Many thanks to everyone who answered about the consist order of the 99's on 0Z38 and extra thanks to @D1537 for confirming the position in Peterborough yard this morning.

I can 100% confirm that 4Z38 Peterborough - Doncaster Decoy this morning is 99007+10 IIA hoppers. With that, I'm going to confidently predict that the runs between Peterborough and Doncaster this week will involve the 99's in the MBDL TOPS pool (99007-99009) on test runs.

The wagons that were presumably for 4Z38 were sitting by the GBRf depot this morning with 99003 on the south end. I presume 007 was on its way to attach to the other end, but I didn't see it.

There are 4 currently at Peterborough which i think are 2, 3, 8 and 9 and number 7 was at Doncaster. Is anyone able to confirm. MTIA

As far as I know this is correct. 99002, 99003, 99008 and 99009 all at Peterborough with 99007 on fault free running between Peterborough and Doncaster with 10 IIA hoppers.

All eyes on 99006 now to see what that works next from Tuebrook! And yes, first 99 to visit Tuebrook and therefore some new track for 99's was covered by it working 0R01. My next task is to work out what.

Apologies if this has been covered, I've tried to follow this thread but haven't read all 56 pages.

Is it known what the actual intended use for the 30 Class 99s is? I keep seeing rumours of sleepers etc but nothing actually confirmed.
In general, freight services, allowing parts under wires to run on electric.
The specific ones aren't known yet.
The North Blyth - Fort William Alcans was another flow/path which fits the latter criteria that appeared on the list of ECML paths/flows that GBRF (which appeared in a OOR report dating from last March iirc) were looking to hand over to 99 haulage.

Whether or not it actually happens of course remains to be seen at this early stage, especially when no 99 has gone near the WHL, but looking at it purely in terms of fuel capacity/operating range/power output on diesel mode, Craigendoran - Fort William is well within the 99's limits. The one major hurdle I can see needing to be overcome, barring the power supply on the North Clyde Electrics, is the ability to switch power modes on the fly at Cowlairs, Knightswood North & Craigendoran Junctions.

Deep in this thread there was a list of various stone trains, Ribblehead, Grassington and others, I would hedge my own bet on the stone train that goes up to Ashton in Makerfield from Tuebrook every few days. I cannot see them putting them on the Drax trains but who knows, if it goes wrong as it has with a regular 66 (a lot) recently it absolutely ruins the Calder Valley and most of the North Manchester locals. Will not be good press!

I've heard that it's to work the Liverpool to Tuebrook section of the Drax biomass trains
as a 'stress test' to see how the class performs on that notoriously difficult section,
similar to the class 93 which piloted the DB train from Seaforth earlier this year.

There's also talk of using one as a banker on Miles Platting bank at some point to see
if the loaded trains to Drax can be rerouted via Chat Moss to avoid the current huge
detour via Altrincham. This actually makes sense as Miles Platting is electrified,
so a class 99 would be able to use all it's available power.

I'm (just!) old enough to remember class 25s sat at Manchester Victoria for the same
purpose, although I never saw one used in anger...

Only of any use if going via Huddersfield, the wires extend barely half a mile from Victoria towards Rochdale on the fast lines [which are slower than the slow lines].
Unless they can launch and then quickly take the pantograph down at a bit of speed.

Surely this can be made possible, especially at designated locations? I could've sworn the Class 88s are able to do this when changing to/from their small diesel engines, unless there are restrictions on when/how this is done.

Theres a blockade at the end of June which will see the wires finished on the fast lines and over the top of the bank towards Rochdale to a new turnback siding next to the Miles Platting triangle, that'll help!

According to RTT, 99006 has indeed gone on trials between Liverpool docks and Tuebrook sidings assisting the biomass trains, as it's currently showing as working 6E24 Liverpool - Drax as far as Tuebrook. I'm guessing that means it also worked 0F24. Can anyone please kindly confirm that 99006 has indeed worked 0F24/6E24 today?

Link to 6E24: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:H49745/2026-05-27/detailed

Also, 99008 got heavily delayed on 4Z39 Doncaster Decoy - Peterborough today just north of Grantham. Can anyone please confirm this was because of a bridge strike and not due to any problem with the loco or train itself?

I note that, according to the RTT link, the train went from 7 minutes late departing the terminal to 15 minutes late at Tuebrook. Could this potentially be a bad sign?

Delayed due to bridge strike,

99008 had minor issues with the GSM-R radio system when it arrived back at Peterborough yard but not related to the delays on 4Z39. 99008 will be taken off the train and tonight’s 0Z60 will now be running as 4Z60 with 99009 and the sand wagons that were on 4Z39 earlier today

Hope this helps

There is a post today on the Railways in and Around Merseyside FB group which confrims

"The most unexpected image of today! I went to record No 66185 on 4S38 Seaforth to Mossend 'intermodal' at Edge Lane Junction (Bootle Branch line) and right time, right place, GBRf No 99006 passes by on 0F24 L/E to the Docks. Yes, I did record 99006 on the return hauling 6E24 biomass to Tuebrook Sdgs."

There is a report on Cheshire Rail by John Skipsey that 99006 worked 6E27 by itself from the Biomass Terminal to Tuebrook. This woul imply that after bringing 6E24 up from the docks it went back down again. I have not found on RTT any reports of light engine movements of this or 66749 which had worked the train down.

It's very confusing what 99006 has done so far since arriving at Tuebrook. Thanks to posts above and photos elsewhere, the only workings I've been able to confirm so far are:

Wednesday 27th May 2026: 0F24 Tuebrook - Liverpool Biomass Terminal and 6E24 Liverpool Biomass Terminal - Tuebrook with 66302 on the rear.

Thursday 28th May 2026: 6E27 Liverpool Biomass Terminal - Tuebrook either alone or with another loco on the rear.

If anyone can fill in the gaps either with confirmed sightings or TOPS history I (and I'm guessing others) would be very grateful please.

Just as urgently, can anyone please find out what happened to 99009 after working 4Z39 to March Yard and where it currently is? 0Z03 March - Peterborough is showing as cancelled due to a problem with traction equipment.

It’s sitting in March Down Yard after going via Manea crossover to get there, ran into problems at March Station on 0Z03 got itself off the mainline. - should be collected tomorrow by a classmate (believe 008)

Thank you @66103 for both of your posts, they were extremely helpful. :D

I think I've got everything involving 99008 and 99009 up to date now. The only thing I'm uncertain of is that RTT claims 0Z95 Peterborough - March yesterday morning was 99008+66733. I haven't seen anything to confirm that the 66 was on 0Z95 with 99008. Do you, or anyone else, know for certain if 0Z95 Peterborough - March was 99008 on its own or if it did indeed have the 66 with it?

Tonight there is a 6Z24 1929 Tuebrook Sidings to Drax running via Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge. According to RTT it has a trailing load of 800 tonnes, much less than the normal trainload.
As 99006 is still at Tuebrook could this be a test up Miles Platting?
