Yes, they were just random guide lyrics so they could get a feel for the song. He tried to write some real lyrics but failed and the guide lyrics were used instead and thus the song was named the riddle despite the lyrics being total nonsense.

You've put me in a bit of a quandary as I suppose that is a connection but not the particular one I wanted so I'll have to say "sorry try again", my rather weak excuse is that a pendulum doesn't necessarily use a ball.

I'm guessing therefore, that the connection is the annual Pentecost event held at the Pantheon when thousands of rose petals are dropped through the open central roof representing the descent of the Holy Spirit.

Sorry, that's a very good answer but not the one I wanted (I didn't even know about the Pentecost event held at the Pantheon), however you are right that American Beauty is a rose so we have:
