<can of worms.> Locos are always preferable to HSTs in my book </can of worms.>
;)

55013 I think we're just old school, back in the day I'd have rather taken a peak:o:o:oops::oops: than a zing/tram. Nowadays I try to avoid the 91's for a tram. I've somehow found a begrudging respect for the HST, something I would NEVER EVER dreamed of saying in the mid 80's early 90's.

Oh aye, I've come to appreciate them as well.
They certainly knock Voyagers into a cocked hat.

They got much better once someone decided to get rid of that ear splitting screech.
I'd still rather have a 91, though :)

I'd rather have that scream back personally, but that's because screaming HSTs, also rather claggy ones, were what got me into the hobby!

EMT are definitely the best for sound out of them all. Shame they had to re-engine all the others to something completely different.

I was along the GWML earlier this evening where Voyagers share the fasts with HSTs. You could hear the HSTs coming roaring pass whereas the Voyagers only made a smaller roar.

Stand at Cholsey and just listen to the roars, but be careful when a Voyager is put onto the reliefs as the platforms are not the widest

I will have another rover coming up soon (a 3 day Severn and Solent) but I am not sure when yet. My next planned trip is on a week Friday where I will be heading up to Penyffordd via Shrewsbury (with mum), then I will be out on the bash for Saturday, aiming to just bash 67014 all day (PNF-SHT-LLF-CTR-BNG-CRE-ALD-CRE-LLD-SHT-PNF). And while I think of it, how do you pronounce Llanfairfechan? I think it is Clan-fair-fetch-en but I am not sure.

Cheers!

I always thought it was Clan-vire-vecan, but could be wrong though!

I'm not sure. It was a random guess based on the name.

I will probably just spell it out/show the guard the name in my plans on the day. Tickets won't be an issue as I will be on a North Wales Rover.

It is difficult to describe how to pronounce the "ll" bit as the sound is produced by a combination of tongue and teeth manipulation. The nearest in English would possibly be "THL". The whole pronunciation would then be:-

Thlan-via-vechan

Don't family in Penyffordd know ?

June big bash day 2: An (anywhere but) Cheshire, day ranger

The Saturday of the trip began at about 07:15 with a hot buttered bagel at Granny's house. I had decided to do a Cheshire Day Ranger today and had made a plan getting in the line from Lime Street to Victoria on a 185, a 175 from Stockport to Crewe, a 150 to Chester and the Miseryrail network back up to Liverpool. But where is the fun of being stuck to a plan when winners are elsewhere? Read on to find out what I did.

Granny kindly dropped me off at Penyffordd station for my chosen train, the 08:49 to Bidston. Just after I got out of the car at the station, 66199 raced through on 6V75 (from Dee Marsh to Margam), which was running nearly an hour and 15 minutes early (due to pathing being easy all the way to Margam). I had got to the station 10 minutes before my train was due to make sure I was there in time for it (you never know how the traffic will be) and it wasn't long until I was boarding dud 150229. This unit was last had back in 2013 on my first trip to the Borderlands line. The journey back then was also from Penyffordd to Bidston. On the way to the Merseyrail line, I noticed that the unit heading towards Wrexham was a winner. A possible winner for my journey back then. Or I just get 229 for the second time (which knowing my luck with 150s it will be). Other than that, the journey was uneventful and 20 miles/45 minutes later I was alighting at Bidston ready for the 09:36 towards central Liverpool.

I didn't need to get my Cheshire Day Ranger from the (annoying) booking office at Bidston as the guard on the 150 knew how to issue one so with all of my tickets for the day bought I stood near the end of the platform watching a magpie trespass on the railway. My train arrived on time with dud 508143 providing the power. The only seats available were next to people so I opted to stand for the 10-minute journey to my first winner shack of the day, Hamilton Square. The reason I had never baled at Hamilton Square before today is because I had only been to Liverpool once while it was open (as the station had been closed for ages as they wanted to improve it; I wander if it was anything like Moorfields) and that was back in 2013, the same time I first had 150229.

Hamilton Square is a 3 platform underground station with 1 platform used for trains going to West Kirby and New Brighton, another platform for trains going to Chester and Ellesmere Port and the 3rd platform for all trains going around the Liverpool loop (from all destinations). I stayed on the same platform that my train had arrived on and 5 minutes later my onward train to Lime Street was arriving with another dud, 508126. I took it most of the way around the loop, noting that Moorfields was closed for refurbishment works. It looked nicer then than it ever had!

After arriving at my destination, I headed up the thousand escalators to the barriers where I had to get my Cheshire Day Ranger out of my bag in order to get through them. I then ran the last bit to the final escalator before stepping onto the concourse of Liverpool Lime Street. I made sure I didn't stay at the top of the escalator after getting off as the constant announcements of the escalator safety and things is enough to drive even the sanest person mad. They are the Red Dwarf squeaky pipes of Liverpool; no one wants to be near them. In my opinion, Merseyrail should just have signs saying it. Anyway, that mini rant is now over.

After getting away from the Miseryrail part of the station, I headed over to the lower numbered platforms, where I knew my TPE service to Man Vic would depart from. As soon as I saw a diesel-dez sat in platform 2, I knew that it would be my train to Manchester and after a quick look at the departure board to confirm, I headed to the front coach of winner 185127 to get a table to myself, away from all the normals (who did the usual normal thing; pile in the first coach available).

We set off bang on time at 10:12, passing lots of Northern 319s and 142s on the way. The Newcastle trains run non-stop between Liverpool and Mancc so I only got a brief glimpse of the stations on the route (they were all pretty small) and half an hour later I was alighting at one of the British stations that Vampires are attracted to, Manchester Victoria. Well, only the platforms now. The moment I stepped off my train I noticed a major change at the station. It had a brilliant glass roof and new, funky barriers, which actually accepted my Cheshire Day Ranger. I stood in awe at the new concourse for a moment before snapping out of it and heading over to the Metrolink where I got myself a ticket to go across to Piccadilly and 2 minutes later a double tram set was arriving with dud 3059 leading winner 3056. I jumped on for the short ride down the street to St Peters Square where I got off to wait for the next one towards Piccadilly. I didn't have long to wait at all before another tram came in, this time just a single set with winner 3021. When it arrived at Piccadilly Gardens, I noticed that another winner was right behind it so I jumped off and waited for one minute for the next one. This was my second dud tram of the day, 3070. I took this to its terminating point and about 3 minutes after boarding the tram at Piccadilly Gardens; I was stood on the Concourse of Manchester Piccadilly ready to see what was heading towards Stockport before the train that my plan had me on as far as Crewe.

The Cleethorpes train was a dud 185 (and it would be heaving upon departure), the Chester train was a 142 and a dud Pendo was on the Euston bound so I decided to just head over to the platform for the 175 I was going to take to Crewe in order to get a seat on that. Success! Heavy rail winner number 2 of the day, 175108 (Nathan's last 175 for sight when he needed them) was sat in platform 8 ready to work my service away. I happily boarded it and found a seat very easily for the 40-minute journey to the WCML.

Departure from Piccadilly was 1 late but by Stockport we had lost more time and it left 6 late. I had a +12 at Crewe onto a 150 to Chester so I was starting to wander if I would make the connection, but it arrived at Crewe 4 minutes late in the end. Easy to make if I wanted too. But I didn't as I heard someone on my 175 saying to his mate that the Chester races were on that day. When the Chester Races are on, it is best to avoid any train calling there so instead of getting on a double ATW 150 (one of them was a winner), I got on winner 390008 which was on the slightly late 12:09 to Glasgow. I sat in coach G, which was declassified and, luckily for me, most of the normals didn't listen to the announcement saying that it wasn't first class and stood in a cramped Standard Class vestibule while I was sat in a comfy first class seat on the right hand side.

Warrington was the only place that my ranger was valid too so I had to get off there. I had no idea of any onward connections so I just decided to take what shows up so just after getting off the Pendo at the winner shack, I began walking over to the timetables to see when trains were due but before getting to them, I saw a 175 pulling in on a late running Llandudno train. I headed over to the platform for it and saw that it was a winner. But that wasn't the only thing I saw. It was also absolutely heaving and not all of the passengers wanting to board it could. I walked away and this time actually made it to the timetables to see when anything heading away from Chester was due. There was a Northern service due in about 15 minutes so I could take that to Earlestown if it wasn't a 142.

I stood on the platform it was due to leave from, going via the buffet to grab a drink and it wasn't too long before it terminated about 10 minutes late with winner 150220 on. I leaped aboard, getting myself a good seat and about 5 minutes later it was racing down the WCML towards Earlestown.

Once my train pulled to a stand at the winner shack, I got off and walked over to the timetables as, like Warrington, I didn't know when any onward trains were (preferably to Manchester). It was then I found out that the Liverpool to Manchester Airport 319 doesn't stop and that it would be a wait of about an hour for the Manchester Victoria stopper. But it was only 20-25 minutes until the ATW to Mancc was due so I just did a bit of spotting (pretty fun to try and get the numbers of things on every side of the triangle). It didn't feel like a very long time before my onward train rolled in with dud 175115.

I had decided to take this to either Oxford Road or Piccadilly but as the 175 arrived at Newton-le-Willows, I noticed that there was a Manchester Airport bound 319 due in less than 5 minutes so I jumped off at winner shack number 4 for the day.

My first Northern EMU for haulage arrived on time and, after getting a few interior pictures, I grabbed myself a right hand side seat on a pretty empty winner 319365. It was the best run I had ever had on a 319 but that is because the Thameslink ones are pretty horrid on the inside. I guess I will get a few more of them with the London Midland ones coming. It felt like a fairly long ride to Manchester Oxford Road where I baled. It was a 10 minute wait until the Scarborough bound Diesel Dez arrived to take me the last 0.5 miles to Piccadilly with winner 185129 providing the power. After getting off, I headed to the other side of the island platform and waited for a few minutes before the Edinburgh bound dez arrived, this time a leccy one with winner 350404! 1 down, 3 to go for the TPE 350s. I did the usual run over the bridge, ready for the ex Glasgow back which was dud 350406. After getting back to Piccadilly, I ran over to the Metrolink platforms to get another return tram trip in to Piccadilly Gardens because I saw a Burger Ching there on the tram earlier in the day. There was a tram about to leave when I got down there so I leaped on in and found out that I was on a winner, 3050. I got off at the first stop and immediately walked over to the Burger Ching to grab myself a small meal for lunch which I then began eating it on both winner 3057 and finishing it in the waiting room on platforms 13/14 at Piccadilly waiting for my train out to Oxford Road to arrive with winner 150228 out and winner 185116 back. I then copied the move I had done an hour earlier, this time with dud for the day 350406 out and then waiting for about 5 minutes for my train back which I was happy to see was formed of a double set, and even happier to see that it was dud 350407 leading winner 350410! Just 350401 and 403 to clear the TPE 350s with only 2 trips to Mancc before this. Soon I will have my last 2 (which I also need for sight).

I had made a plan earlier in the day to get back over to Lime Street in time for the train that would get me to Bidston for the 17:32 to Penyffordd so I had to say bye to Manchester for the trip and board dud 158773 leading winner 158785 on the 15:37 for the dull trip back over to Liverpool, seeing a GBRF 66 at Trafford Park and several 319s at Allerton before arriving at Lime Street bang on time.

I then headed down to the Miseryrail platform ready to get a few 507 and 508s. I was very happy when the first train that appeared was a winner 507, 507016. I took this for the 1 station hop to Liverpool Central before taking dud 507012 onwards to James Street for another winner, this time 507003 to Hamilton Square, where I changed platforms, waiting for the New Brighton train. This was another dud, 507009 which I took to Birkenhead North for a shack scratch before finishing my linier bashing with dud 507028 for the short hop to Bidston.

The plan was to wait for a few minutes for the 17:32 back to Granny's but by 35 minutes past it still hadn't appeared. I walked to the waiting room to take a look at the departure board and found that it isn't 17:32 like the trains during the day. This one is 17:45. So after a call to Granny saying that I would be about 15 minutes later than planned, I boarded dud for the day 150229 (why can't it be the winner!). The slow southbound journey was pleasant enough and 45 minutes later it was arriving back at Penyffordd, where I walked through the gate to the car park and got in Granny's car for the journey back to the house.

Quite an excellent day had there, tons of winners had all in. Why didn't you do the Burger King at Piccadilly? It would have saved the hassle of going to Piccadilly Gardens!

You've done well with the 350s, I need just 3 of them myself (but only one was scored via the Oxford Road to Piccadilly leap!) which I'm hoping to bump into next time I do Manchester.

That said next time I do Manchester I'll also be doing some serious Metrolink bashing too...

Agreed. The Burger King at Piccadilly had a huge queue and it would have been more expensive due to it being on the station. That and it would get me another couple of trams in.

Which 3 350s do you need?

The metrolink is definitely fun but it is a shame the platforms are so high.

I can't see how the high platforms create an issue?

350403/404/409 for me.
It just doesn't feel so much like a tram network. I like it when the platform is just a little ramp (like the NET) because it feels more like you are just running down the road and stopping off at random areas on the pavement.

403 also sticks away from me.

Here is part 3.

June big bash day 3: Home via... Where?

After spending time with Granny, Gramps and my uncle on the Sunday I was ready to get back out on the rails again, even if this day was the end of my 3-day bash. By Monday morning, I had no idea how I would get home but I knew I had to be at Moor Street in time for the 15:55 back to Leamington. I could go for Liverpool (as usual) or I could do what I did for my bash at the end of January and get a Cheshire Day Ranger to do a bit of spinning around Mancc. Hmmm. What shall I go for?

By 07:15 on the Monday morning, I was packing my bag again. On the Friday I had decided to take 2 bags, a big purple one and my usual green camo bag, putting all of my clothes in the purple bag with my day bag in there too for the journey up and back and just having the green bag for the Cheshire day ranger in between. That didn't take too long and by about half 7 I was down-stairs getting breccie. I went on the I-pad, which Granny had let me use while I was up there, to decide if it would be better to go for Liverpool or Manchester timing wise and after about 5 minutes on Real Time Trains, I had reached a decision which involved the 08:49 from Penyffordd, the same train I had got on the Saturday. An hour and 10 minutes later, I was at the station waiting for my 150 to Bidston.

Dud 150252 was in charge of my train to Merseyside and it wasn't too long (well it was compared to what I am used to on 168s/68s to Brum) before I was at the island platform of Bidston, watching 150252 head back to Wrexham. I had my tickets ready to get me to Crewe, where I would buy a WMDR to get me home. Dud 508143 arrived on-time. Keen readers may notice that this is the same 508 that I had on this same service 2 days before. Why, I don't know. The only real difference was that it wasn't so busy so I managed to get a right hand side seat, shifting over to the left side to get a view of the units in Birkenhead North depot.

It would be a 10 minute wait for the ex New Brighton train at Conway Park, my last required shack between Liverpool and Bidston, so, copying the move I had done a couple of days before, I baled at Hamilton Square and waited for the ex Chester train which arrived promptly with yet another dud, 508138. I took this most of the way around the loop, alighting at Lime Street, ready for some more non Merseyrail action (hopefully including a few winners). After getting onto the station I headed over to the lower numbered platforms and had the misfortune of hearing a 142 arrive, sounding kind of like any song by Kylie Minouge: foul sounding, screechy, ear killing rubbish. In order to get away from the horrid unit and the thousand people piling off it, I ran over to the winner on platform 6 and leaped on getting a seat in the front coach for my onward journey with 185140. It left bang on time at 10:12 and after 35 minutes on it I was getting off at Manchester Victoria.

Manchester would have beat Liverpool on winners, fun and getting back to Brum around 15:45 so there was no contest. I headed over to the Metrolink platforms to grab the same ticket I had on the Saturday and get a few pictures of the new station before catching my tram across the city. Or so I thought. The first thing I noticed about the Metrolink set heading towards St Peters Square is that it was a pair of dud trams. I walked over to the door of the front unit but before getting on; saw a set with double winners on it heading in the other direction. Dibs! I quickly changed direction and headed over to 3012 leading 3022 for the winner track to an unknown stop.

First thing. I was surprised at how long it was until the tram was arriving at the first stop on its way to Rochdale. I noticed that it was something like 8 minutes until the next tram towards the city center so I continued a little further on this pair and got off at Central Park (obviously a winner tram stop). Central Park is a station with a foot crossing at the Victoria end of the platform and a big bridge at the other side, which I watched my pair of trams come over on their way towards Mancc. This pair was another double winner set with 3001 and 3043 providing the power for my journey to St Peters Square where I got off and took another winner to Piccadilly Gardens, this time a single set with 3054. I got off at Piccadilly Gardens because I noticed that there was another tram right behind us, and by right behind us I mean that we were both occupying the platform at the same time. I hopped off the tram I had got on less than 2 minutes ago and walked to the other end of the platform to board winner 3041. After 3054 had departed, the tram I was on rolled forward to the other end of the platform and unlocked the doors again. If my rule was that I had to travel at least 10 chains or 1 station if that was less than 10, I couldn't just get off here and wait for the next one so I stayed on for the very short ride to Piccadilly.

It was now about 11:27 so when I got up to the concourse I immediately ran over to the 175 on the 11:30 to check if it was required and sure enough it was so I leaped aboard 175003 just before the doors closed and took it to Stockport where I tried to make a very tight connection onto a 323 heading back to Piccadilly but missed it due to the stupid ticket checks. No winner starship for me then :(.

The next train heading back to Piccadilly was a Northern 150 which was also needed so I boarded 150277 for the run to Oxford Road, stopping everywhere on the way. I couldn't get a seat on it until Piccadilly there wasn't really any point as I would only be on it for another couple of minutes.

After getting to my destination, I headed over to the other platform for the Scarborough bound 185 which had winner 185122 on. Doing my usual move when I end up on the Scarborough bound diesel dez, I got off at Piccadilly and boarded the double 350 heading back over towards Oxford Road. This pair was dud 350405 leading equally dud 350404, 404 being one of the 4 that I had got on Saturday. It was when I got to Oxford Road that the problems occurred. First I noticed that the 350 heading to Manchester Airport was just 'delayed' along with everything else heading off the Chat Moss line or coming from Bolton. 10 minutes later I realized that nothing was leaving Oxford Road either. This was the second time I had been caught up in problems at MCO, the first time being when I was in Mancc with Nathan. And just like the time before, a pair of EMT 158s came to the rescue on the 14:39 to Norwich. Unlike the pair before, this one was double winners, with 158852 and 158810.

I needed to be on the 13:30 from Piccadilly to Crewe and since I didn't want to risk another Oxford Road leap, I just did a bit of spotting for 20 minutes before taking a look at what was on the 15 minutes past to Euston, 17 minutes past to Chester and 20 minutes past to Cleethorpes. That was where I had another problem. The 185 was a boring dud one but the Chester had a winner 150 on it and the Euston a winner Pendo on it. And I had no idea which one I wanted more. I gave dad a ring to see what he thought and then decided on the 150 as I am more likely to get 390107 again than 150205. I got a good seat on board and 20 minutes later I was alighting at Stockport for (hopefully) a short wait until the Tenby train arrives.

I had a plus 13 at Crewe onto my train back to Brum (I had to buy my ticket to get me back home in that time too), which wasn't aided by winner 175104 being 5 late from Stockport but thankfully it made up time instead of losing it and I was at Crewe station 3 minutes later than planned after a rather uneventful journey.

I headed upstairs to get a West Mids Day Ranger and I was back on the platform about 5 mins before my dez arrived. I was hoping for a 350/1 or a 350/3 so I wasn't very happy when dud 350244 (KMN) arrived for my hour long southbound trip. Easy to say that it was a very boring journey and I was very glad when the auto announcer was saying that we were approaching the bat cave. If put in the same situation now, I would have baled at Wolverhampton for something else to either Smethwick or New Street as I had plenty of time to get over to Moor Street. So much that I also had time to do a Snow Hell leap with dud 172343 out for another dud, 172338 back.

I had arrived back at 39 minutes past, just enough time to go to the Centenary Lounge to grab dad a large latte, get a few photos of the Cat ready to take us home on the 15:55 and meet him on the other side of the barriers. We then walked past the Cat at the blocks, winner 68014, the best of the bunch, and get a brilliant table seat for the 22.75 mile journey home with some excellent thrash. It was definitely a very nice trip with a lot of different classes and given the chance, I would certainly repeat this trip another time. My next planned bash was one on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for the diesel gala. That report is a completely different one and will be along soon (I hope).

Nice move there.
Victoria looks to have changed a lot since I was last there less than three months ago!

Quite the change there at Victoria, I'm looking forward to the works being completed!

A rather decent day all in, certainly you'll have had more fun in Manchester than Liverpool!

Jealous, I am suffering Cat haulage withdrawal symptoms! Worse is that I have no idea when I'll get a chance to rectify that!

The sound has got better as the drivers have got better. My mileage is over 1150, my highest being 68011 at 255.25, lowest is 68008 at 72.75.

Good to hear the noise has got better, which is saying something considering they sounded good before!

My lowest is 68010 and 68013, both 6m31c (or whatever exactly Moor Street to Solihull is)

You definitely need to do a WMDT again, this time with the extension to Leamington. They are definitely monstrous locos to have as my local stuff.

I got back from my day out about an hour ago. Some brilliant thrash was had from Thomas Telford on the extras!
