I think it has something to do with woodpeckers as this was originally the ship's crest. The original HMS Warspite would have been made of wood as were the opposing vessels so the woodpecker would be making holes in them.

Correct, "spight" was the Elizabethan term for the common woodpecker and that is the accepted logic behind the name. The woodpecker lasted until 1919 officially but unofficially until 1945.
