Fantasy I know, but is there enough space inside a 90 to house the engine and equipment for "last mile" capability? Anyone got any internal shots from a 90?

My understanding is there isn't any spare space at all in a class 90.

They were considered for Channel Tunnel use pending delivery of class 92s, but it was impossible to get the TVM430 cabinets in them, and so SNCF locos were modified and used instead

Very much doubt it. The 90 is basically an 87/2, which is a development of the 87 which is a development of the 86. Trying to shoehorn anything extra into a 50 odd year old design is simply not economic even if there were space and weight available. Don't forget they already have greater than 21t axleloading.

Don't know how widely known it is, but the investment authority/invitations to tender/etc all used 87/2 to identify the locomotives; therefore, a class 90 IS an 87/2 !

I would doubt that there is room however how about a generator van that could power the Class 90s motors instead? Otherwise if thats too expensive just build more Class 88s.

I would think the majority if not all Class 66-hauled services between Preston/Birmingham/Crewe to Carlisle or Mossend could be operated by electrics on the WCML?

Ipswich Yard - Crewe would be another big gain

Ipswich Yard all the way to Coatbridge (just a bit further north than Mossend).

However how many Class 86 pairs are diagrammed daily, I guess at least four so thats four of the 13 Class 90s spoken for already, unless the Class 86s are kept after all.

Isn't that basically the idea of the 88? Although am I right in thinking that the 88s can't be built any more due to emissions?

Does anyone know if 86610 & 86614 are likely to work again? I believe those two are the only two Freightliner 86s in 'official' storage currently.

The class 88 is emissions IIIb compliant so I think they could make more if they wanted unlike the 68 which is only IIIa compliant which they can't order any more of without modifications.

Would need a new DPF design to meet stage V from 1/1/21.
