Realistically it had to be either us or the French, so it was a 50-50 shout. I chose them because if it was the English I would probably have known about it!

A d20 is a twenty-sided die, ability damage would suggest some attribute points lost in a skirmish, not sure about a saving throw.

My neighbour is heavily into it, so I have started to learn a few things about it here-and-there and even played a couple of times. As he could tell you, and apparently you could tell him, a "d20" is a 20-sided die and "ability damage" is nonstandard damage that weakens attributes. Meanwhile, a "saving throw" is a roll of the die that is used in an effort to prevent an attack or similar move from working; for example, if a player rolls a 5 when attempting to use a spell of some kind, a roll of 6 or higher (i.e. a 3-in-4 shot) would under normal circumstances save the potential victim.

Played some wargames at school many years ago, so d20 were familiar from that, the others were a guess!

Just to expand on the answer, a rover is a midfield player, usually of smaller stature, a speccie/specky is a spectacular catch, to roost is take a long kick, a torpedo is a kick where the ball rotates around its long axis, the fifty is an area bounded by an arc 50m from the goal and a behind is a score of one point where the ball goes between the tall and short posts (between the tall posts is a goal, worth six points)
