Different transport mode but I got ripped up for announcing as I pulled into March with a Nat Exp coach,"We are now coming into March, home of the Fenland Mountain Rescue Service". The lady who lived there did not have a sense of humour obviously.

I was making the short hop between the two Bristol Stations a couple of weeks ago and as we were leaving Temple Meads there was an announcement that anyone who has no intention of paying for a ticket should now take up their regular hiding place in the toilet. He also suggested that they may like to try hiding under a table or on the luggage rack.

On a Javelin yesterday afternoon from Stratford to St. Pancras, the Guard began announcing that "We are now arriving at St. Pancras" just as we entered the tunnel at Stratford. I though that was slightly premature, but his connectional information included "platforms 1, 2, 3 4 for East Midlands Trains services to Bedford, Leicester, East Midlands Parkway, Nottingham and Sheffield via Derby. Platforms 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 for Eurostar services to Paris Gare du Nord, Brussel-Zuid (both said in convincing European accents!), platforms A and B for First Capital Connect services to St. Albans, Luton and Bedford, London Bridge, East Croydon, Gatwick Airport and Brighton"

I thought that was the end of it - How wrong I was!

"Next door at London Kings Cross, East Coast, Grand Central and First Hull Trains services via the East Coast Main Line to Peterborough, Doncaster, Yorkshire, Newcastle and Scotland. First Capital Connect services to Welwyn Garden City and Hertford"

..."Just up the road, or one stop on the Northern London Underground line, Virgin Trains services, via the West Coast Main Line, to Milton Keynes, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Carlisle and Glasgow. Also, for services to North Wales, Llandudno Junction and Holyhead for Dún Laoghaire"

... Directions to Paddington, Victoria and Waterloo followed, with a plethora of available destinations from each.

His announcement just finished with the names of himself and the Driver just as we were emerging into daylight over the ECML!

Still, it was better than watching the scenery I suppose! :D

Did his name begin with "R" by any chance? He's a bit well known for his "comprehensive" announcements :)

I believe I once heard a conductor announce, rather sarcastically, that you could change for "Reigate, Betchworth, Dorking West and all stations to Reading" when we were approaching Redhill on a southbound Southern service. Betchworth is not the most important of stations, shall we say, and Dorking West is so infrequently used that it is a well-known joke amongst some local train enthusiasts.

Conductors on trains approaching London Victoria in the school holidays, just after the peak period has ended, frequently announce that customers should "please remember to take all your children with you" - as mentioned earlier in the thread. This is actually very good policy - there are a lot of child-oriented museums in Kensington, which is only a short hop away on the District line, and I have seen kids getting misplaced on journeys like that.

I had some big, cheery red faced chap with a heavy Cornish accent on a FGW PAD-PNZ service. When it came for the (Customer host) to make the announcement that the buffet was open (or words to that effect) she suddenly burst out laughing and promptly put the handset down. One minute later she comes back on and managed to get some words out in between laughter (the laughter you get when you are being tickled). :D

Then the train manager (the Cornish guy) can be heard standing next to her apologising for her disgraceful behavior and explaining that it was her first day.

This went on for a good 3 minutes of hysterical laughter from her, and the whole train.

It wasn't done in a malicious way - he was laughing about it, she was laughing, the train was laughing. (Yes, that's right(!)) I can't see any reason why she would be fired. :)

Oh, and "disgraceful behavior" was said jokingly as we all knew it was him that was causing the laughter.

Why would she get fired?!

Because she had 'disgraceful' behaviour'. Unless there was a bit of playtime going on, which I don't know of course.

Ah I see, I knew it wasn't malicious, I just though she was being unprofessional!.

There's a XC guard I've had (West Indian accent) and he made the journey from Birmingham to Cambridge so good. He apologised for "appalling lack of accommodation" announced Leicester as "liesester, or Leciester as the natives call it", Ely as "Eli" apologised for anyone changing at Cambridge for Essex, asked a lady with a primark bag if she'd bought cr*p or sh*t, and asked someone how they were and when asked himself, replied "I'm crap! At work, rather be at home wit me feet up! Lucky I have you lovely lot" along with detailed and humorous information for every interchange available. I think hs ame is Fred, excellent chap he is.

I had one fairly recently where the guard said something interesting about every stop we made en route from [somewhere; Didcot maybe] to Bristol - the only time I've ever not changed at Bath Spa on an HST I believe. For instance, he referred to Bristol TM as "Brunel's brilliant Bristol Temple Meads".

I was on a SWT service today and the guard announced "This is the SWT service to London Waterloo, I will be walking through the train throughout the journey, I am currently situated in the second carriage of this 5 coach train, thank you for your co-operation." Every time he said that I kept thinking to myself, what co-operation? We haven't done anything apart from sit there.

Not all that funny really is it? I found it amusing at the time. :)

There's a guard on the Sheerness branch who likes to refer to Sittingbourne station as "Sittingbourne International".

I know that one, had him a few times.

On a train to Sheerness in the summer a few years back ...

"Welcome aboard this Southeastern service to the Isle Of Man" :p

And another as approaching Sheerness (wasn't the same journey):

"Ladies and gentleman, we will shortly be arriving at the sunny, sandy, seaside resort of Sheerness on Sea!" :p

Another time, a conductor has played the Thunderbirds theme over the PA as we approached Sittingbourne/Sheerness :P

This is the best one though:

"Ladies and gentleman, we will shortly be arriving at Sheerness on Sea where this train terminates. Please remember to take all your belongings, your bits and bobs and any llamas you may have with you when leaving the train. This is Sheerness where this train terminates." :P

Sounds like the one I mentioned earlier on in the thread, would be the wrong TOC though :?

:o

Calling at Sittingbourne... Castletown, Peel, Ramsey and Douglas?

I hope that's an error - on either the driver's or your behalf - I'd book an appointment to see the local dementia team if you've began to forget what island you live on! ;)

Saying that - Sittingbourne International - either that driver is indeed suffering from some sort of senility or he has a crystal ball and can see what the station will be called in the future if if Boris island gets clearance for takeoff.

Merseyrail have a guard who plays on the idea of loathing his job. His PA announcements include "The next station will be Sandhills. The terminally adventurous among you can change here for services to Ormskirk, where the locals are currently watching traffic lights change"
He was the guard on my delayed train home last night and as we approached Southport said "Will parents please make sure they leave the train with the same amount of kids that they boarded with".

He always brightens my trip home after a hard day @ work.:D:D

I was once on a Virgin service in Mark 3 stock days from Preston to Euston & the Asian Train Manager in a broad Lancashire accent announced all the station stops along with the weather forecast for London & wished everyone had a good un (nice day)!

I remember an announcement once being given by a Northern Guard of where the train was stopping and also reminded people that there was a full ticket inspection to take place and to have all tickets/passes & excuses ready for inspection.

When he came down the train I mentioned about the excuses bit and he said you would be surprised what excuses people have these days and laughed

A bit long winded this but bear with me...

Basically when I did my Cardiff bash a couple of weeks back I was on the 10:37 Voyager from TVP, and was casually reading the Metro paper on the approach to Taunton, and they have a small feature called "Good Deed Feed", and on this day, there was a piece that went thus: "Many thanks to the Train Manager who wishes us the 'wheels of friendship' to travel with us through through 'titillating Tiverton' (yeah right BTW ), 'tantalising Taunton' and 'Brunel's bustling Bristol Temple Meads'"..

And guess who came over the PA system on the Taunton approach, yes that's right, that very train manager!

Hmm. Thinking about it, you *might* be right - but I'm struggling to think where exactly I would have travelled from to hear this. Maybe Leeds I guess, but I'm sure I heard it for the whole journey. Either way, both - or maybe he? sound(s) like a nice enough TM.

Perhaps the TMs on Virgin trains could give out the current weather for the benefit of passengers without windows. :D
