chemist this is a no-brainer. It is an absolute scale of thermodynamic temperature. Normally (always) I use Kelvin - so Boiling Point of water is 100 Centigrade or 373.16 Kelvin. 1 degree Kelvin difference is NUMERICALLY equal to 1 degree Centigrade difference. So water at 50 C = 323.16K and at 51 C = 324.16K

The Rankine scale is also an absolute scale but the difference between Kelvin and Rankine is in Fahrenheit .

671.6 Rankine is the boiling point of water = 212F = 100 C = 373.16K.

At standard pressure.

Sounds like something from Tiswas, to measure the custardness of custard pies!
If only it were so.
It measures how high you are (and I don’t mean above sea-level).
Well it is named after a variety of cannabis but that's not its purpose.
It measures a bang. More specifically a nuclear explosion.
