Everyone knows that the term "Berliner" refers to the German equivalent of a doughnut. But what would a person in Berlin itself call them, and why does this present a problem to other German speakers?

I'm guessing that the locals returned the compliment, referring to sticky ring-shaped confections as "JFKs", pronounced jaffkes. This caused confusion in the rest of Germany, where jaffkes is the nickname given to Jaffa Cakes...

No, that was it. The massive crack occurred during the casting, when a fire broke out and vast quantities of water were needed. This cooled the metal too quickly and introduced weakness, meaning that the world's largest bell has never been rung.
