The following is less colourful than @Caboose Class's linguistic high-jinks; but might perhaps be easier ...


Please name the thirteen Colonies which in 1776 declared independence from Britain, and in time became the first thirteen States of the USA.

And, please name the most recent five US States, to have become fully-fledged States of the US's fifty of same -- advancing from the status of "Territory", to that of State (this process took place for all five, during the course of the 20th century).

I know the 13 colonies are predominantly East Coast, given they were formed by the English, I believe. So let's go for:

Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North & South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts & Rhode Island. I can't think of the two others.

Re the most recent states: Hawaii, Alaska, New Mexico, I think.

For the most recent, I think Louisiana was one of the later ones, along with Hawaii and Alaska. I'll add New Mexico and California.

For the 13, can I add Vermont and Maine to @perryman's list?

Four out of five -- Nevada is wrong, though; a different state was "the other of the most recent".

These three, all correct. @Gloster has also got Arizona, above. The final one is still to name.

Louisiana and California became States way back -- 1812 and 1850 respectively. As above -- we still lack just one of of the five.

Alas -- neither right, I'm afraid. They were both in the War of Independence, but they were "weird". In colonial times, Vermont was a sort of "debatable land", wrangled over by the colonies on either side. It declared independence "on its own hook" in 1777; was a country to itself, until joining the US in 1791. What is now Maine, was a -- detached -- part of Massachusetts until 1820, when it became a State in its own right.


So we still need two of the original thirteen; and the last remaining one of the "most recent" -- 20th century -- five.
