With the stock shortage at GA, what is the possibility of GA hiring in 47's to top and tail a few carriages again?

Low. As far as I am aware, other than the 156 at Wolverton which has been covered for, all of the sprinter fleet is in action.

Why is there a stock shortage?

There are some 317s available to take on at short notice if the finances are agreed.

Sounds like a claimed DMU shortage, from what transportphoto has said. Are the 317/7s readily available - for anyone?

They are all in cold store at Eastleigh, aside from 317722 which is undergoing an experimental rebuild at Ilford. The 8 at Eastleigh could be ready to go at reasonably short notice, but as it stands there is no demand for EMUs until all the new electrification is done.

No chance, as they have an agreement with EMT that means some Wherry Lines services are worked by 158s. If reliablility worsens, I think they will hire an ATW 150 or EMT 158 before they revert back to LHCS. It's a shame, but it will probably not happen again.

Not quite.

LM have demand for a similar number of EMUs but they've been allowed to place an order for brand new 350s.

Northern don't really have enough 323s to cover the North West electric routes at present but they won't exactly want to take on 3 x 317s.

There's also demand for extra carriages in the Southern and SWT franchises but the 317s won't provide enough and with them being AC only it would require a complicated cascade to make effective use of them.

Yeah, sorry, I meant AC EMUs :P. Northern won't take any because a micro-fleet is a bad idea and they accelerate alot slower than a 323 so won't be able to keep to the timings. London Midland had 6 321s sitting out of use all day apart from peak hours until this timetable change, which sees them in use all day again, which is good use of the stock they have.

They could hire the 306 from EARM last time I was chatting to the people there they said all it needed was a service and a bit of wire from the panto to the transformer there must be lots of bits of wire in the scrap yards that has been stolen from the GEML
ooh yes it needs OTMR .TPWS and the new radio stuff, they could run it on the Walton branch.that would be great

Yes, I noted a 153 vice 156 on 2S08 (0715 ex NRW) this morning.

This topic was prompted by someone telling me about their journey from lowestoft to London on thursday, the crossing at halesworth failed and they had to wait for the crossing to time out and re try, so they missed the connection at ipswich, got the stopper which then got stopped at halifax jn to allow a freight train out, 40 mins late at liverpool street. Then the 14:00 train to Norwich was cancelled so everyone piled on the 14:30 with no catering, got to ipswich and waited for the train to lowestoft, which was a 153, so 150 people pile on...

Emt 158 really wouldn't both EMT and GA prefer it to be a 156 however EMT are also short of units due to unusually high number of breakdowns and so wouldn't have anything to hire to them. However if anyone wants an extra unit 153308 wouldn't be missed. However some of the masking tape keeping he roof panels to the roof could do with replacing

Indeed, there has been some shortfall with the EMT 158 fleet of late, resulting in 156s turning up on Liverpool - Norwich diagrams with 2x 153 substitutions on other services (and others downgraded to a single 153). I believe this is settling down again, but it doesn't mean there is slack in the fleet to allow a loan of stock to GA. I believe only SWT have sufficient slack in their DMU fleet to really be able to loan stock out.

Having fun with that one then? Unfortunately, it's one of the ex Wessex / inFamous 4 that puts the proverbial 'Dog' in 'Dogbox'. I can't remember which unit it was, but one of them had a almost constant report of excessive whistling noise in one of the cab's. Mind you, Wessex's repairs were hardly anything special either (even worse if it took a trip to one dreaded depot!).

Im in a way, surprised though that SWT hasn't sent a spare unit across again.

It's just a load of ceiling panels are dangling and that its letting quite a lot of cold air in through the walls, most of the other ceiling panels are held up by masking tape.

Send the 153s to Norwich or preferably to a scrapyard

They were even worse from a passengers perspective when they retained the ex-158 seats that Wessex had fitted to them. Even someone quite tall would struggle to see out of the windows - thankfully, that is no longer a problem. I've not come accross 153308 since its refurbishment, but find it hard to believe it's in such bad condition - most of the other Dogboxes are ok from a passengers perspective, though their reliability can leave much to be desired.
