Afraid not; the above lady, and the answer-person, were (as they would have been) approximate -- not super-close -- contemporaries; but in most other ways, could hardly have been more different from each other.

Hint: the subject bod of my question favoured most greatly (though not exclusively) for undertaking travels, subject of their books: the bicycle. (Was a strong "un-fan" of the private car.)

Thanks ! I'm an incurable pessimist...

The author John Buchan is probably best known for his classic thriller The Thirty-Nine Steps. This is actually the first in a series of five novels by Buchan, featuring his hero Richard Hannay: covering the period from the immediate prelude to World War 1; the war; and, at considerable length (a couple of decades) its aftermath. Please give the titles of the four after "Steps", in correct chronological order: of publication dates, and "in history" -- they're the same.

Greenmantle is the second in the series -- IMO a splendid yarn -- they're in Turkey in 1915 (not Gallipoli; they're further east, where it's Turks versus Russians). Three now to go !

Mr Standfast and The Island of Sheep come third and fifth. I must admit I had to look in the bookcase for the third one out of pure annoyance at not remembering it, so I will hold fire on that.
