Furthest points reached by train

Looking at another thread I was diverted by Burns20’s footer with ‘furthest’ stations on the compass used by train.

I presume this may have come from a thread I didn't follow, but nevertheless,

Here they are:

Furthest north: Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden
Furthest East: Changchun, China
Furthest South: Encarnacion, Paraguay
Furthest West: San Francisco

Just for comparison, my ‘furthest’ points using any form of transport are no different apart from north, which is Geiranger, Norway which I reached by car in 2008 (also the furthest north I have camped in a tent)

Just to do a bit of name dropping, my furthest west on a steam train (and in South America) was Guayaquil, Ecuador

And for another branch of amusement, my highest point reached by ‘normal’ train is just above Alausi, Ecuador (2350m) – as I’ve not done the Peru Central Railway, my highest overall is therefore Jungfraujoch (3454m)

I have reached Penzance, Lowestfot, Fort William, Wick and Thurso.

I have also travelled by train from Christchurch to Greymouth in New Zealand, and from Chicago - Seattle - San Luis Obispo - Bakersfield - Los Angeles - Chicago in the US.

In Europe I have travelled on trains in Ireland, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain.

Still a lot left to do!

As with all forum posts there has now been some goalpost changing by other members!

In that vein, here is my 'by train all the way from home' list:

North: still Goteborg
East: Irmak, Turkey - to see Turkish 8Fs on the way to Zonguldak
South: Lisboa Santa Apolonia, or Cascais*
West: Sintra or Cascais*

* not sure which wins without looking at a detailed map

It'll be Cascais as its the most westerly point you can get to by train in Europe.

can I add that the furthest South West railway (GB) was the now closed quarry system at Newlyn Cornwall, Ruston diesel T W Lewis has passed into preservation on the Leighton Buzzard line, was the only steam locomotive Penlee preserved - spent many years on a plinth at the quarry.

The railway has its own page on Wikipedia stating that Penlee is at Leighton Buzzard, no mention of the preserved diesel
