will the government seriously commit to enforcing price caps? Not as long as they are skimming VAT from your bills and taking (what I'd hope is) a whopping chunk of corporation tax.

That would go against the free market, something I can't see the Tories agreeing to.

The standard rate of VAT for items subject to it, went up from 17.5% to 20%.

The rate of VAT on energy bills was only 5% and I have NOT heard that there will be any increase.

If you find that your energy supplier is charging more than the CORRECT rate of VAT, I would contact them at once and DEMAND an explanation.

Letters have started to be delivered to people informing them how much thier bills will go up. intresting t osee the response.

We should all simply refuse to pay. We need a campaign of amss civil disobiennce to make these companies understand that they cant rip us off. but we wont becuase we are British. We will tut and complain and grumble then pay up. The French would be out in the streets rioting and burning sheep!

How long until those on low or limited income have to turn off the lights becuase they cant afford to run them? Or freeze becuase they cant afford the gas?

Remember the fuel protests in 2000? They were about to get the army in to guarantee the delivery of fuel. Unfortunately the way things work in this country is that if you don't like a government policy then you vote them out at the election, protests have little effect.

That is true, this thread really isn't the place for why the referendum failed but the rejection does mean that those in safe seats still don't get adequate representation

As for gas bills nothing will happen, it's in the government's best interests to keep the costs high as VAT is added last

But we had a vote, and well over 50% of with public (as with AV parlance) said No to AV. Thus, the decision to keep FPTP is fully democratic.

I do NOT think that I have to make ANY further clarifications upon what I say upon this matter, for the reasons stated below:-

What has the AV system to do with Gas Bills....Nothing.

Why did that point enter this thread......No reason whatsoever.

Do either Labour or Conservatives run power companies......No.

"Remember the fuel protests in 2000"..... How does "Gas Bills" have any relevence to that statement.......None whatsoever, unless the road haulage industry who were the campaigners at that time had their vehicles powered by gas.

I even had to clarify the fact that the VAT rate on gas and electricity bills in still only 5%.

I think you will find that from the very first page the thread was already heading in the direction of politics, despite my attempts to keep it on track.
It's only natural that in a discussion involving the obscure prices surronding the cost of living, people will start to talk about the Government and what they are doing to help out those who will struggle under the strain of heavy bills. Though I do agree about AV, it doesn't belong here.
