Gibraltar was ceded to the British in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht, to secure Britain's withdrawal from the Spanish War of Succession.

The previous poster was correct with Lord Byron as having the first (Royal society of arts) blue plaque. The one you referring to is I think Thomas Babington Macaulay who's Holly Lodge home got the first LCC blue plaque when they took over the responsibility from the RSA.

Indeed, it was Thomas Babington Macauley whom I had in mind. Notice that my conundrum only made reference to "the first blue plaque". I thought this would be a good conundrum to set, as Holly Lodge had to be the name of the residence.

John Alexander Brodie invented the nets (1889) and designed/suggested the Liverpool Ring Road (1898).

Spot on. He also designed the Queensway tunnel which for, I think, 24 years was the longest underwater tunnel in the world and is still the biggest municipal building project in the UK. He helped choose and design the sight for New Delhi. He has a blue plaque on his old house on Ullet Road in Liverpool. Busy man, ha ha. The dual carraigeway where I catch my bus to work is called Brodie Avenue in his honour.

Which was the unopened 4-platform railway station on the Great Eastern Main Line, first proposed in 1900 by the Great Eastern Railway and platforms constructed but left in limbo, saw the idea for opening again being considered after the 1923 grouping by the London and North Eastern Railway but then left "on the back burner" until the matter was discussed again in 1935 without a decision being made and finally the plans were shelved after World War 2.
