So, if I may.

Going through my (digital) record collection, I have 10 tunes with only 3 characters in the title, be it alpha only or numeric only (no alpha/numeric combination). I give you the year and position the tune charted (UK), and any relevant note(s). The ‘individual/group’ refers to the name given to the artist for the tune and I've taken the liberty of giving them 'famous/obsscure' etc status, though this is of course subjective to a degree. The first two tunes are numeric only, the rest alpha only. Can you give me the song title & artist and then marry that up with that year/chart position. Some further clues may be needed along the way but let's cross that bridge when and if we reach it.

1. Year 1965, charted position 3 in the UK. Dashes omitted from the song title. Solo artist, obscure.
2. 1967, 14. Group, famous, but known as the solo artist + the group (e.g. 'Gerry & The Pacemakers').
3. 1970, 3. Solo artist, well-known.
4. 1970, 8. Group, very famous.
5. 1975, 6. Group, very famous.
6. 1975, 6. Solo artist, very obscure. Quirky and difficult, this one.
7. 1982, 9. Group, very famous.
8. 1983, 24. Group, obscure. The hardest to get, imo. Impress me.
9. 1985. Group, very famous. Not released as a single but from a double-platinum album.
10. 1999. Solo artist, very famous. Again, not released as a single but from a platinum movie soundtrack album. This is a cover version, with the original reaching position 1 in 1974 for a solo artist.

@Gloster has named the group/song but not the correct year, and @Caboose Class has named the song (10) but not the cover version artist.

I'll try to offer some more clues tomorrow morning if there are any outstanding answers to be had.

Solo artist - duh!!

Think I've found it now - Elvis Costello?

I think that No.2 is 007 by Desmond Dekker and the Aces

Could No.9 be S.O.S. by Go West?

And now to really impress you - No. 8 is Joy by A.K.A.

Elvis Costello & She is correct, and as mentioned previously first a hit for Charles Aznavour in 1974. 007 by Desmond Dekker & The Aces is also correct, and I'm almost impressed - Joy is correct and the band are called The Band AKA. Very well done.

No you don't, @MotCO, it's not I Do (etc).

Clue for number 9, and I think this gives the band away - their name has fewer characters than the song.

Number 6 essentially is about the singer wanting to buy some meat and involves a butcher giving him some backchat.

Ah, the 1985 misled me. U2 released The Unforgettable Fire in autumn 1984 (I remember it vividly as we went to a record shop in Llandudno to buy it whilst on our geography o level field trip) but I guess the song Bad became more widely known in summer 1985 when they played it - in a hastily extended version after Bono went into the crowd - at live aid.

You are of course correct re the date, and apologies for not getting it right - not sure why I said 1985 - as you say, it could be that I associated the song with LiveAid, for some reason.

Finally got it! No. 6 is DAT by Pluto Shervington - another one hit wonder! By the way the record was released in 1976 not 1975!!

Always liked Pete Murray. Yes, I do go back that far! I see old Pete is still alive and kicking, now aged 96.....but I digress......on to Question Time and the subject matter today is Foreign Languages.

Which foreign language precedes the following:-
