I'm assuming that it is some clean-living American. Can I guess John Denver or Billy Joel?

I knew I had no idea, so I googled out of curiosity and I am amazed! o_O
It's good to be amazed occasionally.

Neither of those.
American? Mainly
Clean living? I'm in no position to judge.

It was a big hit in the UK probably helped by the band's television appearances.

That's right, the title was bowdlerised for release in he UK. Your turn...
(My brother was right, there; including the titular messing-about. He admitted to not being quite sure whether the Monkees had performed the song; or just composed / written it.)

There are a number of "automatic" car-wash facilities near to where I live, so I wonder if the ones still exist that the public can start by the insertion of "company tokens".
Correct answer!
@Xenophon PCDGS your turn.

My dad used to run most of the Burmah petrol stations in the north-west in very early 70's - I used to spend my Sundays with my dad driving around the north west, all very interesting. He bought (or leased) a couple of brand spanking new car washes and I was very interested in them and how they worked as a kid. As a foot note, he left the game when profit margins became too small with increased competition from supermarkets and the like.
Here is a Esquire Kleindienst car wash, the same my dad had.
