If you mean that Japanese aircraft carrier that was sunk by an American submarine somewhere in the Pacific towards the end of WW2, that was not controversial. That was an Act of War.

That makes it about 60,000 tonnes which is bigger than almost all warships. I wonder if it was the ship sunk by a Pakistani submarine during the war with India. Was it an oil tanker which caused pollution?
You assume I mean controversy as in "wasn't legal" rather than just severe disagreement between parties.

I can see this isn't going to work as I'd hoped. So you two can fight over the floor by who responds first.
For what its worth the controversy I was after was until after the war the US Navy had no idea Shinano ever existed, at least as a carrier. When first reported Archerfish was credited with a cruiser as the USN thought it knew the location of every surviving carrier, when the captain drew a picture of the carrier they sunk it was eventually credited as a much smaller 28,000t escort carrier. It wasn't until after the war they became aware of the 69,000t converted Yamato class behemoth existed and it was finally credited to Archerfish and the captain awarded the Navy Cross and the ship the Presidential Unit Citation.
