Staying on a musical and seasonal question, there is Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors. Amahl and his mother are living in absolute poverty until they are visited by the three kings following the star to Bethlehem to find the infant Christ.

In the production notes, Menotti made a stipulation regarding performances of Amahl. what was it?

Amahl must always be played by a boy
...is the right answer. Menotti was of the opinion that only another boy could understand the range of emotions Amahl must show during the performance. He wrote "It is the express wish of the composer that the role of Amahl should always be performed by a boy. Neither the musical nor the dramatic concept of the opera permits the substitution of a woman costumed as a child."
