Enjoy!

Lego witches, steady cooked pigs and Stalls next to walls. I must be in the midlands!

A rather weird title, I know. It is a slight (and pretty rubbish) clue as to where I went on the 16th of March. There is a few letters that don't have anything to do with the station names but the first sentence is actually 3 really, really awful clues about where I was. Can't work them out? All will be revealed in the report.

Morning (or afternoon, prevning, evening or night, depending on when you're reading this)! It's 05:30 (Alright then. I guess you know that I'm not doing the trip report at 05:30. Just add 2 months, 8 days and 6 hours and that's when I'm doing the report). Another day of heading in with dad for a midlands trip! I got ready to head out and we got out in good time for the 165. It was then into the car for the usual drive towards Leamington.

At Leam, we did the very familiar walk from where the car was parked to the station, where I got a return to Moor Street (or, as it says on the ticket, Birmingham stns. How do you even pronounce stns? How hard is it to put 'stations'?). We got onto the platform and, after a couple of minutes the 06:24 to Snow Hell was being announced. I got into position for the front set of doors and waited for the 165 to come around the corner from the grand bridge. I was very happy to ID the 165 as winner 165020 and we got into the usual bay of 2 for the run to Brum. As usual, the ride was uneventful and 68008 was the first loco viewed of the day while it was working 1H15. Since the cart was 3 late arriving at Snow Hell, getting there at 07:04, we decided to hang around to watch the 07:07 to Marylebone leave, as it was arriving when we left the cart. I was glad to see that we were late because it gave me a chance to say hi to Gingertom as it thrashed away through the tunnel to its next stop 0.75 miles away. We then exited the station and walked to the nearby Subway to get brekky - two mega melts as per usual - and then headed over to dad's work.

Breakfast was excellent as usual and we checked freightmaster to see if my last DBS 66 for sight was working the Dowlow to Walsall today, just like the last three days. 66200 had been constantly avoiding me for ages along with 66103, which had come into my view a month and ten days previously so both dad and I thought that it wouldn't stick on it four days running, especially since I was in a position to get it on this day. We were wrong! 66200 had worked it to Walsall and it was already there! This meant that I had until 12:45 to get out to Walsall. Score! After finding this out, dad and I got chatting to one of his colleges and he shown me some interesting stuff about his job and time just raced by. It was 08:35 when I looked at the clock after we'd finished chatting! Where's time gone?

I headed out of dad's work at just after 08:35 and got to New Street and bought my daytripper in time to view the 08:50 to Euston. It was a dud so I flagged it and waited to view other services. Dud, dud, dud, dud, dud. Brilliant. I'd been at New Street for just over half an hour by the time the slightly late 09:10 to Euston arrived. I didn't want to fester any longer and, even though it was a dud, I decided to go for it anyway. I thought that 390046 was a low mileage one but it turns out that it was the one that I'd had from New Street to Euston on the Inverness trip the year before! Oh well! It was a huge surprise to get a ticket check between New Street and International, especially as it was a decent enough speed all the way, taking 10 minutes. I was off at the first stop for this service and changed platforms ready for the next two services to the bat cave, one a dez and one a pendo. The dez was a dud so I decided to go for something I actually cared about mileage on and had a nicer ride on dud 390039 that I would've on a 350. After a speedy run back to New Street, I was off the pendo again and back onto a winner hunt.

This wasn't too successful and, after 20 minutes of waiting for a winner, I decided to flag it and made my way over to the platform that the 10:12 to Rugeley was due off from so I could get 66200 sooner rather than later. It rolled in from the Aston direction, with 170516 leading and a dud 153 on the back. I got a seat in the 170 because the service was supposedly 'formed of two coaches' and, after getting on board, the doors locked and the guard came over the PA to say that we were just uncoupling the rear unit and that the doors would be unlocked again in a minute. After about 5 minutes, the guard came over the PA again and said that they were having trouble uncoupling but hoped to be done soon. Then, about 10 minutes after the doors locked, they unlocked again and the rest of the passengers got on. The doors stayed unlocked for another 5 minutes and, at this point, a normal decided not to travel and got up to leave the train, getting to the doors just as they locked ! He wasn't too happy at that!

The reason the 12 minutes past to Rugeley (from the bat cave) go via Aston instead of Soho is because there is the 08 minutes past to Wolverhampton and then the 15 minutes past to Scotland which it'd get in the way of. Because of the delay though, this didn't matter so we were sent out via Soho towards Tame Bridge. I decided to formulate a plan for the next part of my day involving getting a few of my required shacks in the Walsall area. I decided to continue in 79516, a winner coach, until Walsall. I got ready to scribe at Bescot, seeing 66135 there. This was dad's last DBS 66 required for sight and one of my favorite ones. For the first reason, I was hoping that it was a good sign, even though 200 is my last UK based one and that 135 was dad's last DBS one including the exported ones. I had my eyes glued to the window after Bescot (not literally glued. That'd be A) difficult, B) dangerous and C) painful, not to mention D) useless). I then saw a DBS 66 and wagons in the yard so, with both fingers and toes crossed, I got the white, slightly faded number. It read 6... 6... 2... 0... 0! 66200 had finally appeared!

I was really glad at finally getting the damn thing for sight and even the fact that it would be double duds 153366 and 170507 taking me back one stop to Brum didn't lower my mood. I got a winner coach in the 170 on this run, back to Tame Bridge Parkway, seeing 66200 again en route. You see it once and then just keep on seeing it ;).

At Tame Bridge, I headed up to the booking office during my wait to ask if it'd be possible to have something to show me the walking route between the two Bloxwich stations. The ticket clerk didn't know it but he found a Birmingham A-Z and looked up Bloxwich, showing me the route in it. I looked at it for a good 15 seconds, memorizing the route, before thanking him and heading back to the Brum bound platform where I had a wait of a minute or two before the 11:07 to Wolves. This was 323204 and a new coach was scored on it with the short ride to Hamstead (or 'steady cooked pigs' as the title says), which was shack score 1. I had to change platforms pretty quickly here in order to get onto the Walsall (or 'walls next to stalls as it says in the title. Not a complete change but close enough) bound platform for the 11:14. Luckily I made this and got down onto the platform as dud 350244 was arriving. I got a bay of four on this lightly loaded service and stayed on it for the ride to its finishing point. A guy who got on the train at Tame Bridge without a ticket was issued with a penalty fare by one of the several RPIs on board and, after that procedure had finished, the dez was arriving at Walsall.

While changing platforms here, I noticed something that I hadn't any other time I'd changed platforms here. There was a large exit from the concourse of the station into a smallish shopping center and the first thing I spotted there was a non-busy Costa. It being too hard to resist the urge of a creamy cooler, I wandered over and got my BCCC, which was an absolutely brilliant one. I then took it over to the Rugeley bound platform for my train to Bloxwich (or lego witches) North. Dad had suggested getting a photo of a Belgian Chocolate Creamy Cooler to have as my forum avatar so, with one in my hand, I decided to get one. I headed to the bus shelter waiting room and put it on the bench to get a photo, which can obviously be seen on RailUK. I saw that my service was running 9 minutes late, meaning that I'd certainly be doing a risky move by walking between Bloxwich North and Bloxwich. I was texting with Tech at the time and asked if he though I should go for it or not. He didn't think it'd make but wasn't so sure so I decided while on board duds for the day 153366 and 170507 (this time in my last required coach on this one, making it a super dud). I continued to Bloxwich North as planned and, as we were only 8 late by here, I decided to try it. This gave me just over 10 minutes to get to Bloxwich before the 170 back towards Brum. The only way that I knew the route was by the Brum A-Z that I was shown at Tame Bridge so I was hoping that I'd memorized the route well enough when I went out of the station and began sprinting down the road towards Bloxwich. I kept on going all the way and eventually found myself at shack score number 3, Bloxwich, after about 10 minutes. I now had a headache though because it was a hot day but I luckily had a drink in my bag, which I downed before dud for the day 170516 arrived. I made this one a superdud on this run and it was heavily loaded, which surprised me (there were people standing upon departure from Bloxwich). I looked at RTT on this run to see what I could do next. A further plan was formulated and I got off this one at Tame Bridge, ready for my ride to shack score 4. I decided to go for a little bit more mileage before it so I decided to go to the now dud shack of Hamstead on dud 350234. I had to change platforms really quickly here in order to get onto my next dud dez (except the 165 this morning, I'm really not having a good day for required units), which was 350262. This would be the same one that I would've got from Tame Bridge so I got a new coach and a little extra mileage by going to Hamstead. 262 was taken to Bescot Stadium (shack 4), where I'd have a +15 while the dez got to Walsall and back. I had a nice time looking at 66135 but the noise from the M6 wasn't great. There were a few people at the end of the footbridge spotting stuff on the motorway and a few people at the end of the platform spotting the stuff in the depot so there was a good mix of people about between trains. It wasn't long before 350262 appeared again and I leapt on. I needed both Witton and Perry Barr as well but I was now getting hungry so I decided to take this one back to New Street and try to get Lea Hall later on instead of Witton and Perry Barr.

After a basic trip to the Bat Cave, I exited the station and headed for meal deal, getting my usual chicken and bacon baguette meal deal for £1.74. I then ran back to the station and down onto the platform that the 13:39 to Birmingham International was due out from, just getting onto 323221 before it headed off. That's right - I was going for Lea Hall. This should be a +0, which, if missed, would give me a half hour fester. As the connection was an ex Euston dez though, I was hoping that it'd be slightly late so I could make the connection. Lunch went down really well and I hadn't finished by the time the starship was arriving at shack score 5. I left the train here and changed platforms, getting onto the other platform a couple of moments before the 2 late dez rolled in. I was glad that the connection was made and that I just needed Adderley Park in order to clear the shacks between Wolverhampton and Berkswell but wasn't so glad that the dez was dud 350370.

I got back to New Street after a run on a pretty busy service but I didn't know what to do once I was there. A check of the departure boards showed that there weren't many of my winners in the area but that the 14:02 to Reddich was running 15 late and would be running fast to Longbridge. That was too good to resist so I headed over to 323219 and got a seat for the run. Just before we departed New Street it was announced that we'd be running fast to Longbridge so I got ready to enjoy some fast London Midland starship noise in one of the motor coaches. Sure enough, we sped thourhg Five Ways, University, Selly Oak, Bourneville, Kings Norton and Northfield before arriving at Longbridge. This was a winner shack but I decided that it'd be better to head out to Barnt Green for a shack score there before continuing towards New Street by linear scoring Longbridge because I had the time. I continued to Barnt Green, getting shack score 6 for the day, scoring a little winner track in the process because I need the Reddich branch. A change of platforms and I waited in the sunshine and leafy greenery for the next service heading towards Birmingham, which was 323205. I had a nice chat with the guard on this service while it was heading to Longbridge and I was soon bailing at my last shack score of the day, number 7. The service from Brum that'd form my one back hadn't yet arrived but it came in just after 205 had headed off and then crossed to the turnback siding before forming the 15:02. Someone asked me when the next train was as it was arriving so I just had to point at the approaching starship. This was 323240 and I got a bay of four for the run back to Brum, stopping everywhere instead of nowhere, which was a shame. All in all, an uneventful ride back to the bat cave.

I'd spoken to dad en route and he said that he'd only be able to get coffee and cake at Moor Street instead of at our usual coffee place so I knew that I had a little extra time after getting to New Street. I left the station and walked across to Moor Street, where I decided to do a Snow Hell leap and then walk over to dad's work so I could walk to Moor Street with him. I called him to confirm my plans and then leapt onto the 15:29 through the tunnel with 172342 providing traction. It got me a winner coach so it was certainly worth it. I then headed back over to dad's work and waited a few minutes for dad to come down before we walked back across to Moor Street together. A caramel shortcake and a chocolate brownie were got along with a coffee for dad and a summer fruits oasis for me before we went to board 1H62, with Titan powering us back today. The cakes were cut in half on board, us each getting half of one, half of the other. At 15:55, 68009 powered up and began to thrash us back home. Leam came way to soon and we let Titan thrash off towards Marylebone after a great day out. I got several new shacks, cleared my DBS 66s in the UK, scored one of my last few Chiltern 165s and, most importantly, I cleared my DBS 66s in the UK!

Certainly not a bad day overall there, despite lack of scores!

A BCCC sounds awesome right now too, mmm...

Well done on finishing your DBS 66s for sight, I think your Dad's last one is dud for haulage here!

Still can't believe you made that connection in Bloxwich, fair game to managing it! Another good read too :)

Well done on clearing your DB 66s for sight. I still need one, which has been hiding from me for the best part of 6 years! I did the walk between the two Bloxwich stations. Relatively easy as you found out. Quick question. Do you have a smart phone? Could you not have used google maps rather than trying to remember the way?

Clearing any selection of sheds is a big deal, there's blooming loads of them!

I'm surprised you still need shacks in the Midlands to be honest!

Agreed.

A BCCC sounds great right now as well... I might get one tomorrow though from London though to take on a train North from London. By 581 miles!

Thanks again!

Cheers! Which one do you need then? I don't have a smart phone, no. I just have a phone with a tiny screen that takes ages to load anything on the 'net.

Fully agree on both counts! I don't need many now though (Shack scoring wasn't really my thing until recently)

A very nice read there, Quinn. Giving me some ideas for a Midlands bash this summer.
Thanks! If I can be of any more assistance then let me know!

66114. I nearly had it last year when I was in Scotland as I knew it was about but I was never in the right place at the right time. It will fall eventually!

Shame you don't have a smart phone. Makes somethings so much easier!

Good luck on getting 114! I'm not keen on smartphones and much prefer my own.

Sent from 43251 and 43305 in 1st class on the 12:00 from Kings Cross to Inverness (which I'm taking all the way). Also thought that I'd say that my Northern 142s were cleared for sight at Darlington.

Couple of good reads there young Quinn, I agree with Kris, I too thought you'd have the majority of the midland shacks:o

Congrats on clearing the red sheds, I need 2 myself, 181 & 184, I believe ones stored at Toton, not sure which one and I've no idea where the one that isn't stored is residing:roll:

Jealous of the move on the cat, its been far too long since I had one for haulage, hopefully a trip to the Scottish Capital sometime soon will remedy that.

Will look.forward to the report on the Scottish trip, however I won't hold me breath;)

Hope there was enough emoji's for everyones likings.:lol::lol:

The shacks I now need in the WMDT area are now Earlswood, Tile Hill, Witton, Perry Barr and Blake Street.

Neither of your 66s are stored at Toton - 181 was at Tees Yard at 18:00, 184 being at Donny.

Hopefully you'll get a cat soon!

One was, hmm, so theres hope of that shed appearing on the Tees-Mossend modal then in the morning with a bit luck. May have to set the alarm and be out ready, with fingers crossed. Many thanks for that quinn.

I keep forgetting that it's in the zones because it isn't on the GB railrover map! I've been to the location that Coventry Area station is now but before the station was there.

Can't beat a Brucey Bonus every now and then.

Tonight near Holt Town, Etihad Campus and Velopark Metrolink, you can hear Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbot and The Stone Roses for free haha! :D

I thought PH & JA sounded incredible. ;)

Too many rails!

While out and about in the Midlands on the 16th of March, I'd been texting Tech throughout the day. He was planning to head out on Monday the 21st of March but he didn't know where to go so I said that I was heading to Liverpool to head to Granny's for a few days and asked if he wanted to join me. After a bit of thinking, he said yes, in the hope of getting his last 3 Merseyrail units and his last Merseyrail shack. I arranged to get the train an hour later from Crewe so I could travel to Liverpool with him from there. Finally, after a long waiting time, I was booking my tickets to travel on the Sunday eve and setting my alarm for 05:20 for the next day. I couldn't wait!

My alarm went off on time and I got up and ready for the day ahead. Dad got up a few minutes after I got onto the other boat and I put his coffee on and got that ready so we could set off at 05:50 in the car. It was getting lighter and lighter as the year got longer and it was certainly noticeable as we had the uneventful drive to Leamington. After leaving the car, we took the usual walk to the station. I headed to the TVM to pick up my tickets for the day, which I'd booked the night before so not to risk the ticket office being closed as none of my tickets could be bought from the Leam TVM. I couldn't get my Merseyrail saveaway online so I had to get that later on.

We wandered onto the platform and waited for the cart to Brum (on the 06:24). 66542 was the first loco sighted on the trip coming through Leam on a modal. I got in position to be the first on the unit so dad and I could get our usual seats on board. It was one of the 165s that I'd only had on a Solihull leap so the extra 23.25 miles on 165008 did it good. As hoped, I had put myself in a perfect position on the platform for the front set of doors of the 165s so I was first on board and easily secured our bay of two. Dad joined me and we were soon en route Snow Hell.

It was an uneventful journey towards Birmingham and the second loco sighting went to the best cat, Gingertom, on 1H15 to Marylebone. Doesn't the noise of a cat accelerating away from Moor Street in the morning get the blood running! Especially that cat... *daydreams about the noise from 68014*. It was certainly nothing like the noise from our 165 as it accelerated away from Moor Street into the tunnels, terminating at Snow Hell. Its name was certainly appropriate this morning; it was blinking freezing! It turns out that it was coldest on the platforms because it was sunny after we exited the station and walked over to Subway for the usual mega melts. It was then over to work for 45 minutes (or a much longer time for dad) to eat brekky and chat with dad for a bit before I headed off to New Street. The trams to New Street were getting on...

... Awfully (well, what do you expect? It's the Midland Metro!) but it was a nice enough walk to New Street for the 08:15 to Edinburgh. It was off platform 6 today so I headed down and had a little wait before I saw an 11 coach pendo snaking its way towards me. I got in position for coach B and saw that it'd be a winner coach in mega dud 390129 so got on board and found a seat. It was a fairly busy service but I could still get a bay of two to myself for the ride North. I let Tech know that I was en route before chilling out for the stagger through the Mids. A tram was spotted on 'V44 just before departure and we were soon crawling towards Wolves. Despite leaving New Street on time, we were 3 late leaving Wolverhampton but we then picked up speed and flew towards Stafford (no, not like the VT 'time flies' advert with the pendo in the clouds).

I managed to ID a GBRF 66 at Basford Hall (a dud one) and the usual shunters at Crewe LNWR. 47790 was sat just outside the station, alas not doing any work. My plan for the hour and 20 minute fester until Tech was due to arrive on his 175 from Hereford was to either go out to Sandbach and back on a starship (potentially giving me 2 winner 323s and a winner shack) or walk down to Gresty Bridge to see what was there. I was leaning towards Gresty Bridge and made up my mind when I saw that it was a dud (and pretty high mileage) starship on the move out to Sandbach. Gresty Bridge here I come!

I had no issue exiting the station at Crewe to begin the walk down Gresty lane towards the DRS depot. It's a fairly short walk and is pleasant enough, taking me just under 15 minutes to complete. As I walked under the Shrewsbury line, I heard a rumbling from over my head so I sprinted to the other side and was rewarded with winner for sight 68018 with 66429 as company on a light engine move. They were stopped on the bridge for quite a while, giving me time to get a few photos although they were all pretty rubbish (I was using the digi camera) and were more just to give proof that I'd seen it. I then walked for another 30 seconds up to the gate restricting access to the depot. 37605, 37603, 57003 and 57010 were immediately identified but however hard I tried, I couldn't get the cat that was coupled to 37605. Both can be seen in the photo below.

I also got a photo of 37603 and 57003 together, even though I hate bodysnatchers.

As I said, I spent ages trying to ID the 68 behind the cat because I knew that 68019 was at Gresty Bridge at the time (a winner for sight) but couldn't get the number. It was after about 5 minutes of looking that I remembered that Tech would be passing on his 175 so I text him to ask if he could get the cat that was coupled to 37605 as he passed. I then bade farewell to the tractors and cat, snarled at the bodysnatchers (poor 47317 and 47231) and began the walk back to the station.

The first thing I heard after going through the barriers at Crewe it the great noise of a cat idling away in the bay platforms so I headed over to it. It was 68004. I saw the driver was in the cab so decided to knock on the cab door and ask the driver if I could have a look in the cab. He was a very soche driver and let me in so I could 'cab' another cat. This means that I've had all of the cats from 008 to 015 except 13 and I've also had 006 and 004. The cabs of 68s are really funky and certainly look smarter than the shovels (although the cats are much newer)! I then got out and watched it roar away to Gresty Bridge before texting Tech to ask how far out he was. He said that he'd be here in a few minutes and I arranged to meet him on platform 6; the platform that his cart was due in on. After about 10 minutes of watching various trains pass, I saw the approaching 175. I met up with Tech a couple of moments later and, with 15 minutes until our pendo to Liverpool was due, we went up to the ticket office to try and get our Saveaways so we didn't have to bother with that at Lime Street. Unfortunately the ticket clerk didn't know how to issue one so we came away with nothing. The +15 at Crewe turned into a +30 due to a delay on the Liverpool service but we spent a while chatting and time raced past until 10:59, when dud 390134 rolled in. This was a very lightly loaded service and we took a bay of 4 in coach C. C1 and C2 weren't taken but when we tried to go for those ones, the guy at the buffet stopped us and said that they were reserved. We later found him and another VT member of staff sat in them! Hardly matters though, considering how many passengers were in coach C (very few).

I said hi to 47712, 47192 and 87035 as we passed the heritage centre and gained speed as we headed towards Weaver Junction. Part way though the journey, Tech went to get his ticket (I can't remember the reason why - there wasn't a ticket check on this service) but found that it wasn't there! After about a minute of frantic looking, he found it again so there was no need to worry in the end. It was an uneventful journey in the end after the ticket problem and we eventually arrived at Lime Street just under 10 minutes late. The ticket office was visited just after we got there and, with a virtually non-existent queue, we had our saveaways after only a minute or two. We then viewed the platforms to do an Edge Hill leap if any of our winners were on one due to leave shortly. I saw one of my required 158s on a Norwich but Liverpool South Parkway was too far away to bother with (because you can get them on Occy Road leaps) so, after I spotted a winner 319, we went over to that. This was a dud for Tech but a winner for me so we got some motor coach noise in 319383 through the tunnels to Edge Hill. There was only a dud 319 heading back towards Lime Street so we waited for one out to Wavertree, which would connect with the next one back from Edge Hill anyway. This was a dud for both of us, which was annoying, but we got some more motor noise on this one as well. 319363 took us out to what would be my first winner shack of the day, Wavertree Technology Park. We walked over the large footbridge here, noting that it's actually a staffed station (with a ticket office) and went down onto the other platform for our 319 back to Liverpool. Tech really wasn't having much luck with the 319 requirements today though because it was another dud for him on the service back from Wavertree. It was another winner for me though so I was happy enough with 319367.

Once back at Lime Street, I was in need of some lunch so we popped into Boots for a meal deal. I got a sarnie, pack of crisps and large bottle of water. It wouldn't all fit in my bag since I had all of my clothes for the next few days in there so Tech put the bottle of water in his bag. Thanks for that by the way! A Costa move was now required as we had time before Tech's first winner was due. He had gen on his required Miseryrail units and knew that two out of three were out and about. I was obviously going to get a BCCC at Costa, Tech obviously going for a coffee. I was going to get my one but Tech very kindly got my Creamy Cooler for me! Extremely soche!

It was then down onto the Merseyrail platforms where there was just over a 5-minute wait for what should be Tech's first winner. The West Kirby service was a dud for both of us so we waited for the Chester 5 minutes behind it, which, as expected, had one of Tech's requirements on, but not the one that he was expecting. This turns out to be because Tech misread the gen though, not because of a set swap. It was dud 508139 that took us one stop to Liverpool Central, where we decided to head to the Northern line platforms so Tech could get his last required Merseyrail shack, which was on the Southport branch. I was glad to hear that it was much closer to Liverpool than Southport as the slog out to Southport was no fun at all. The Kirkby unit was a dud for both of us so we just decided to wait for the Southport behind to take that to Tech's last shack. This was dud 507006 but I scored a new coach in it, this being my first trip on Merseyrail since I started coaches. It was only a few stops to Tech's last Merseyrail station, which was also a winner shack for me, Bootle Orial Road.

We didn't have too long to wait here (just over 5 minutes if I remember correctly) before the next Liverpool bound one so, after a short wait, we were on dud 507016. Would those 319s be my only winners of the day? Thankfully not, because, after we bailed at Sandhills, in rolled winner 508125 working a Kirkby service. I needed the Ormskirk branch so we decided to put that up next but it occurred to me that we could do what I gathered was an easy walk between Rice Lane and Walton, which would score me another two shacks. Tech thought that this would be a good idea so, after looking up the really easy route on Tech's phone, we decided to go for it. 125 was taken to shack score 3, Rice Lane, and we began the walk over to shack score 4, Walton, which was reached in less than 2 minutes. It was a short fester here before the Ormskirk unit arrived, this being dud 508124. We got on board and, en route, I noticed the blue 508, which I knew was a winner so I was hoping to fall into it later on. This unit was taken to the end of the line so I could claim another bit of track and shack 5 in the form of Ormskirk. I got a couple of photos here before we re-boarded a different coach for the ride back towards Liverpool.

We arranged a plan while on board and decided to get me another couple of shacks on the Ormskirk branch first. There was a good connection at Maghull (which is pronounced Magull) onto one back towards Ormskirk, which would give another decent connection at the next stop up the line for one back towards Liverpool. We decided to go for this and Maghull became shack score 6. An easy platform change here and, not long after we'd got off 124, winner 508111, the blue one that had been sighted earlier in the day, was arriving to take us to another of my required shacks on this line. This one was Town Green and, a couple of minutes later, we were leaving 111 and changing platforms at Town Green. A couple of minutes later, another one was arriving and I was happy to see that 507002 would be my 5th winner of the day. Just after the Southport line came into view en route Liverpool, we saw a pair of units heading away from Liverpool...

... One of them being one of Tech's winners! This meant that it was off diagram from the gen we had. It was also Tech's last Merseyrail unit for sight but he didn't remember that until I pointed it out to him a couple of minutes later. We left the ex Ormskirk at Sandhills, the hope being to chase 507017, the one we'd just missed, to Southport in order to get it in both of our books (it was a winner for me too) but a check of RTT said that I'd miss the train that I had to be on to Penyffordd if we did that. This was annoying but Tech could get 017 after I'd left so we decided to take the one behind to Central and attack the Wirral line, specifically the two Wallasey shacks. I was in luck again on the unit front, winner 507024 giving me 3 winners in a row. This was taken to Liverpool Central where we changed to the Wirral line as planned. Tech needed a coach on the first one that arrived, a Chester bound, so we took dud 508134 out to James Street for another winner for me, 507026, onwards on a New Brighton service. This service was running slightly late putting our connection at our stop at risk but luckily we made the connection at my next shack score, Wallasey Grove Road. This was another dud, 507005, and it was arriving at Grove Road just as we got onto the platform. I only had a few chains off this one (at the time. It is one of my highest mileage ones over all) because shack score 9, Wallasey Village, was very close by. It would be a 15-minute fester here is we waited for the next one heading towards Liverpool so, seeing a fill in move could be done, we changed platforms and waited for just over 5 minutes for dud 507019 back up to Wallasey Grove Road. As this one wasn't running late, it wasn't such a tight connection onto the one in the other direction so we were waiting for about a minute on the platform before fresh dud 507026 rolled in to take us away from Wallasey. I didn't have too long until my train to Penyffordd from Bidston now so we decided to stay in the area and took this one only to Birkenhead North, where a plan was formulated. Tech wanted to get back to Liverpool for 507017 but looking at RTT, we weren't sure if it actually came back out of Southport or not. We still went along with the plan that we currently had and took the next West Kirby bound one, dud 507013 past Bidston to shack score 10, Leasowe. Tech was considering coming back along the Borderlands line with me to Wrexham to have a change of route because we didn't know what would happen with 017. He was undecided when we boarded 508138 away from Leasowe. I needed to leave the 508 at Birkenhead Park in order to get back to Bidston in time so Tech had up to then to decide. He decided a couple of moments before the service arrived at Birkenhead Park. 507017 was chosen. I said bye and left the train, having had a wonderful time with Tech. It was a shame that he couldn't but 507017 was bagged in the end so it was a good decision. I was actually ticket checked while waiting for my next move at Birkenhead Park! This was highly unexpected but I produced my saveaway and they were fine with it. The New Brighton service was slightly late and, since both that and the West Kirby service stopped at Birkenhead Park, I decided to take that for a one stop run. This was dud for the day (twice!) 507026. I sat in my last required coach in this unit, moving it from required to super dud in a day! A few minutes later I was at Birkenhead North. After a very short fester here, the on time West Kirby service arrived with dud 508103. This would be my last Merseyrail unit of the day and it got me to Bidston OK. After watching it move off into the distance (the line is so straight after Bidston for a bit that from the platforms at Bidston, you can see Leasowe station), I heard a squealing from the branch line and an Arriva 150 appeared and rolled in. I was very happy to note that it was required 150262 that would be taking me to Penyffordd. A brilliant way to end the day!

A seat was found on board really easily and I was soon watching the scenery roll past as my 150 bounced along the jointed track. The guard announced that a vehicle had struck a bridge and that we may be held up en route. I was glad when he said where it had struck the bridge though because it wouldn't affect me. The bridge strike was at Penyffordd! At the bridge at the Wrexham side of the station! I was glad at this but it seems that it was good that Tech hadn't joined me as it would probably have delayed his journey onwards to Wrexham. It was a nice little run to Penyffordd and I alighted to see granny in the car park waiting to take me to her house. I went over and got in the car, saying hi to Granny as I got in. It looks like the bridge strike hadn't delayed the 150 as it was only waiting at Penyffordd for a minute and was gone by the time we left to Granny's house after a great day. Finally, thanks to Tech for helping to make it a great day!

Well done on cabbing the Cats! Not high on my agenda but would do mark off the locos I have cabbed. Sounded like a good day. I need to get back to Merseyland to get my last three 508s!

Thanks guys! I still haven't managed to get 68013 cabbed yet but it can't be long.

Just thought I'd say that I've got my second 7 day North East Rover in August, this time with Nathan. Really looking forward to it!

When are you up in the north east Quinn?

(I'm in Newcastle area from the 10/8 for a few days hitting shacks and trying to get my 156 requirements down)

I'll be heading up on the 13th of August but will just be going Leam-Moor Street-Leam on a cat-Moor Street on a cart and then from New Street on a tram to York for a cart to Malton. On the 14th I'll be at Granny's and Granddad's for the day so the rover will start on the 15th. If you fancy doing some VTEC tram bashing then I'll be completely happy!

Ouch... I don't think I'll be able to join you at Malton unfortunately as I've promised to spend the day with Granny and Granddad on the Sunday.
