In my much younger days, I was interested in the ancient peoples of the African continent and remembered there were two such peoples with similar names, the Mahos and the Mahas. One was the early peoples of the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa who were settled by the Phoenicians and the other were the stone-age Nubian tribes who inhabited the land area of southern Egypt and northern Sudan.

Just to note I am being rather specific with the location.
There is a generic name used for the general area, that should only strictly apply to one specific place. Mahos is a specific name applied to one place.

I think it's one which hosts a Formula 1 race because I recall mention in the commentary of a race of the track being below sea level... but I can't remember which track it was at the moment...

Isn't the Caspian Sea below sea level? If so, Baku is worth guessing.
