I can only agree with Chaz. I wouldn't be learning to drive if I could avoid it (it is a useful skill to have) and I do not plan to drive often once I qualify. Fuel alone is simply not worth it; never mind insurance for a young male driver...

Insurance is a complete joke, mine is into 4 figures. Admittedly my car is slightly bigger than the average new driver (it's still only a 1.4 engine though!) and I have a second driver too, but still...

hock: I aim to only drive small cars; TBH in Glasgow you never need a car unless you're doing an awkward journey like Coatbridge-Hamilton (where the train via Glasgow is both cheaper and quicker that the bus, and it's still over one hour! Car journey time: 20 mins max). That said, won't be long 'till I'm driving a big BMW automatic that gets 3 miles to the gallon probably...

In all seriousness, I don't really enjoy driving all that much and I'd prefer to take the train anyway

Town driving is always a bit of a nightmare, driving out of town is much better. Saying that, I do prefer to take the train when possible too.

Thats nonsence

Cars, Vans and Lorries etc dont pay Road Tax as such.
They pay Vehicle excise duty which isnt directly for spending on roads.

And Vehicle Excise Duty is a fancy name for road tax

Also, just to point out, vans, lorries and coaches have to pay twice to use the roads, as they have to be on an O-license

I really do wander how much it would cost per litre if the Government did away with Vehicle Excise Duty (Road Tax).

It would be a much fairer system of taxation as the fuel you'd use would be directly related to the amount of mileage you do, and a big plus is that all foreign vehicles would pay it too

So you also want any vehicle built before 1972 or any vehicle that emits less than 101g/km CO2 emission be banned from the roads too? Also pedestrians will also have to be banned.

Personally, I'd rather see people with an IQ less than 90 banned from the roads...

Damon, glad to see you are ok. Havent been on for ages so hadnt seen this thread. I hear what you are saying regarding most car drivers, they are utter ****s. When I'm on my bike I always treat every other road users as someone who's trying to kill me, 9 times out of 10 I'm not far off. I've been knocked off a few times & rammed a few cars that pulled out in front of me, all on the old Notwork Fail bike thankfully & not my own baby.

I think that everyone should have to ride bikes before they could ever drive a car. Off on a tangent here, but one of my hobbies was shooting. Years ago I used to have a Colt M1911A1 .45 & a Beretta 92F 9mm handguns & a factory matched Colt AR15 (M16) cyclic burst capable. The handguns were banned a few years ago & I had to hand in my well loved weapons (So the goverment could claim to dispose of them but they probably ended up in some 16yr old london "gangsters" hands instead.) So we have gun laws here in sh*tty UK, but just check how many people get killed by guns here before the ban & then compare that to how many bikers get killed by cars, then also look at how many people die on the roads in general every year...........Cars are the biggest killers out there.

Anyway enough of all that.

Cyclists - start obeying the Highway code and you may get a little more respect from car drivers..

Yes, those red traffic lights apply to YOU as well. You actually do have to stop at them.

Turning yourself into a pedestrian to avoid stopping at a red light might get you out of the way of car drivers, but then you will start to p!$$ off pedestrians instead. Nobody likes having to dive into a privet hedge to avoid some little oik cycling at high speed with no hands listening to his mp3 player.

Don't moan when you overtake car drivers on the NEARSIDE and they don't see you - car drivers are used to being overtaken on the OFFSIDE as the Highway Code specifies, and are not looking for you there.

A cycle does not cause much wear and tear to the road, no, but whose tax pays for painting and signing all those cycle lanes? Not yours is it?

All cyclists should be licenced and insured. Police should have powers to revoke the licences of cyclists just as they have the power to ban motorists who are unsafe from driving.
