I think we're talking the farthest east and west of our own homes, or some other reference point. I'm using Hitchin station.

In that vein, here is my 'by train all the way from home' list:

North: still Goteborg
East: Irmak, Turkey - to see Turkish 8Fs on the way to Zonguldak
South: Lisboa Santa Apolonia, or Cascais*
West: Sintra or Cascais*

* not sure which wins without looking at a detailed map

May be changing goal posts as you fellas call it, but spent 5 nights on the Trans Siberian.

Got off at Irkutsk, having bored in Moscow, thats 2609 miles as the proverbial ruski crow flies. Also for you numbers geeks thats 104° 19’ E. Thats a long way East.

Cost? £50. Beat that ScotRail with you Caledonian Sleeper.

And while I am at it.. been on the Ferrocarril Santa Ana in Peru, terminus at Machu Picchu is at 2350m above sea level (Second heightest in the world?).

3º 07 south and 72º 35 west. Thats a lil way west, and a fair way south..
