If I remember correctly, to claim the card you needed to either alight or board a train from that station (Emerson Park), rather than travel through it ;)

Sounded like a varied day and brought back memories of myself dashing around London with Chris.

So what are you views on the 315s?

Ah. At least we travelled back on the same connection we would've got from Emerson Park anyway!

I'm not keen on the LO 315s but I've yet to try any other operators ones. Hopefully they'll be better!

Also - I can't believe this!

A day of the old

The 9th of April was the Saturday of the Nene Valley Railway's diesel gala, which had an excellent line up. Dad, Nathan and I were going to go to this together, driving to Wansford, not just because 47192 was going, which was one of dad's last few required brush that are still alive. A plan was formed from the first set of loco allocations that came but, because 37905 had a failure a few days before and couldn't come, the loco allocations had to be redone. In our opinion, they were much better because the very first turn from Wansford to Peterborough and back went over 47712 from whatever it was previously. We weren't planning to get it but would be able to get out and back to Peterborough on it before the first move on our plan anyway. This was very good and I was looking forward to this rather different 'Brunel day' (as the 9th of April was his birthday).

Nathan needed to have a sleepover on the Friday night, as we'd be heading out at stupid o clock in order to get to Wansford for before 08:00. Alarm set for 05:00 and I didn't take too long to come round when it went off. Nathan had slept even worse than me so I let him stay in bed for a bit before he needed to get up so we could head out. We set off for about 05:45 in the hope of getting to Wansford before 08:00 so we could get some brekky before getting onto 712.

'Rubbish tip road' (the A14) still lived up to its nickname and was in a completely sorry state as we headed along there. It was a long drive but dad knew the way and we got there at about 07:30. We noticed a roadside cafe less than a mile away from Wansford station, on the road leading to it. We parked here and headed in, getting a heart disease on a plate for each of us. Dad kindly got them this morning. It was good food and it was good pretty swiftly and we were getting back into the car to get to the station. There was loads of people there already so we ended up parking on the grass next to the road, along with loads of other people. Dad had an argument with his thermal mug once we got out (as it always seems to let everything out) but, after that was over with, we walked to the station and got tickets before wandering onto the platform and taking numbers and photos.

Dad was the one to comment that the array of locos could well be our model railway back home (basically a mix of everything) which made me smile. After getting some phots we boarded winner 47712 (certainly not a winner for dad) and got a compartment in it. I don't like the Nene Valley compartments as much as a lot of other persevered lines because they have tables in them. Tables just don't work in compartments! We had some brilliant thrash from Lady Di' after clearing the large corner just after the station and, after hanging to watch her accelerate, we went and sat down. It was a comfortable ride and the brush was just about audible from where we were at the very back of the train. There was a ticket check on this service and, as tickets at the booking office, you're handed a debit card receipt, another receipt and three little pieces of cardboard that look just like tickets from any other pres line, which any sane person would think is your tickets, right? Wrong! Apparently only the second receipt given to you is valid as a ticket! You weren't told this at the booking office or anything so it was lucky that I still had it in my pocket, even if it was screwed up. At least I still had it!

We didn't get off at Peterborough and stayed in our compartment while 712 ran round the train and came onto the other end, putting her very close to us. Brush thrash! It was excellent, excellent thrash as we were pulled back towards Wansford and, after some early morning brush thrash, we had to leave her. It was across to the other platform where one of the very few 60s that dad's had for haulage was sat on the 'continental' rake of stock. I've never had a donut for haulage so 60066 was obviously a winner for me. The continental stock is very weird and certainly isn't what you'd expect to have in the UK (unless you knew that the NVR has it, of course). You couldn't hear the donut at all as it was on a very light set compared to what they usually haul. We were only on this one for 3.75 miles anyway, out to Ferry Meadows. Next up, a pair of peds!

Double winners 31271 and 31452 were in next and took us back to Wansford. This was 41001's rake of 3 MK3s and it felt weird riding on mk3s on a preserved line. Quite funky though with a couple of peds thrashing away up front! After leaving them, we traipsed over the footbridge and got ready for our next move, on the same stock that 47712 had been on this morning. This was winner for all of us 47192 and, after getting a few photos of it arriving, we leapt aboard.

Dad had scored his first required brush for 4 years when 192 began moving out. It wasn't sounding as sweet as 712 but was still a hellfire sulzer and gave a great show for everyone on the train. We had, once again, got a compartment and we were on this brush all the way to the last stop on the NVR, Peterborough. While 192 ran round at Peterborough, dad and I stayed in the compo while Nat watched 192 pass from the vestibule window. I was looking out over the platform when someone caught my eye and I immediately pointed him out to dad. It was one of dad's old bashing friends! I called him over and he happily joined us for the thrash back to Wansford.

Once back there, all four of us headed over for the continental stock with another pair of winners for me on, 56008 and 56098. We managed to get good enough seats on this one for the ride back out to Peterborough where the pair ran round, with me getting a few photos from the window in the front of the coach as they did.

They then coupled up and headed back to Wansford, with us less than two metres from the loco. The plan from Wansford was to take the HST (41001) all the way to Wansford for the loco on the back, 50008, back. This is where the plan began to fall away though. We got off the grids and the moment after seeing the tram was already full and standing into the aisles, we decided to flag it. Dad's friend went for it but he was certainly only taking it to Ferry Meadows apparently. With time on our hands now, we decided to head to Yarwell Junction. One of the 'teddy bears' would be taking us and it turns out that it was winner D9520 that did the honors. Hearing it thrash away at the head of the stock, especially through the tunnel en route, was just amazing!

56006 had gone to the rear of the train at Wansford so it hauled us back, without the company from 098 this time. Dad had a differ of opinion from Nat and I now. We wanted to take the grid out to Ferry Meadows for 50008 back in but dad didn't want to risk 50008 being heaving and instead wanted to head back to Yarwell on the teddy bear. We decided to split up for a few minutes then as the service that dad would be from out of Yarwell would be the one that 'Thunderer' would connect onto. We bade farewell to dad as he headed across to the other platform. 006 continued to thunder away and dropped us off at Ferry Meadows with a short wait until winner 50008 arrived. The mk3s were not full and standing and both Nat and I managed to get a seat in the front coach. If I thought being stood in the vestibule of a mk3 on a preserved line with a pair of peds roaring away up front, imagine how I felt being sat down with a log up front! It was certainly weird but a nice experience for the 3.75 miles we had until Wansford.

When we got to Wansford again, it was over to the other platform where the service dad had been on from Yarwell was waiting. 47712 was taking us back to Peterborough! Dad's friend had joined him on the teddy bear and was heading to Peterborough and back on Lady Di' now. I was sent to get lunch from the buffet and came back with a couple of sarnies, a couple of choccy bars, a couple of packets of crispies and a drink for me (dad had had a beer on the teddy bear). We then just chatted away all the way back to Wansford via Peterborough. The GBRF GM thing would be on the next departure from Wansford and only dad's friend went to go for it - we avoided it like the plague. Instead it was winner D9529 that got our attention for the journey back to Yarwell junction. 31452 hauled us back up to Wansford where we said bye to that (knowing that if we took it to Ferry Meadows then it'd be 66768 back and that if we took it to Peterborough then we'd miss 47192 on our final move). We then waited for the teddy bear to change trains and D9529 hauled us back to Wansford, where our penultimate move was waiting to take us to Peterborough. Dad's friend had joined us for the teddy bear and would be staying with us all the way back to Peterborough with 47192, which was now on the continental stock. It was a great last move and we all bade dad's friend goodbye after getting to Peterborough and good luck at getting a winner back to the cross. Meanwhile for us, 192 took us back along to Wansford on the very last train of the day and ended an absolutely terrific day out.

After getting back to Wansford and leaving the rail network, we took a few more photos, including a few from the cab of a steamie.

We decided to get dinner at a nearby service station and found that they had a noodle place so dinner comprised of noodles for all of us and, do I have to say what I had to drink? I'll give you a clue. There was a Costa at the service station! Nat had the same as me to drink and dad went for a latte. We had them in the car before hitting the road again (not literally!) and heading home, getting back just after 22:00.

What a great day!

The only other operator of 315s is TfL Rail from Liverpool Street to Shenfield, and they are pretty much the same inside as the LO ones, apart from more blue rather than orange.

Give it a couple years and they will probably be no more, with 345s out towards Shenfield working Thin Lizzy services and 710s towards Hackney on the Orange side (which gives me something new to aim for within London ;))

An excellent day out at the Nene Valley.
I love the shots through the portholes, something a bit different and arty.
That truckers café at Wansford is dud and as you say they do very good food - the full English breakfast is magnificent :)

By the way, I think you meant 56006 ,not 56008, in the pair - that would have been a huge draw!

I might try to get a TFL 315 the next time I'm in London (that's if Nathan isn't with me or doesn't demand skodas or I'm not drawn to the dusty bins). Good times ahead then for London with the 700s and 707s as well!

Thanks - I like taking 'different' photos, as does dad. I just thought while in the cab that they could work.

I did indeed mean 006 - thanks for pointing it out. I'll edit the post now.

Cheers!

Scoring shacks that Fishquinn still needed (Bearley and Claverdon) that day felt good-especially given the ticket I had

Wow that was a spree of long trip reports there young sir! I wasn't expecting quite so much to read, but as always an enjoyable read and glad to see you've managed to get some more out. I'm about to hit the hay, so I haven't the energy to comment on everything, but 321s the best EMU? No that's 323s!

68008 is getting as bad as 158884! <(

Wish I could have done the NVR gala though as it looks like it was an awesome time. One day I'll get the track covered!

Funnily enough I've only ever had two Chiltern 68 runs. Guess which one is in those two. Yup, 68008 ;)

Don't need them now though! I got them with much shorter festers than you too [emoji38]!

Dusty Bins are certainly the best! I have very fond memories of them from when I used to live near Wolverton and MK when they were in Silverlink so that's the reason they're the best. Starships are alright as long as they aren't LM ones!

I'm sure 68008 is getting very bad now ;). I'm missing it too now. I haven't had it for...

9 days ;)
Because you cycled between them! Neither would count under my rules in that circumstance

They'd half count for you though (so you'd just need to go back and do it in reverse).

*wonders how 185143 will get the likes of Shippea Hill in, with only 1 service a day during the week and 2 services on a Saturday* ;)

It isn't the sort of station where you want to be walking the ~ 5 miles to Littleport along a single carriageway road at national speed limit with no pavements

And how will you get to the station (as unlike Denton/Reddish South there be no handy bus);)

(Unless you fancy a mere 12 hour fester in between the 07:25 arriving from Cambridge to the 19:29 calling from Norwich on a Saturday)

Can a cold be good?

The answer to the title of this report is yes! Why, I hear you ask. Well, I'm trying to hear you ask. Trying because I'm writing this on a scrap piece of A5 paper while listening to both music and 68013 on the 25th of July! Anyway, the 27th of April started like a normal Wednesday, which is nothing weird as it was a Wednesday. The bad news was that I had an annoying cold. I still haven't explained how they can be good have I. Read on to find out!

I got up early as usual and got my hour and a half of maths done before we headed out for my brother's drama class (he certainly is rather dramatic) at 09:25, the plan being (as usual) for me to do some English while he was in his session and then head onto the swimming pool. As planned when we got there, I did some English but mum kept on noticing my coughing and, after about half an hour, she asked if I was up to going to the pool. I said yep but mum continued and said that if it wasn't then I could go to Brum and come back with dad. Cue lots of coughing and saying that I thought that it'd be a good idea! Swimming pool or Birmingham? Not hard at all!

We had to be quick after my brother got out of his session but one of mum's friends agreed to take him to the swimming pool and mum take me to the station and then head to the pool so T could stay and play after for a bit. We set off at 11:10 because mum wanted to finish chatting to her friends. This wasn't good news for me because I really wanted to be on the 11:25 to Brum for two reasons. The next one would be 40 minutes later and the 11:25 is a cat. Time ticked away as we headed for Leamington and I was really worried about missing it when we eventually got there at 11:23. I ran over to the ticket office and purchased my ticket before running onto platform 2. Nothing had arrived yet so I looked at the PIS and found that my wanted train was running about 20 late. While waiting for the cat, I went to get my trainspotting books from my bag and found that I'd stupidly left them at home that morning. I had a few pieces of paper in my bag though so I could easily jot down my moves and sights but it was the fact that I didn't have my platform 5 books, which are always with my trainspotting books, that annoyed me. This was because my platform 5 are my only (portable) list of what I need for haulage so I'd be going out without knowing what I need apart from the stuff I could remember - a few of my dezes and my 3 pendos amongst a few other random units.

It wasn't too long to wait and my head had to be hit after seeing the approaching cat - 68012. 'A Shropshire Mog' now appeared to be stalking me and had been my last 3 cat rides and was my next two after this! Then it was Titan twice before this one another several times! Anyway, I didn't complain at a little extra mileage with it and got on board. It was a good, thrashy run towards Birmingham and I got a call from mum somewhere in the Hatton area saying that it was incredibly unlikely that dad would make the 15:55 because he'd be having a long day working in Bromsgrove. This just gave me more time to spoon around on units in Brum so I was happy enough with it, even if it did mean not 68009 on 'H62. After a fairly uneventful run, we were arriving at Moor Street at about 12:20. I wanted to get to New Street as quick as possible for a winner so I decided to run it, saying bye to 'A Shropshire Mog' as I passed. Not having any gen meant that I was going out with both blind and with a cold but luckily neither affected me because the first thing I saw when I got onto the platform for the 12:30 to Euston was that it was a dud. Fortunately the dez on the 12:33 was spotted moments after and that was on the complete other end of the scale as it was, from memory, my last required 350/1. My memory was flawless and winner 350130 became a very good first winner for the day. International was my port of call on this one and, as usual, I checked the departure board here to see what the VT was. It said that it was a 221 so immediately knew that I'd be going for the LM service. Because of this, I didn't have too long to wait on the platforms of International before my train back, dud 350126. Another dull ride on this one back to Brum and it was certainly visible how much the 350/1s are in need of a refurb - seat covers torn completely and absolutely filthy. The unit was in awful shape (although probably not as bad as GN's 317s!) and I was glad that I was only on it for 10 minutes back to New Street.

As the dez arrived at New Street, we came alongside the pendo that would work the 13:30 to Euston. The coach number was got as we arrived to see if it's last two digits matched my last 3 pendos. They did! I had 25 minutes to kill until departure but it was a pretty appropriate waiting time considering the pendo was winner 390125. After a trip to Meal Deal for my usual, I got on and called dad to tell him the good news before relaxing in my bay of four for the journey away from Brum. I decided to go for the 'mileage move' on this one and clear it for 10 so 19.5 miles was my next best after an International leap. I decided to go for this so was Coventry bound. It's been quite a while since I've done the track between International and Cov so I noticed, once again, that after leaving International each station you pass through gets into a worse and worse area, stopping at Tile Hill before beginning to go the other way but slower (up until Coventry where it gets better really quickly for Rugby). Anyway, after just over 20 minutes, my pendo was arriving at Cov. The first thing I saw in the station was absolutely hellfire as it was betty 802 waiting for the signal on a very long and heavy 6M50. I got off the pendo as quickly as I could and ran along the platform, stopping under the road bridge (at the New Street end of the platform for anyone not knowing Cov station layout). I could hear the throb of the betty for about 20 seconds before that throb turned into a roar and it left the station on a double yellow. The noise was sensational and made my chest cavities vibrate, especially as it went under the bridge. What's makes it even better was the fact that it made that affect when I was 2 lines and one platform away from it! Imagine if you were stood next to it...

After watching the colas betty disappear down the Nuneaton line, I crossed over platforms and got in position for the next Northbound VT, which was a booked 11 car pendo. Today was no exception and it was dud 390134 that took be back towards Brum. This was a busier service that 125 but I still managed to get a decent window view seat (if there is such a thing on a 390) for the return trip. It was a pretty dull run back but it was good knowing that I now just needed two pendos to track down - 123 and 126.

Arrival at New Street was at 14:26 and just before entering the tunnels, I noticed a XC 170 sat outside of the station waiting for the signal. This was on the Cardiff service and reminded me that less than 5 minutes after arrival, it'd be leaving. I only knew of a few XC 170s that I needed but decided to go for it anyway in case it was a winner. 170114 was the unit but it turns out that it was dud. On the upside, I sat in the one coach I needed to make it a super dud so at least I got that! A quick platform change at University was needed after I got there but the connection onto the Notty bound 170 worked and I'm very happy that it did too as it was winner 170101! A short ride back to New Street in one of the bays of four and I was back to questioning what to do. I spent some time festering on the platforms, keeping an eye out for winners and, when I saw what was on the 15:14 to Euston, I was very happy. It was winner 350369 and dud 350109, the former of which was my last 350/3, meaning I'd just need two 350/2s to clear the lot! There was no way I was flagging what was once Tech's last member of the LM fleet so I jumped on board. This is the one an hour Euston service that stops at Stechford and Lea Hall so, knowing that it's a +5 onto a starship to the bat cave from Stechford, I decided to bail there as this would get me to Brum quicker.

Getting across the footbridge at Stechford took some time because loads of people alighted there and piled over the footbridge at the same time. I managed to get across with two minutes to spare (we were 2 late arriving at Stechford) before the starship back to Brum, which rolled in on time with 323207. 207 was in the usual state that LM starships are it - pretty awful but I wasn't on it for long before arriving at New Street. On the dezes, I had called dad to ask what he thought about me scoring Adderley Park on the 323 but it was a complete no, it being a very, very bad part of Brum. Apparently, when he said that Adderley Park (and Saltley) was freaking awful (I'm editing what he really said), one of his colleges looked up and nodded! I was given permission to get Adderley Park when I was with someone though, which was good.

Back at the bat cave, there was nothing that I required and I knew from past experience that there is nothing that'll give winners between 36 minutes past and 55 minutes past so I just decided to go for the 15:50 Euston pendo after seeing that the 15:54 to Euston and the 15:57 to Walsall (both dezes). It was dud 390121 that was on the Euston, so just two away from one of my winners and one away from my favorite pendo, which was a little annoying. I didn't have to wait too long for departure and only took it to International on this run. I was glad I did too because, even though 390010 is a dud, it is my second favorite pendo. Another coach marked off in this one on the ride back to the bat cave and, upon arrival at New Street, I decided to go for the XC 170 on the Cardiff bound and wait at University for dad's train back from Bromsgrove, which would be a +20 at Uni, where it would arrive at 17:00. The 16:30 to Cardiff was today formed of 170102 and I was very glad to see that it was a winner when I got home.

At Uni, I changed platforms and called dad to say that I was waiting at University for his cart. It was apparently a pair and he was in the very front of the front one. Some music was put on while I waited and his cart soon appeared on time at 17:00. I got on board the front unit, 170513, and found dad with ease. We chatted for the ride back to New Street, where I ran down the platform to ID the rear unit as 170634. I then headed back to dad and we wandered over to Snow Hell via dad's work, getting on the 17:52 when we got there. It was annoyingly a 168/0 but at least it was a 4 car one so I headed to the end of 168002 and got a seat in one of the bays of 4. The ride back to Leamington was pretty awful as it was a 168 (I wasn't the only one thinking it) so we were both glad to get off 23.25 miles later at Leam. It seems that 168002 was the only unit that I had a dud coach in that day so I did really well not knowing what coaches and winners I needed. 5 winners in a trip to Brum with both 350s and 390s down to two required ones on each class. I'd classify that a successful day!

Considering you didn't have your books with you, that was a good result! Certainly you also did well to get that lot in while down with a cold, it's not much fun riding around on trains when you're ill.

Certainly honoured to see you remembered my last LM 350 though, crikey wasn't that forever ago?!

Agreed! It isn't good fun riding around with a cold but I can still go fine with something like that.

With a memory like mine, I remember loads of things. It was most certainly a long time ago...

Why is 390010 your second favourite pendo? Which is your favourite? You know why 10 is my favourite, and I won't publish the reason! It being my first superdud pendo is just one of the reasons...

You complain about the state of the seats on 350/1s. My last London trip caused me to return on LM (after going down on VT in first with breakfast). This was my seat between Euston and Stafford...

You complain about the state of the seats on 350/1s. My last London trip caused me to return on LM (after going down on VT in first with breakfast). This was my seat between Euston and Stafford...
It appears a lot for me, I quite like the number and the fact that you always mention it when I'm with you (so I get to know it quite well)! 390122 is my fave.

Hell to the dez seat... Seems that there isn't one bit of traction that LM have where the seats aren't falling apart!

The 350/1s are looking tired for sure, but not nearly as tired as GA's 360s looked before the refurb!

LM's refreshed 319s look pristine, as do the 350/3s. The /2s aren't in bad shape, and as I remember the 323s are just fine (although the last time I was on one was 3 years ago!)

I'm not a fan of the 319s so that puts me off them but I agree about the 350/3s. I'm not a fan of the 350/2s either (at all).

More shacks on my local patch

I hadn't originally planned to go to Brum on Saturday the 30th of April, but instead do a little something in the afternoon, this being shack scratching Bearley and Claverdon. How was I going to do this? My plan was to cycle to Leam for the 13:32 to Bearley. I'd then cycle the 4 miles to Claverdon (in true Kite style) for the 14:57 back to Leam and then cycle home. But while out on my bike the day before, I got a text from forum member 185143 saying that he'd be in Brum the next day and wondered if I was free to meet up. I asked mum and dad and they were fine with me heading out so I said that I'd meet him in Brum. My plan was to cycle to Leam for the for the 08:23 and then cycle back after the 17:55 from Moor Street and it remained that way until 06:45 on the Saturday morning.

My alarm went off at 06:40 (well, 06:30 - my alarm is 10 minutes fast) and, after getting dressed, I crossed to the other boat to tell mum and dad that I'd be heading out in 15 minutes. I figured that heading out at 7' would mean that I could get to Leam for the 07:56 Worcester, which I could take to Warwick for a 165 back to Leam before the 08:23. Mum was awake and kept on asking me what time my train was, saying that she'd take me to the station. I eventually gave up and told her that I was going on the 08:23 and she insisted on driving me. I said OK and got a bowl of Crunchy Nut cornflakes (please note - These trip reports are not done to advertise this particular cereal. Nor are they done to advertise Creamy Coolers. The fact that they're in there is just a happy co-incidence). These were taken onto the other boat and I went on the forum for a bit before crossing back over again at 07:45 to wake mum if she wasn't already up. I wasn't too happy to see that it was dad that'd be taking me to Leam. One of the reasons I wanted to cycle was so he could have a lie in, having to get up at 05:17 each day of the week so far (because 47517 was a better brush than 47520). I got into the car anyway (well, I had to in order to get to Leam in time. Not to mention that he was already up and dressed, but only to take me) and we drove off towards Leamington. We didn't get stuck behind any staggering idiots who think that 40mph in a 60 limit is good (we were both quite shocked at that!) so I got to the station at 08:10. This gave me ample time to get a return to Solihull (I was planning to get a Daytripper on the cart like my last Saturday WMDT) and get onto the freezing platform.

The wind was icy and the air freezing, not to mention the fact that a frost covered parts of the station. Even with my fleece on I had to resort to the waiting room before my train! I went out of the waiting room about 20 seconds after it was announced, knowing that it'd be there less than a minute after I left. Sure enough, as I was walking up to the 5-car stop board, I could see a Chiltern 172 and a 168 approaching. It was a 5-coach formation and I had my book out, opened to the 168 page (where I planned to sit) to check which coaches I needed in it. It was 172103 leading the formation and I groaned to see that my 3 coach 168 was 168218, one of my higher mileage examples. To make things even more annoying, my only required coach in it was right at the other end of the train, where all of the normals from Marylebone, Banbury and Leam (and probably a few more stations) would have got on at. Because of this, I decided to leap in 172103 for the ride North. I needed both coaches on this so I didn't care which one I was in. I found a bay of four but the annoying thing about the 172s is that they don't have tables so I couldn't do any work for the journey towards Brum. Just after leaving Leam, I realized that I'd seen the guard in the front coach of the 168 and, with no gangway connections; he wouldn't be able to get to me to sell me a day-tripper. I decided to stay put and thought to myself that if the 172 behind us, which I should see sat at Dorridge, was one of my last 3 required for 10 miles or 172340 (my highest mileage LM one and favorite over all) then I'd bail and get my daytripper there, so not to get in a possible argument with the barrier staff at Snow Hell. Just after we left Dorridge, I saw a 172 arriving on platform 3. 172339. Dud for 10 miles. I checked to see which coaches I needed in it and it turned out that all were required. I had lots of time until I was due to meet up with 185143 so instead of staying in the Chiltern 172, I bailed for the London Midland one.

After waiting behind a family who were buying tickets to get to London for the day, I was armed with my daytripper, ready to defend myself from the foul 220s and 221s. How? By using my day-tripper! How would I use this to defend myself from the Unspeakably horrible things? Hide on the 172 until they'd passed! And that's exactly what I did, getting a bay of four on 172339 and ducking just before the late running UHT passed.

The cart got surprisingly busy at Acocks Green, so much so that I was actually wedged out by someone (who didn't bother to look for another seat). There wasn't anything decent in Tyseley today (except the resident locos), which was a shame but it wasn't long before the cart was arriving at Moor Street, somehow right time. Could someone with a degree in physics please say how the 09:09 172 at Moor Street arrived on time? I decided to stay for the journey through the tunnel and hoped to join the 09:12 to Marylebone, which would be the same pair that I had from Leam to Solihull. This would allow me to superdud either the 172 or 168 but I knew that the connection would be stupidly tight (+20 seconds at most). I decided to try it anyway and sprinted over to the first set of doors that I came to, which happened to be the same pair of doors that I'd entered when at Leam. Yep, I was going for the 172. I figured that it'd be much more likely for me to get the 168 solo again than the 172 so I may as well leave a coach in the 168 but not in the 172. I sat in a bay of 4 in 59213 and moments after I joined the cart, the doors were shut and locked. 168218 led 172103 away towards Marylebone and I was the only person (in my coach at least) to leave the train at Moor Street. Since I was at the very back of the train, I exited the station via the back entrance which, unlike a lot of stations I know, is also barriered and began the walk across to New Street, noting that superdud 165008 was on the Leam-Brum shuttle so I didn't need to get that today. It was about 09:20 when I entered the grand concourse at New Street. I decided to check to see if 390123 or 390126 was on the 09:30 to Euston but it was a dud one. The Euston dez and the Cardiff 170 were also duds so I just headed over to platform 11B and sent 185143 a text to let him know that I was on the platform that his starship from Lichfield should arrive on. He'd been on 323217 for 40 minutes so you really need to feel sorry for him! 40 minutes on a London Midland 323 with the seats falling apart and the noise almost non-existent. The Northern ones are so much better!

We didn't have a plan for this trip so, after meeting up, we headed to the concourse and looked at the departure board. There really wasn't much but we spent 10 minutes chatting so lots came off the boards during that time. I wanted to score Adderley Park at some point, not allowed to do that shack solo so we decided to go for that one first. The easiest way to do it is to take the 14 minutes past out to Stechford for a +4 or something onto a starship to Adderely Park and then wait for 20 minutes for it to come back. So we decided to do that. It was only about 09:45 at the time though, so we had a while to kill. I suggested taking the 52 minutes past starship out to Five Ways for another back in, potentially scoring a couple of coaches, but 185143 had had more than enough LM starship action for now. So we went to get some brekky (well, second brekky. I'd already had some that morning. Does this make me a hobbit?) at Meal Deal and apparently 185143 has only spent money for food in Brum there since I introduced it to him just over 2 months ago. I wasn't proud at what I got considering the time that it was but I'll say it anyway. A southern fried chicken baguette meal deal (which includes fries)... It wasn't as good as my usual chicken and bacon but it was quite tasty none the less.

We took them to the platform that the 10:14 was due to leave from, the plan being to go and sit on the train, but that went away when we found that it wasn't yet in. A bench was found (really? At a large interchange station? Not possible!) and we ate there, dud 350113 arriving before we'd finished. This was an outright winner for 185143 so that was good, and we got on board, finding a bay of four on board. It turned out to be a very busy service and we got wedged out a few minutes before the 2 late departure. The connection at Stechford wasn't in jeopardy (thankfully) and arrival was only 2 late. After we'd crossed platforms, the starship was approaching. I didn't have my platform 5 books out to check if I'd had any coaches in it and, because I was engaged in chatting, I couldn't be bothered in getting them out to check. To sum myself up, I was a forgetful idiot (yep, me). I didn't think that I'd had any coaches in 323240 because I didn't recognize the number in the moment I'd seen it. It turns out that I had had one coach in it. And that we were in that coach! While on there, I noticed a free bay of 6 first, about mid way between the two vestibule doors but, since we were only going one stop, 185143 didn't think that it was worth it. So I pointed out that there was a free bay of four, which just happened to be right next to the bay of 6! Again, a no! So I finally pointed out a bay of 2 right next to the doors but, since we were about half way towards Adderley Park at this point, he didn't even think that that was worth it! Apparently he knew that I'd sit in the bay of 2. I'm just too predictable...

Adderley Park was reached and dad was apparently right about what a horrible place it was because, when 185143 was last there (to get the shack), he saw a couple of... Well... I'm not sure. People probably isn't the right word. But they ran down, asked him if the train in the platform was the one for Brum and leaped on. Just after the train that they were on had left, a couple of police officers ran down, asking if they'd got on the train! This was when 185143 had visited, not when I was there, just to clarify. We crossed the road bridge and headed onto the other platform, after making use of the permit to travel machine in order to get one from Adderley Park for 185143. It didn't feel like such a long wait as I was chatting to someone. We tried to guess what each non stop service would be once it was announced but I had quite a good advantage knowing the timetable ;). 323240 eventually arrived again and we made sure that a coach that was required for both of us (simply not the one that we'd just sat in) was sat in for the speedy ride out to the Airport, stopping everywhere except Marston Green (so basically stopping at Stechford and Lea Hall). 185143 had looked at RTT and worked out a good move for us to get Canley, which was required for me and partly required for him (he forgot to get a photo of the station sign when he got the shack last time). This was the Euston bound LM so we had a little while before it. While 185143 went for a PNB, I decided to go over to Smiths to get a drink as I was thirsty. I didn't even get through the barriers before I remembered that I had the drink from my brekky meal deal still in my bag so I just got that out before we headed down to the platform.

185143 was telling me that the next time he saw 390010, his favorite pendo, that he'd buy a 1st class ticket to its next stop so he could make it a super dud. I suggested just standing in the vestibule if it was only a short run and he agreed that this was the best thing to do. FQ's pendo advice. Open whenever I'm on the forum ;). The two minute late pendo was supposedly an 11 coach and, since plans can change, I had my fingers crossed that 390123, 390126 or 390130 (185143's last one for all time) would appear. No way! Looks like 390010 is a case of 'you talk about it to much and there it is'! 185143 was really happy and we headed over to the vestibule of 69110 for the short ride out towards Coventry. This was also a coach score for me so I was happy enough (and I would've gone for this coach even if it was dud). The 1st class host was a bit confused as to why we were standing but after we said that we were only going to Coventry so we may as well stand, he was fine with it. Soon 390010 was arriving at Cov and we left from the same door we got on at, 390010 finally superdudded (is that a word?) for 185143. I wonder how easily a diesel dez would fit into a pendo. OK, fine. I'll stop ;). 185143 got a video of it leaving towards London and, as the nameplate coach passed me, I noticed that the name had changed from 'A decade of progress'. Well, the old name depends how you define progress. If you define progress as cramped, small windowed 390s from excellent MK2s and 87s then sure, it's progress. In other words, you'd have to be insane to think that the pendos are progress from what was there before them.

A winner shack for both of us was up next so we traipsed over the footbridge and went to one of the benches to wait for the dez, which was running a few minutes late. After a few minutes, the dez was arriving and it'd be dud 350119 taking us to shack score 2 (for me; shack score one for 185143), Canley. This was a very short ride to Canley, where 185143 got a permit to travel from the machine. On the Euston bound platform, there was a person singing at the top of his voice to the music in his headphones, seemingly oblivious to everything around him. This provided some entertainment before the Euston dez arrived, dud 350107 working it today. We got on board for the short ride back to Coventry on this fairly busy service before leaving London Midland for the time being and moving to VT once more. We had a good 10/15 minutes to wait before the New Street pendo so we got a seat on one of the benches (the same one that we were at while waiting for the dez to Canley), noticing that a ticket to Brum was still randomly on it. 185143 couldn't seem to wait 10 minutes to find out what pendo we'd be getting so he tweeted VT to ask what it'd be. After about 5 minutes (brilliant service!) they came back saying that it'd be 126! Brilliant! This was one of my last two pendos and was also one of 185143's so we'd both scored majorly. 185143 thanked VT and we both got up to get further along the platform, away from the normals who had began to spill out of their 'holding zone'. We were obviously both very happy with the news and the arrival of winner 390126 was even better. Score!

On the ride back towards Brum, the disabled table seat was had (no disabled people came - if they did we'd obviously have moved). 185143 text VT to ask if 390123 or 390130 were out and about but unfortunately my last one (123) was heading South through Macclesfield and would be on the Mancc circuit all day and 185143's last one (130) was out of service at Longsight. Knowing that we didn't have to pay attention to pendos again today now though was good so, once we got to the bat cave, it was over to meal deal for the second time, this time getting my usual chichen and bacon baguette meal deal before heading to platform 10 for a Uni leap on the Hereford to hopefully get a winner coach (or two) and maybe a winner unit for 185143. Alas it was 170634 on the 12:49 to Hereford, which was already a superdud for 185143. I needed one coach in it but we boarded at the front and found a decent bay of four so couldn't be bothered moving to the back for my coach. It wasn't long before we got to Uni. After changing platforms here, it was onto the ex Hereford service, another 3 car one. This one had more luck for both of us because, if I remember correctly, it was required for the year for my company and I needed two coaches in it, one of which we sat in for the ride back to Brum. It was 170633 that took us back.

Having seen one of my required XC 170s earlier in the day, one of the 170/3s (of which I needed both XC examples) and worked out that it'd be on the 13:30 to Cardiff. I'd been obsessing over trying to get it for some ridiculous reason but, even though it was required for 185143, he didn't want to get it on the Cardiff run. The 13:25 to North Wales was the one that he wanted to get so we could go onto the 172 line so I agreed, hoping that we'd be able to get it on the return journey. I checked RTT and found that I'd have 8 minutes to get from New Street to Moor Street for my intended train home if we got it on its way back from Cardiff. This suited me so I put that into my head and remembered it. 158832 and 158825 were on the 13:25 and would be our ride out to Smethwick, going for a required coach for both of us in the rear unit.

We'd just missed a Stourbridge bound at Galton Bridge so we decided to head to The Hawthorns to pick up the next Stourbridge one there. 172213 was on the first one heading towards Snow Hell so we took that for the very short hop to The Hawthorns, where we changed platforms just in time for the approaching 13:39, managing to get past the crowd control in operation for some strange reason. 185143 was hoping to get a few of his last required 172s outright (he does them both outright and for the year. He obviously needs far fewer things from the former), especially his last required 3 car one, which was surprisingly my favorite 172 and my highest mileage LM one. Both of us were very happy to see that the first 3 car 172 was 172340, 185143 because he cleared the 3 car ones, me because it was my fave (obviously) and more mileage would be added to its total. We were both hoping to go to the same place on this one so it was easy to decide where we should go on this one. All the way to Stourbridge! Another 9 miles added to 340's total put it at 67.75 miles, which made it 2.25 miles lower than my highest mileage 172 overall, at 70. When you're at Stourbridge on the bash and you have time, there's one thing that you have to do. Can you think of what it is? Come on! Oh, wait. I forgot that you guys can't tell me before I finish the report and put it up! I guess I'll just have to tell you then. The parry people mover!

It was a tiny wait before the PPM for this week bounced in from Stourbridge Town, this being 139001. It was obviously a dud as I've had both PPMs previously. We bounced along the line to Stourbridge Town and didn't leave the 139 here. Back to Stourbridge Junction on this but, as I wanted to get my last two required shacks between Stourbridge and Smethwick (both of which are half hourly served), we decided to do another return on the PPM. The service that stops at my shacks was just over quarter of an hour away when the PPM arrived after the first return trip so it'd make sense to do another return on that instead of kill time on Stourbridge Junction station. 001 bounced us back along the line and then back again to Stourbridge, where we had to say bye to the PPM and wait for a few minutes until the 172 would arrive. It was 172342 that would be our next unit and a winner coach for both of us was picked out for the ride to shack score 3, Old Hill. There is a good +5 here if coming from the Stourbridge direction so that was made us of and, after a couple of minutes waiting, we boarded 172345 for the ride to my last required shack between Stourbridge and Wythall/Bicester, Lye. The best connection here is a +12 as the 172 from the Brum direction needs to get to Stourbridge, terminate and then get back to Lye. It began to rain while we were here but it's luckily a station with a shelter so we didn't get wet while waiting for 172345 to reappear. Using RTT, we worked out that by taking this to Galton Bridge, we'd be able to get onto the 15:22 ATW to New Street so we decided to go for that. The 172s were left after getting off 345 and we headed downstairs to get onto the Brum-Wolves line.

A short wait was had before we saw what was approaching on the ATW service. We were both incredibly, incredibly surprised to see what was leading the 158 towards Birmingham. It was a 150! 185143 got a photo as I very quickly flicked to the 150 page of my platform 5 DMU book. was very, very glad that it was a 150, even more so after seeing that it was 150213 taking us to Brum, along with dud 158821. We both decided to go for the 150 and had to stand for the run to Brum. 185143 needed both coaches in the 150 but none in the 158 so it was good that we went for the 150 thrash for the 4.25 mile journey to New Street.

While at Galton Bridge, we had decided to go up the Cross City line to get 185143's last required shack on it, Shenstone. I also needed Shenstone so I was happy enough with this plan, even if it did mean loads of time on starships. I also needed Litchfield City and Blake Street but we wouldn't have time to get them and get back to University in time for the 170/3 that I'd mentioned earlier. This meant that I'd have to go back up at a later date but if I were in Brum anyway then it wouldn't be too bad. So, going with this plan, we bailed at the bat cave and then moved over to the platform for the 15:45 to Four Oaks as a fill in move before the service to Shenstone. 185143 wasn't very happy after seeing the approaching starship - 323217. This is the one that he had suffered the incredibly long and tedious journey on earlier in the day from Litchfield Trent Valley to Birmingham New Street but he agreed to take it as long as we weren't in the coach that he was in earlier and that it was taken no further than Sutton Coldfield. This was fine with me so we got on board the fairly empty starship and got in a bay of four for the journey away from Birmingham.

We were so engaged in chatting that the journey seemed to fly by (well, as much as one can on an LM starship on the Cross City line). In fact, I just noticed Sutton Coldfield as we were departing! This wasn't liked much by 185143 but we both scored the crossover into the bay platform at Four Oaks. Even though neither of us do crossovers or stuff like that (we both work at a Baker level), it was good to know we'd had it. The change of platforms at Four Oaks took a couple of minutes away from our fester for the Litchfield Trent Valley bound service, the 16:17, which eventually arrived with 323216. It was only 3 stops on this service and we were soon alighting at Shenstone, shack score 5 for me, 2 for 185143. There isn't too much time to change platforms here but we managed it and 185143 got his mandatory photo of the station sign before 323206, a starship that I don't like because it seems to stalk me, arrived. The coach we boarded was completely empty upon departure from Shenstone so we hoped that it'd be like this all the way to Brum. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and in a pretty dramatic way for us. In a way that doesn't make me feel too good about shack scoring Blake Street. Several (probably about 8) 'animals' (I think that's the best way to describe the locals of Blake Street) boarded the train at Blake Street and wedged us out immediately. They were only in their teens (making them very dangerous creatures indeed ;)), the youngest actually saying that she was 14. The one that sat next to me started trying to make conversation (and succeeded - I wasn't going to ignore these people, not knowing how they'd react). They asked where we were going, how old each of us were, if we did drugs (not kidding! They even listed several!), where we lived (185143 said Manchester, as did I) and if we went to the same school. That's where things went wrong and 185143 said no as I said yes. They noticed but nothing worse happened. Apparently they didn't believe that I was from Mancc or that I was 14 and apparently I look 12 and sound like I'm from Barnsley (which, as those of you who have met me will know, if utter rubbish). One of them told 185143 to give one of his books (not sure if they were platform 5 ones but they were the same sort of thing). He handed over his old one, not knowing if they'd destroy it but luckily they didn't. It really wasn't a nice situation, that's for sure. We said that we were heading to Brum but a thought had come to me the moment they joined me and, as we were approaching Four Oaks, I said that this was our stop. 185143 wouldn't have thought of this at all apparently but didn't act surprised and followed me to the doors. The gang said that this wasn't Brum but the doors had unlocked at this point and there was no way that we were staying. I called over saying 'close enough' before we stepped off and away from the horrid group.

We spent a few minutes discussing what'd just happened (I probably don't need to say that they weren't talked about using nice language) before seeing the Four Oaks terminator arrive. This was the reason that I didn't get up at Butlers Lane (the station after the gang joined us) - the next service was one that started at Four Oaks so it'd be a 20-minute fester instead of a 10. 185143 was very happy to see what number it was as it was one of his few outright required starships - 323222. We were both wondering if the gang left 206 at Sutton Coldfield to see if we were on the one behind but we were both very relieved to see that they hadn't.

We decided to split our journey part way down as we had time before the train that we had to be on to get to Uni in time for the XC 170 (I still haven't forgotten about it!) and bailed at Erdingdon, where a tight connection onto a Four Oaks direction service was pulled off as a fill in move. 323213 took us to Chester Road where another, less tight connection was made onto a Brum one, which was 323207. This was to be taken to Brum and it was an uneventful ride back, thankfully without any awful passengers.

Once back at the bat cave, we didn't have too long to wait before the Cardiff bound 170 that would take us to Uni for the 170/3. We saw it approach and, after seeing that it was a 2 car one, I didn't have high hopes for a winner as I only need two of the XC examples. It highly surprised me to see that it was one of my last two, winner 170518! 185143 was also very happy with the pick that XC had given, this being his last required 170/5 (outright) from XC! Score for both of us then! We got on board, me noticing that the lighting was different in this one, and an on time departure from New Street was very good as it certainly helped our connection at Uni. We didn't even need to run after getting to University as the Notty bound wasn't even in yet. I looked at the PIS and wasn't too happy at all to see that it was running 4 late. Even though this is only a tiny amount, I only had 8 minutes to get onto my cart home from Moor Street if the 170 was on time. 8 late only gave me 4 minutes! This wasn't good but the arrival of winner 170398 was very good. This was my first XC 170/3 and I didn't like the fact that it was pretty much identical to all of the others except the headlights. We were only on it for a few minutes though and the trundle to Brum was over quickly. 185143 didn't think that there was any chance I'd make my connection onto the 17:55 from Moor Street, it being 17:52 when I stepped onto the platform at New Street. Won't stop me trying though!

I said bye to 185143 while on the 170 and sprinted up the stairs, having my ticket ready for the barriers. It was then full speed towards Moor Street, getting to the platform at Moor Street gasping for breath at 17:54! I leapt in the front unit in the pair of 170s, these being 168322 and incredibly low mileage (3.25) 168325. I was very glad that the connection made but wasn't so glad to note that my train was full of drunk football hooligans, along with a few people (like me) who wanted nothing to do with them. This explained the crowd control at The Hawthorns earlier in the day and I was glad to get a seat, even if it was a pretty naf one, on this service. Some music was put on for the journey to Leam as I thought back on the excellent day. Some brilliant company, 4 winner units and 5 winner shacks and 2 minutes platform-platform, New Street-Moor Street.

Thanks to 185143 for an excellent day!

I was wondering what you were going to say about the starship we got on at Shenstone??????.

Tech will no doubt be along to back me up in saying I endured worse in the winner coach of an ex Merseyrail 142 on the way home from the Metrolink bash we both did together! It is in his trip report, but the timescale of his trip reports being uploded after a bash is measured in days rather than months??????.

It wasn't nice, that's for sure!

I'll re-read Tech's trip report now to see. I'm getting better (under 3 months behind with that one)!

EDIT: Just re-read the report. Ouch... To both the pacer and the football hooligans!

Good read FQ - have all the LM 323s been re-motored now? :(

I agree with you about the Pendos - although they're quicker and bearable in 1st, I'd rather sit in standard on LHCS.

I'm a fan of the 139, to the extent that I took a trip specifically to try it!

Adderley Park... I always wondered why even the LM stoppers don't stop there! I always remember it being associated with delays due to trespassers and objects chucked onto the OHLE...

Thanks guys! I'm not sure if all the starships have been re-motored yet. I don't think so.

Brum in the North

This 'outing' started just like a normal Wednesday. I got up at 07:45 on the 4th of May, got brekky and went on the laptop for a bit. My brother is rather dramatic so he needs a drama group, which just happens to be in Warwick. As I write this, I realize that there must be a glitch in the Matrix because I've said this all before. I occasionally head to Brum on the 10:04 and back on the 10:55 to go swimming after my brother's drama group but most of the time I head with them to drama and then go swimming. Today, mum was alright going via Leam to drop me off so I walked the dogs and did a little revision before heading out at 09:20. Mum wasn't sure if we were going swimming today so I told her to keep in tough and say to me if they were. I was dropped off at just after 09:40 and went in hunt of a ticket (rest assured - I wasn't going around looking for someone else's ticket)!

The queue for the ticket office was really long, even though both windows were manned, so I went across to the inside ticket machine, where there was no one queuing. I was through the barriers with my ticket before the first person in the ticket office queue. I went straight to the end of platform 2, in the glorious sunshine, to wait for the 10:04. I had a hunch of what cat would be powering me to Brum based on the diagrams from the day before and, sure enough, after a 15 minute wait, 68012 rolled in. I got a partition bay of 4 for the thrashy ride North.

Mum called just before Warwick to say that the swimming pool was closed today so we couldn't go anyway! She wanted to know if I wanted to go out for the day! Oh, yes please ;)!

The rest of the journey went smoothly and 'A Shropshire Mog' was soon arriving at Moor Street. I'd seen one of my only 2 superdud LM 172s at Tyseley so I knew that it was unlikely that a superdud one would appear. With not much around New Street at this time (the 09:50 to Euston is a 221), I decided to do a Snow Hell leap. I saw that the 10:49 to Stourbridge was a pair, so knew that I'd get a winner coach. 172215 was leading 172221 on this service. I needed both coaches in each so I decided to go in the rear coach of 221, this being 79221. I bailed at Snow Hell and crossed over to platform 3. During the wait, I saw Midland Metro tram 37 heading to Bull Street, meaning I only needed tram 17 for sight of the Midland ones. I wouldn't be able to get over to Bull Street in time for it and I didn't have a valid ticket for the Metro so haulage would have to wait. 172339 rolled in a couple of minutes late so I got a seat in the middle coach as it was one of my two required ones.

Earlier on at Leamington, I'd sent forum member 185143 a text asking if he could ask VT if my last pendo, 390123, was due through Brum today. As the 172 was leaving the Snow Hell tunnels at Moor Street, I received a text back from him. It said that it should be due through in 10 minutes and again at 20:00. I knew that the 10:10 is a booked 221 so though that it would be the 15 minutes past to Scotland. Part way through my run over to New Street, I got another text from him confirming my suspicions. But he said 11:15, not 10:15. It was at that point that I realized that I was an hour out of sync with VT stuff. Oh well, who cares?! I ran over to platform 6 and saw loads of people coming up the escalator as I went down. Was the end of my hunt truly here?

Yes!!! It was! 390123! The name, Virgin Glory, truly was glorious! I got on board and found a good bay of two in coach B. After getting in my seat, I thanked 185143 for the gen. Once again, a huge thanks mate! I called dad to say the great news and almost immediately after saying bye, me moved off. Class 390 cleared!

I got another text from 185143 asking if I was taking it to Crewe. I replied saying that I'd only be going to Sandwell because I wasn't valid to Crewe. I'd suggested that 185143 would get his last pendo on a tiny Stockport leap so he didn't hesitate to tell me that Stockport to Piccadilly is the same mileage as Sandwell to New Street. Because of this, I said that I'd go to Wolves but he pointed out that it was only marginally better than Sandwell. That's it. I located the guard and bought a bargain ticket that would get me to Crewe and beyond. I then got my seat again for the remainder of my hours journey, half of which was already gone.

At Stafford, I noticed a dez just outside the station, apparently on a New Street bound but it was stationary. There was a pendo sat stationary in the centre roads and a dez supposedly heading to Euston was sat in platform 2 with its doors open. I checked RTT for Stafford to see if there was a problem but everything was running to time! I decided that the dez was randomly stopped for some reason, the pendo was in platform one and not in the centre roads on the ex Liverpool and the Euston dez was the Euston dez (and was confirmed on RTT). 123 continued towards Crewe and I looked up just before Norton Bridge because it'd be the first time that I'd passed since the new track. I then noticed that I wouldn't just be seeing it. I'd be travelling on it! We were on the slows! Sure enough, we peeled away from the other lines and rejoined them about a minute later. It looks like the fasts were closed because there were engineering trains and stuff stopped on them. Alas no winners on any of them but I was able to view stuff in Basford Hall, including cat 16, a winner for sight. I arrived on platform 11, with 390123 having gone from 0 to 52.75 miles in just under an hour.

I knew that I had to be on the 14:01 pendo to New Street, giving me two options of what to do in the hour and 45 minutes before it. My first was the 10-minute late 12:16 pendo to Stockport for another one back, my second being a 323 to Sandbach and back. I decided that if the 323 was required then I'd go for that but if it was dud then I'd go for the pendo. I would judge it on if the pendo was required but... ;)

I wandered to the end of platform 5, where the sidings that every other starship stabled are, and looked over at which one was there before checking my notes and seeing that it was a winner. This gave me a chance to get some lunch before the train and, knowing that there was a Tesco Express at the petrol station about a 2-minute walk from the station. With 12 minutes until my starship, I had to hurry and the busy road outside the station didn't help this. After what was a minute, but felt like an eternity, it was safe to cross the road to get to the Tesco for lunch - a breakfast triple sarnie, a bag of kettle chips, a Ribena and a donut, the first 3 being in the £3 meal deal. I headed back to the station after getting that and boarded waiting winner 323231. I was in the very front coach in the very front bay of 4 so it was a loud run up. I gave a wave to 87035, 47192 and 47712 as I passed on my way to the first shack score of the day, Sandbach. Despite the 2 late departure from Crewe, my connection (a +11) was still easily made at this footbridge shack. I could see the 12:51 to Crewe approaching from quite a distance but could only ID it as dud 323233 when it got close. I went for the middle coach on this one for the journey back to Crewe.

I should have had a +64 here onto the pendo back, with not much available to take me anywhere in the meantime, the other option getting me back to Crewe a minute after my pendo back. A look at RTT for something to do shown a +2 at Alsager from a Euston dez to a Crewe one but, as I didn’t know the method of changing platforms, this could be difficult. The service that'd form the 13:07 to Derby arrived at 59 minutes past with a winner on so I had a quick think and decided against going anywhere. That was until I saw the guard for the 13:02 LM to Euston stood outside the unit chatting with one of the platform staff. I asked if Alsager had a footbridge to change platforms at and, after a quick think, she said yes so I leap aboard dud 350375. I walked through from the rear of the train until I found a free bay of four just the other side of the completely empty (and worthless) 1st class. Just after we'd departed and passed the 'other' side of Crewe LNWR (where I scored 08521 for sight), the guard that I'd asked about Alsager came through and sat opposite me for a moment and apologized to me, saying that it was Kidsgrove with the footbridge and that Alsager has a level crossing. That's the +2 gone then. There was no point in bailing at Alsager so I decided to get the winner 153 that was following us and try to make a +1 at Crewe from the ex Derby EMT. I continued to Kidsgrove (shack score 2) and, just after 375 arrived, the Crewe one departed so I probably would have made the Alsager connection (with a +7). Oh well, I'll get at least one winner unit out of it (which I wouldn't have got if I went for the dez back because it was a 350/3). A look at RTT said that I could either go for Longport or Stoke on the 153. They both had their pros and cons, the main pros for Longport being winner shack and good connection, the main cons being the fact that it only has an hourly service so there was a chance of me being stranded if the return working didn't appear or EMT decided to curse me and put a 222 on it. I still hadn't decided when winner 153313 squealed its way around the 15mph curve. I didn't see the guard next to the front door so I headed to the back and boarded there so I could ask him if it's easy to change platforms at Longport. Without hesitation, he said that it was and that there was a footbridge at the Stoke end of the platform. I got a seat and still wasn't sure where to bail, the uncertainty of what would come and take me back to Crewe, being the main thing. What should I do?

Just before Longport, the guard came out of the rear cab again and I asked him if he knew what the service back would be. I was very surprised to hear him say the actual unit number that it should be - 156415. I thanked him and decided to go for shack 3, Longport. I should have had a +10 here and, in dire need of a PNB, I wasn't too happy to see that it was running two minutes late. Not to mention that my connection at Crewe was now in even high jeopardy that it already was. I was very glad when winner 156415 finally arrived and, after visiting the toilet, I got a bay of 4. The guard on this service must have (well, I say must have. Probably had is more accurate) seen my top, which has the double arrows BR logo on because he asked if I was a railway enthusiast and told me what was currently at Derby RTC. Looks like there were quite a few rail enthusiast guards on the Derby-Crewe circuit that day (because two for two isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination)!

I was first at the door on the approach to Crewe, staring over at platform 5 as we arrived. Blast! The pendo was there and on time. We came to a full stop at 14:00:43, with the doors being unlocked moments later. I immediately got off and ran for the open doors of 390151, getting on seconds before the doors shut and locked. I was in coach U and, with first class one side of me, I headed into U. I was surprised how quiet this train was; such much so that I easily found a bay of four to myself. I was surprised that we braked for and kept a slow pace at Norton Bridge before accelerating again after it. I'm guessing (and hoping) that it's just a TRS and that the line speed hasn't been reduced on the fasts!

I was thinking about bailing at Wolves for the ex Shrewsbury 170 to Sandwell and then 390151 onwards to New Street in order to score a coach in a 170 and another in 151 but I was comfy in my bay of four so I decided not to move. No one wedged me out for the remainder of the journey and arrival at New Street was on time at 15:05. I'd called dad while the pendo was having its 15-minute wait at Wolverhampton to arrange when we should meet. He said to call me when I started walking up to his work. I did so and was only waiting outside his work for 5 minutes before dad came out. We headed to an excellent coffee shop close by but unfortunately they didn't have the rocky road. We stayed for drinks though dad getting his usual latté. I wanted my usual white chocolate milkshake but unfortunately they were out of white chocolate. A vanilla milkshake was suggested instead and, instead of giving us two stamps on a loyalty card, he gave us a full one for a free drink next time. What a soche guy! We enjoyed our drinks before walking over to Moor Street and going to the centaury lounge, getting a choccy brownie and a caramel shortcake, which we gut in half on 68012's train, each having half of one, half of the other. A Shropshire Mog provided good thrash for the journey back to Leam where, after hearing it thrash away towards London, we walked back to the car and headed home.

A wonderful, unexpected day out, clearing my pendos. Once again, a huge thanks to 185143 for the gen!

How did you get gen before you knew me?[emoji1]

There's loads of cranks on the EMT services out of Derby! Shoutout to the very nice Jamaican guard who gave me and a friend a massive slab of Jamaican rum cake when we were on a Derbyshire Wayfarer (think of the constant stream of 22X's[emoji1] [emoji1] ) on the way to winner shack Tutbury and Hatton.

The second trip report today!

The Northern Metro

On the 9th of May (a Monday), I'd been invited to one of my brother's friend’s birthday parties at this funky looking trampolining place. After I heard that it'd coast my brother's friend's mum an extra £15 for me to go though, I said that I wouldn't. Mum then gave m the day off!

Fast forward to Sunday and I was in bed for 22:30 ready for what I knew would be a bad night sleep. I never sleep well on the night before a train trip, even if it's just a mini one to Brum, which this wouldn't be. I was going in on the 06:24 and back on the 15:55 as usual but I was going to Mancc today, not Brum. I could get a bargain ticket for Mancc so I decided that even though 3 hours isn't much, it's better than nothing.

My alarm went off at 05:20 and I was amazed at how light it was. I hadn't been up at this time for ages (at least a month), which is why. I got dressed and headed to the other boat, getting teeth cleaned before putting dad's coffee on because he was still in bed. Dad eventually got up and after a few minutes preparing for the day ahead, I put my shoes on, which were still damp from a water fight that I'd had the day before with my brother and Nathan (don't ask). We headed out just after 05:45 in the car, getting to Leam at about 06:00. I hadn't taken a jumper or anything with me today because it was warm enough and I didn't even regret it on the walk to the station. I got my tickets for the day at the ticket office and dad collected some tickets from the ticket machine for a later trip before we went onto the platform. It was 06:13 when we got on the platform and on the walk to the station, dad wanted to know how many 332s I needed. I looked at my books and told him, also saying the 2 coach Chiltern 165s that I needed (012, 017 and 024). The time soon came to get ready for the 06:24 and I went into position and watched it arrive. Score! 165012! Of all the two coach 165s that it could've been, it was one of my winners! We got the usual seats and there wasn't much to note on the journey down (nothing in Tyseley) except 68015 on 1H15. We didn't hang around at Snow Hell to see the 07:07 cat and instead just exited the hole. Dad asked me if I wanted brekky because he was still full from the Chinese the night before. I said that if dad didn't want it then we'd flag it but just after bull street tram stop, dad said that it wouldn't be right not to go to Subway so we headed down and had a nice chat with the guy who usually gets us brekky as he prepared us our usual. It was dad's turn to pay this time so he kindly got them and we headed to his work, mega melts in hand.

We ate and chatted and I was able to see that 67002 was on the Mancc diagram. This was good because it was the first thing that I planned to get in Mancc, but only for a 185143 leap (out to Occy Road ;)). I headed out at exactly 8' and got to New Street just 5 minutes later. The 08:15 to Edinburgh was booked out (and in, strangely enough) from platform 6 so I immediately headed down and, when I got onto the platform, I saw my 11-coach pendo curving its way towards me. I walked close to the end of the platform, noting 43304 arriving at the front of 1V44 before, again, turning my attention to look at the arriving pendo. 390124. Rats! This was one of my higher mileage examples and another 52.75 miles would just encourage it. I got a seat in of the only free pairs, this being the backwards facing, left hand side (window) pair at the very front of the train (or sad excuse of one). A 221 rolled in just before the Plymouth left, blocking my view of it as the tram thrashed away. I saw the rear powercar fade away into the tunnel but couldn't ID it. A text was sent to dad saying the following. 'Hi dad! What was the powercar with 43304 this morn? A 221 got in the way of it'. Back on time, 390124 left New Street on the usual stagger through the Midlands.

On the approach to Wolverhampton, the guard announced it as approaching 'Wolverhampton High Level'. I didn't know why at first but when dad suggested that he was probably and enthusiast giving a nod to the old Great Western Railway (the one with kettles, not trams), it all made sense. There were 4 track machines at Stafford but, because I’m not Nathan, I didn't care at not being fast enough to write them all down (they were all duds anyway). Just like the last time I'd passed Norton Bridge on the fasts, we slowed quite a lot for it. I do hope it's just a TSR!

The gherkins at Basford Hall decided to taunt me. I need 66512, 66557 and 66619 to clear the FL ones. Sat in Basford Hall was 66511 and 66617! To make things even more annoying, they were the only two things I could ID in there! There wasn't anything special in or around Crewe and we arrived a few minutes late on platform 11. I wanted to be on the 09:11 to Piccadilly but, because I had a +5 at Piccadilly onto shovel 2, which was now almost definitely going to miss.I saw that it was an 11 coach approaching at 16 minutes past. I was really glad to see which one it was; 390122, the best pendo. I saw a free bay of 4 as it was arriving so I headed for that but found that the other 3 seats were reserved when a couple of people sat opposite me, a third about to sit next to me. I decided for all of our benefit (well, OK. Mine.) that I'd move so I changed from coach B to coach A and went in the same pair of seats that I was in on 390124. Don't worry - I didn't take the seats out of 124 and put them in 122! I meant the same seat number.

I'd got a text back from dad just before Stafford and wasn't amused at what it had said. 'You could get the tram number from your 221 was that ;)? 43384 was with 304 this morning'. I'd thanked him for the gen but also told him off for suggesting that I'd got on a 221, telling him what happened in detail, including platform numbers. I wasn't happy to see that I'd lost signal by the time my long text was completed and that it had failed to send. Crewe was the first time I had signal since Stafford and, not wanting to redo the text, I just called dad to say. I also intended to call mum at the same time but forgot. I regretted that at Stockport viaduct, when she called me, but was understanding. Soon the pendo was approaching Piccadilly and I was one of the first up in my coach because I wanted to walk down a few coaches so I was in a good place for the footbridge in case we arrived at 50 minutes past. I knew that this was too much to ask because 'Penny the Pendolino' came to a stand at 52 minutes past. I still ran for it in case the shovel was late but it'd left right on time and I was at an empty platform 13 and 14. Oh well. It's only 0.5 miles off a dud shovel! I called dad to say and the moment after I'd hung up, my first winner in Mancc was arriving. Hello 319368!

I got on board for the short hop, just missing a pair of 156s (one winner, one dud) at Occy Road. They were running slightly late, meaning that my next train was held up on arrival but it didn't affect me. 319375 gave me my 3rd winner of the day, two of which were in Mancc. I'd only been there 10 minutes and already scored 2! At Occy Road, I'd heard an announcement saying that the 10:07 to Blackpool was 7 late. It also seems that Northern is stealing reasons from TPE because the reason it's late is because a member of train crew was unavailable. With that announcement, I was surprised to see a pair of 150s (one winner, one dud) leaving Piccadilly on the Blackpool as my 319 arrived. I thought that this might mean that they'd wait at Occy Road for the member of traincrew and, since my aim for today was the Metrolink between Deansgate and Cornbrook, I decided to test my theory (the Blackpool stops at Deansgate). High mileage 185129 provided my duddage out to Occy Road on the 10:07 to Lime Street and, when it was arriving at Occy Road, I could see the pair of 150s in the platform that the 175s heading to Piccadilly use. I crossed over to the 150s after leaving the diesel dez and got a seat in the front unit, winner 150215 This was leading dud 150112. Before boarding, I asked the driver when he though he'd be heading out. He thought that it'd be just after the 185 had left so I got on board. It was slightly after the 185 had left because we also needed to wait for a dud 156 to depart on the Lime Street stopper. I viewed the Hazel Grove when it arrived but it was a pair of duds so I stayed put for the ride out to Deansgate.

0.25 miles later, I was looking at the departure board for trains back towards Mancc. The next train wasn't for another 10 minutes and was an ex Southport (so likely a 142), meaning I didn't have anything to lure me away from the Metrolink. I ran over to the Metrolink platforms and, after checking the numbers of the arriving pair, I leapt aboard winner 3029 and dud 3010 for my first of many Cornbrook runs that day. The first pair of trams that I saw at Cornbrook (excluding the ones that I'd just come off) had a winner on so I got on board winner 3066 and dud 3082. My next few moves were simply Deansgate to Cornbrook leaps so I can't go into much detail about them so it'll simply be a bunch of numbers and stations. I hope it doesn't put you to sleep! At Deansgate, dud 3023 and winner 3030 took me took me back out to Cornbrook for winner 3071 and dud 3067 back. Dud 3089 and winner 3096 were up next for the ride back out to Cornbrook before dud 3077 and winner 3065 took me back to Deansgate. Dud 3011 with winner 3028 took me back to the Cornbrook and, after letting a single dud and a couple of dud pairs go, I boarded winner 3080 and dud 3091 for the ride back to Deansgate. I let one go before winner 3013 and dud 3049 arrived. Back out to Cornbrook!

This is where I did something slightly different, when a double dud arrived heading towards the city centre and a winner with a dud arrived heading to East Didsbury. Since I'd just had track out to Media City and the stop before Eccles in this direction, it was winner track in the East Didsbury/Altrincham/Airport direction. This meant that I'd score 3018, which was with dud 3019, a bit of winner track and a winner shack. Sounds like a good deal! It actually felt like being on heavy rail after leaving Cornbrook. At Trafford Bar tram stop, it looked so much like heavy rail. There was a road bridge just before the high Metrolink platforms and stairs, which led onto the road bridge. You have to cross the bridge and then go down a really long ramp to get onto the other platform. While doing this, I missed a winner but it was only going to Deansgate so I could easily get it later. There was a pair a few metres behind it waiting for my winner to clear the stop so I got on those, even though it was double duds 3020 and 3031. I didn't know if I should go to Deansgate or Cornbrook on this but after seeing that the next tram was only 1-minute behind at Cornbrook, I decided to see if I could score another. This turned out tot be a good call because the trams right behind were 3054 and 3055, the latter being a winner. It was a simple cross platform change at Deansgate onto the winner I'd seen at Trafford Bar and after a couple of minutes, 3006 was taking me back out to Cornbrook. I had two options to get back to Deansgate in the space of two minutes or I'd have an 8-minute wait. The first one was a dud for the day and the second wasn't much better, being double duds 3036 and 3033 but I hadn't had them so far so that made it slightly better. After getting to Deansgate, there was only a dud tram due to leave in the next 8 minutes so I bade farewell to the Metrolink after 12 winners for haulage and 1 winner for sight and headed for the heavy rail.

There was an ex Blackpool pair of 156s due in 5 so I waited for them (they arrived at 11:52). It was a very busy dud 156489 and winner 156468 so I had to stand for my quarter-of-a-mile journey to Occy Road. The horror! After it arrived, the ex Lime Street 319 was right behind, meaning I didn't need to wait long for it. As I waited, I began thinking that 319368 from earlier would appear again on this one but it wasn't and was instead 319363, a dud that was fairly high mileage (for me on a 319). Back at Piccadilly, I decided to view the Lime Street diesel dez, which was due in 3 minutes to see if it was required. I saw that it was expected at 13 minutes past, 6 minutes late, and decided that, instead of waiting, I'd go and get lunch. I decided to go for the Sainsbury's local on the station and get a meal deal. £3.70 later, I had a chicken triple sarnie, a Ribena, a bag of Kettle Chips and 5 custard donuts (which is where the extra 70p came from). I was on the travelator back to platforms 13 and 14 at 12 minutes past (it was a long queue at Sainsbury's) and saw that the diesel dez was already in. I had to run for it so couldn't get the number before boarding and found from the coach number that it was dud 185105, last had on the 28th of August 2012, so it was nice to get it again.

The Hazel Grove service was slightly late meaning that I could start eating my lunch before a dud, wedged, solo 150 rolled in. No thanks; I think I'll wait for the dez! Since I'd had all TPE dezes, I knew that this would be dud. I scored a new coach in 350407 whilst on the ride back to Piccadilly though.

It was now just before 12:30 and I needed to be on the 12:55 to Crewe (I know...) so I had 3 options for a fill in move to Stockport to pick the 12:55 up there (I'd decided that the Buxton service was too much of a risky connection at Stockport). They were the 12:38 to Alderley Edge, the 12:43 to Norwich and the 12:46 to Stoke. The Alderley Edge had a winner starship on but it was all shacks and there was a chance that the Norwich would overtake it en route so I could get two for the price of one. RTT was checked and it turns out that it would be a -2 at Stockport. Oh well!

A couple of moments after the Alderley Edge had left; the service that would form the 12:46 to Stoke arrived. I was happy to note that it was a winner so if the Norwich wasn't a double winner, then I'd go for that. The 158s only had one winner on and, since you can get those on Occy Road leaps, I went for the starship. Getting a seat in one of the motor coaches, I watched as a couple of normals, who I didn't hear speak any English, get on before getting off again, looking down the platform (there aren't any PIS machines up at this part of the platform) and then one of them put their hand in front of the closing door so it reopened before boarding. They did this twice before one of them got onl leaving the other on the platform as the doors shut and locked and winner 323235 whirred away towards Stockport.

I have to say that the best run of the day went to this starship on one heck of a loud, fast run. If fact we did the run 1-minute quicker than the Norwich 158s, which were leaving Stockport as we were arriving. It was a same platform +10 onto the Euston bound pendo, which was arriving at the same time as the Buxton service and happened to be my second favorite pendo, 390010. One of my winner coaches was sat in for the speedy run to Crewe, during which I checked RTT to see if I could do a Sandbach return before the 14:01 from Crewe. I could but it would be really tight at Crewe so I decided to only do it if the one out to Sandbach was a winner.

At Crewe, I actually scored two winners for sight, those being Gatwick Fakespress 387s 387223 and 387222 sat in platform 7. I saw that it was the best 323 on the Mancc service so I wasn't sure what to do. I decided to go for it but wanted a photo of the 387s so I ran over the footbridge and got a few.

During this, 66002 rolled in on platform 5.

I was about to head over to the starship but got stopped by an enthusiast who told me that there was '3 90s' (as it 3 skodas, not a few pendos) behind the read death so I waited and saw a skoda, a dyson and another skoda. After these passed, it was 36 minutes past and the starship was still there (it was due to leave at 34). I headed back over the footbridge and got on board 3232323232323232, which left 5 late. It was a speedy ride out to Sandbach, where I had just over 5 minutes to wait for the 13:51 to Crewe. It looks like I made a good choice at popping out to Sandbach because it was winner 323224 taking me back to Crewe.

Arrival at Crewe was at 13:58 and I noticed that the 14:01 to Euston was 6 late so I gave dad a ring, seeing 70004 come through on an intermodal while talking to him. Eventually, at 14:08, I saw the start of an 11 coach pendo arriving. Oh, you just have to appear don't you, you annoying thing! Why, oh why do you have to appear 390123? Another case of the 'you get it once then you keep on getting it' rule. At least it'll be cleared for 100 on the run to New Street!

After the trip, I realized that I'd had 390122, 390123 and 390124 that day and I'd only had 4 pendos! Like the previous time I was on this service, I went for coach U and easily found a bay of four without anyone else in. I didn't get wedged out and, at Wolverhampton, I called dad and heard that he'd been at Bromsgrove for work and was getting the 14:40 back to New Street, meaning that we'd be back at the bat cave at the same sort of time as me. We left Wolverhampton a few minutes late due to the foul XC UHT being late and let out in front of us. We got moving 5 minutes late and after the usual trundle through the midlands on 125mph capable stock, 123 was entering the New Street tunnels. As we exited them, I looked over and viewed a London Midland 170 arriving from the Uni direction and immediately knew that it was dad's one. We arranged to meet under the departure boards and, since I got there first, I had to choose which train to stand under (we did say under the boards!). I went for the Stanstead 170 and was stood there for less than 30 seconds before dad came. We said hi before walking up the hill towards his work.

Dad still needed to get some stuff done at work before he could head off and, since it was already 15:15 when we left the bat cave, we didn't think that there'd be time to go to our usual coffee shop before 'H62. We were right and dad didn't finish up until 15:40. It gave me a chance to start doing my numbers while waiting for him though, seeing that I'd scored a Metrolink tram for sight (3083). When dad came out, we headed straight to Moor Street, getting a caramel shortcake, a choccy brownie, a latté (for dad) and an oasis (for me). The cakes were cut in half on the rear coach of 'H62, us each having half of each. 68009 was powering us this eve' and, when Titan was thrashing away from Leam, a great day was over, with 19 winners, 12 of which were trams, I think it was a very successful day!
