The Mikoyan Mig 29 (Fulcrum), the NATO reporting name was appreciated by the Russian Airmen as it seemed to them to represent the pivitol role it played in their Air Force.
21 examples were purchased from Moldova, by the United States.

Correct, although the NATO airforce I was thinking of was the Luftwaffe. East German examples were absorbed after unification into the West German airforce and served for quite a while.

Did you cheat and use the OEIS?

However, you are correct and it's your floor.

I don't know what OEIS is but if adding two numbers together and multiplying the sum by two is cheating then yes, I cheated. As a punishment I will forgo the opportunity to pose a question and declare open floor.

Ok then. I'll have a go.
What is OEIS?

Sorry I'd better withdraw that, I wouldn't know if the answer was right. Open floor.

Sorry about suspecting you of cheating. The speed at which you gave an answer led me to believe you had copied and pasted the sequence into the OEIS and gleaned the answer from there. Therefore, it's your floor. I insist.

When the film version of Oliver! Was being planned a famous British singer and friend of Lionel Bart was going to be cast as Nancy.

Under pressure from the studio- Colombia she was dropped.

Who was the singer and why was she dropped?

Hmmm. Although she's no singer it might have been Barbara Windsor on the grounds that no-one in America had heard of her. Then again - I always thought surprisingly - Lionel was mates with Shirley Bassey (who really was a singer). Perhaps the studio thought that being a singer precluded her from acting (although it's never stopped dozens of others).
Nope, I'll stick with Miss Windsor on the grounds that the studios thought that she wasn't "big" enough for the part.
I expect that it'll turn out to be Julie Andrews!

Based on the answer Phil gave, was it Shirley Bassey and the studios dropped her because it was the olden days and everyone was a racist then?

Burley Chassis is correct- but thats not the reason- though her skin colour is relevant.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Ok off to work shortly so here are the clues-

It's our Shirl from Tiger Bay

The year of the films release is relevant

What was happening in the USA at that time matters

Her skin colour was important

The character is relevant

Will be back later tonight.

Well, I have to slightly disagree with this, based on this extract from Wikipedia:

Casting

The film used mostly young unknowns, among them Mark Lester (Oliver), Shani Wallis (Nancy) and Jack Wild as The Artful Dodger, but also featured Hugh Griffith, an Oscar winner for Ben-Hur, in a cameo role as the Magistrate. Harry Secombe, who played Mr. Bumble, was well known in Britain but not in the United States, and Oliver Reed, who played Bill Sikes, had just begun to make a big name for himself. Ron Moody, who was also well known in Britain but not the US, recreated his London stage performance, after Peter Sellers, Dick Van Dyke and Peter O'Toole reportedly turned down the role. Elizabeth Taylor turned down the role of Nancy as well. Julie Andrews was also considered. Director Reed also had Shirley Bassey in mind, but his choice was rejected by Hollywood studio bosses who felt that the public was not ready for a Black Nancy. Classical actor Joseph O'Conor, not well known in the U.S., played Mr. Brownlow.

It would seem that we're both right ..... ?

The source I have- & they are a normally very well researched organisation, suggests that Julie was not really in the running. Shirley got to what I think is called final casting.

The reason is not because the US studio didn't think a black woman could portray the part- it was 1968 not 1958!- Shirley had been on the Ed Sullivan show as early as 1960 when very few black people were ever on US tv and following numerous appearances on big network tv shows she eventually had her own tv special on network US tv in 1967. Our Shirley was by 1968 a big turn in the old USA & would have made good box office

As said before 1968 is important as is the character.

Anyway will be offline for a bit.

I'll allow one more guess as to why the studio dropped her before I give the answer. If no one gets it then Gutfright can have the floor.

However, Columbia’s brass was less thrilled at Reed’s insistence on having Welsh singer Shirley Bassey play Nancy. The studio was jittery that the inclusion of the black Bassey in the all-white cast would create problems with audiences uncomfortable with interracial romance, especially since her character is in love with a man who kills her.

I still think it's a black thing.

1968 is the year Martin Luthor King died

Ok Comutor is so close I think he can have it.

Following the MLK assassination there was a very real fear in Washington (& particularly in the Southern states) that there would be an all out armed civil/race war between blacks and whites. There were plenty of far-left organisations such as The Nation of Islam , Black Panthers etc who already had ties to other terrorism groups, Communist sympathisers & anyone keen to destabilise a very broken and 'on a knife edge' USA of 1968.

In the midst of all this political turmoil our lass from Tiger Bay found herself at the mercy of the very politicised Hollywood studio system of that time (The anti-communist show trials still in recent memory)

Columbia & with some political pressure felt in that climate it would be inappropriate and inflammatory to have a film in which a black woman was murdered by her white lover. Particularly as Shirley would have been by far the best known actor/singer in the film to a US audience.

But hey 'That's Showbiz'

That's very kind, but I don't really deserve the floor. I didn't even know that Lionel Bart and Shirley Bassey were friends, my answer was based on what other contributors had said and a bit of guesswork.

Open floor...

Time for a military one.

Of the entire Imperial Japanese Navy (at one point smaller than only the US Navy & Royal Navy) by the end of WWII only one useful fighting ship remained afloat and was handed to the allies.

Which ship was it and what eventually happened to it?

Correct. After the July 1945 bombing of Kure Nagato was all that remained of the IJN. Infact destruction of the IJN was so comprehensive that Janes Fighting Ships of 1946/47 has no reference at all to a Japanese Navy.

Your command
