The final two verses in the song state......

I'm Burlington Bertie from Bow.

This version written in 1915 was written by William Hargreaves and sung by his wife Ella Shields, who performed the song whilst dressed in the male attire that would be associated with and worn by "a broken down swell".

A reminder of the historical connection between Switzerland and the original Geneva Convention of 1864 ? It may also be something to do with the First Crusade in the early Middle Ages.

The Swiss flag is based on the coat of arms of the canton of Schwyz, one of the original members of the Swiss Confederation. In fact the name of the country in Swiss German is the same as that of the canton. But I can't answer the question why this particular symbol was chosen.

While waiting for the answer I'll set the next question - a philatelic one:

Bergedorf is now a suburb of Hamburg but for a brief period before being subsumed into the North German Confederation it issued its own postage stamps. What is the significance of the image on the postage stamp?
