It's slightly annoying that I am sure I used to know the guy's name after it came up in pub quizzes a few times. Jim [something] is possible but no more than that.

Of course I categorically refuse to search for more information. If I get any correct answers in this thread they will be out of my head unless I come across something relevant serendipitously.

The cricketing Villa goalie was Jim Cumbes.

There have been plenty of dual football/cricket internationals. I'll go for Willie Watson as one who may have won things in both sports.

The person I am looking for is a goalkeeper called Jim, but not Jim Cumbes, whose County Championship medal was in 1974, but his League Cup medal in 1975.
Willie Watson was a double international, but yet again, as far as I can see, won no trophies.

Another clue, Cumbes won his County Championship medal playing for the same county as the person I'm looking for.

As a motorsport nut, I can reassure EM2 that Jackie Stewart's last professional clay pigeon event was the British qualifying event for the 1960 Rome Olympics, and his first Formula 1 World Championship wasn't until 1969.

Thanks. That 1960 one was the last I could find reference to, but not knowing the ins and outs of clay pigeon shooting, I couldn't be sure!

That's the one!
Standen won the County Championship with Worcs (leading their bowling averages for that season) and the FA Cup with West Ham United in 1964.
He almost bettered it the next year, when he won the European Cup-Winners Cup with West Ham, but football severely limited his availability for cricket, and although Worcs won a second consecutive County Championship, he played only one match thus not qualifying him for a medal.

Q Which football team hold the record for the quickest time elapsed between 2 goals? Who did they play and how many minutes and seconds had passed between the 2 goals?

Well, I'm guessing it's less than 20 seconds as that's how long it was between our (Oxford's) fourth and fifth goals in stoppage time in a 5-5 draw at home to Pompey in the 1990s. (Magilton penalty & Chrissy Allen header) and I don't think we hold that particular record.

Your right to think it is less than 20 Seconds and Oxford don't hold that record, but the club with the record is within 50 miles of Oxford

Correct

Jamie Bates scored from a free kick, as soon as the ball hit the net the referee blew up for half time, Wycombe kicked off in 2nd half, 9 seconds in (without a Peterborough player touching the ball) Jermaine McSporran scored so it was 9 seconds, with half time in the middle, but 9 seconds playing time

I would also like to point out I was actually there to witness it happen :p

This is a "half football", " half railways" questions.

Which football ground used by a team now in the premier league was built on land which was originally purchased by a railway company for a planned extension? The railway was partly built but the extension was abandoned and the land subsequently sold to the football club.

The football ground may or may not be in use in now.

With no-one even guessing-
A clue- The ground in question has been closed (the old ground sold) and the Premier League team now play at a new ground.
If no-one gets the answer by 1200 tomorrow (Monday 24th) I shall reveal the answer because I shall be away from PC until Thursday 27th December enjoying Christmas.

Home of Southampton FC until 2001 when they moved to a new ground at St. Marys.

Back in the 1980's and 90's the FA said that U17's could only train for clubs within 90 Minuites of their home, how did Manchester United get around this for one player?

The answer was to fly them into Manchester Airport on a scheduled flight, The player lived in Bishop Stortford about 10 minutes from Stansted Airport, So he was put on a flight every day as a way around the 90 Minuites travel time, As no one got it I will declare an Open Floor
