Forum newspaper readership

Prompted by a question in the bus section of the forum, I wondered which daily newspaper people read. (If you don't read one daily, choose the one which you would most often)

Neither do I - not even if they are handed out free e.g. at airports, hotels, 1st class in trains etc.

Haven't read a paper for over 30 years. Who wants to hear yesterdays news? That and the fact that daily papers have political bias in whatever way shape or form.

BBC/Sky/ITV News, plus forums like this for things I'm particularly interested in. It's interesting to note how often what the mainstream media say differs to what you read from people who have an in-depth knowledge and understanding.

I used to love the Times, but just couldn't justify the last price rise to £1:60. I've always believed in paying for news because journalists need to eat, however there is a limit to what is reasonable for a daily.

I don't read print papers.

I get some weekly/fortnightly magazine.
Sometimes flick through metro/standard online.
Majority is read online from a range of newspaper sites and other sources. It's better for a broad variety of perspectives and levels of depth.

What happened to the Financial Times - one I read most often - pre-children we each used to buy a daily paper and 2 on Sundays - post children rarely buy a paper. FT is read on the few times I now travel first class on Virgin for work. Last paper I brought was last Sunday's Washington Post for a flight back to the UK.

I do have a subscription to the Economist which as it states is classified as a newspaper rather than a magazine.

Interesting that out of eight responders so far, seven have replied "completely not", re print newspapers; and for the eighth, it's been "only a little". I'm another who effectively never looks at a print newspaper. In my case, I deliberately avoid news and current affairs as much as possible: in the interests of trying to stay sane and to reduce the likelihood of my committing suicide -- I reckon that anything greatly momentous happening, will percolate through to me one way or another. (On first sight of the title of another thread on this sub-forum, "Who poisoned the Skripals?", my initial thought was, "what the hell are Skripals? -- they sound like some sort of animals invented by Edward Lear". Then I remembered the stuff in the news, some way back...)

Same here, which is why I voted i, but only if it's a massive story that I want some more insight into.

How interesting. I prompted this poll with a reference to Owen Jones in the Guardian. However, in fact, I too don't take any London newspapers and never have done. I no longer take paid for editions of the M'cr Evening News - its free in the city centre on Thursdays & Fridays. I don't have Sky or other such TV stations, haven't listened to the radio in decades* and don't normally watch the "National" News on BBC/ITV. I watch local news on BBC/ITV but find the former far more prejudiced than the latter. I occasionally look at the MEN website, but it is appallingly laid out with the screen jumping up and down more than Vinnie Kompany in the United penalty box, and stories repeated and re-arranged endlessly. Many stories are blocked by consumer (NOT political) surveys, and since it was taken over by The Mirror Group it has been inundated with items from the Liverpool Echo and links to local papers in Cambridgeshire and Essex. So all in all, its a load of garbage.

I never got over not being able to take up my 'apprenticeship'. as a cub reporter due to contracting glandular fever immediately after my A levels, so I still lap up newspapers, and would (and have) spent my last shilling on a newspaper, though I recognise the era of the newspaper is probably drawing to a close which imo has helped lead to the rise of Trump and other populists. I still read newspapers every day of my life.

I didn't mention it before as its not a daily newspaper as in the poll but I do subscribe to Private Eye, the investigative/satirical fortnightly publication.

If faced with the choice, I would give-up my television before my daily newspaper... but only when the World Cup is over, please.

I'm 100% a 'print' man - tried the newspaper on tablet, but I didn't like it. Plus, you can scrunch newspapers into bags care-free, sit on them accidentally, or forgetfully leave them on trains without worry - which can't be said for an iPad.

You save about a third by subscribing, but then face the usual hazard of 'direct debit lethargy' where the price increases slip through unnoticed unless you're efficient at personal administration, which I admit I'm not.

For a long time, I enjoyed Private Eye -- particularly relished its gleeful "puncturing" of the pretensions of assorted highly placed, highly-up-themselves, prominent folk; but quite some years ago, found it to be for my tastes: becoming as nastily and indiscriminately misanthropic, as the hate-and-scorn tabloids which it pilloried for exactly the same traits. There's enough in the world tempting me to top myself, without need of piling-on of same: I thus renounced the "Eye".

Yes, I did consider it - I even bought a (rubbish) printer to print the tokens.

I think it was a lack of spontanaety, as well as the fact that after the rail forum, I don't have enough time to give a paper justice on my commute.

I read the free local weekly (St. Helens Star) - if/when it gets delivered. I also have a quick look through Metro if there is a copy on the local bus to town. But it is about 40 years since I bought a national paper - I got fed up with reading about "how good" waas Thatcher., and decided there were more interesting things to read.

The tabloids are mostly full of trivial rubbish about nonentities who like to think they are important.

Snap - except I do pick up a free copy of the Metro for something to read on a rail journey too!

Newspapers are simply blogs that happen to be also available on paper. So I don't see why they should get free advertising on the BBC and other TV and radio stations.

However, in fact, I too don't take any London newspapers and never have done.

I'm guessing by "London newspapers" you mean national newspapers that are based in London. That may not be obvious to other forum members.

Usually grab the Metro in the morning, if for nothing else in the hope that it wakes me up a bit. I would never contemplate buying a newspaper though, regardless of length of trip, cover story etc.
