But it's still misleading, if Man City had a fire sale they'd re-coup a huge amount of money from what they have spent.

Silva, Yaya, Aguero, Dzeko would bring millions and millions in if they were sold. Man Utd have still spent loads of money, they broke the transfer record about 5 times over the years.

It's easy to critisise Man City and Chelsea for their spending but ultimatley Man Utd have been just as bad. What's worse is Man Utd's milking of the Munich tradegy. No longer is it time to remember the dead it's now a time for the club to cash in both in sympathy terms and money. Remember those one off shirts they brought in for the City game a few years ago, they ended up flogging them in the club shop for £50 a time. They even had a sponsor on the "Munich 58" banner outside the stadium, it's just sick.

Incredible. Rangers, officially the world's most successful club at domestic level, really in serious trouble...?

Without them, Celtic would surely join the English League - and the SPL would become a true Mickey Mouse league.

Surely it already is, in that it's only one of those two teams that has ever won the SPL?

At least the EPL has a few teams fighting for the top spot, although I never imagined Spurs would be one of them!

Aberdeen were the last none-Old Firm winners, back the the 1990s ('92 I think).

It was longer than that Matt, 84/85 season I think Aberdeen won it. They were close in 92 though, last day 2 nil win for us at Ibrox against them won it if I remember.

Yep, we're finished no doubt, though Scottish football has been finished for years now.

Wasnt it when Sir Alex was at Aberdeen, he's been at united for 25 years or so!

I know there are many factors behind it, and it is nowhere near as severe as on the West side of Glasgow, but Celtic's profits are down significantly, from £7,000,000 to £180,000 in the last half of 2011:

The sale of Aiden McGeady last season gave the 'inflated' profit at CP last year, we're realistic in the fact that silly money was being offered for him and we could buy a few decent players and make a good profit out of any deal. The way of the 'modern world' in the SPL...come the summer James Forrest could be going 'south' as well for a similar fee I feel...:|

1985 was indeed the last time a team other than Rangers or Celtic won what is now the SPL. Aberdeen had a 75% win rate that season and lost only four games, accumulating a massive +63 Goal Difference in the process in what was Alex Ferguson's penultimate full season at the club. Rangers finished a distant 4th, with a dreaery and unspectacular Goal Difference of just +9. Perhaps more worrying is that they were closer to the drop than they were the title! Of course, with Morton in the top flight, and conceding 100 goals whilst there, that was never likely.

Rangers did however win the League Cup, so it wasn't all bad news. They would of course go on to lift the title a record-equalling nine times in a row starting in 1988-89 (with Graeme Souness and Walter Smith delivering the goods).

I see that the Portsmouth situation is also approaching critical again.
Anyone running the smallest corner shop knows that the first priority is to keep enough funds to pay the taxman. Yet again, football clubs - supposedly run by competent big businessmen - seem to be ignoring that simple rule. And Portsmouth cannot even blame it all on previous administrations - nearly a million of their debt is from this season.
The answer must surely be a savage restructuring of the game throughout the UK, weeding out those clubs that are not financially viable, setting non-football ground rules for the remaining clubs. If this means losing the high-status Premier Leagues, and staying out of Europe for a few years, so be it. If coaching reform could be introduced at the same time, it might herald a long period of success.
I suspect this would mean taking control away from the various FAs, though

I guess the title race is over then.

The whole of Scottish football is dying a slow, painful death at the moment. Peter Lawwell is living in dreamland if he thinks they can carry on as normal if Rangers go under; so much of the interest in our product comes from the derby matches.

The SPL is decided by who wins more of the old firm matches barring exceptional circumstances. English football is going down much the same track

Yes, but they have to do that because in technical terms they are virtually bankrupt.

Virtually all their income goes on paying debt interest and wages, and if they cannot maximise the money they make, they are going to have to start borrowing just to pay off the interest on the loans they already have.

When you are in that situation, you do anything to keep the revenue flowing in.

Meanwhile in Milan, the Italian police are looking for 11 footballers playing for the team from England called arsenal, who went absent without leave whilst supposedly playing against a very average AC Milan team. The police are concerned because the players went missing during the game. Arsenal lost 4-0.

So the Arsenal bandwagon goes on:
1. Worst ever start to a league season.
2. Worst ever first division defeat.
3. Worst ever European defeat.

The police have made a statement concerning their worries about being paid for the policing costs for the coming match, plus the remaining matches in the season.

I was hearing earlier on that they also owe other teams for ticket revenue too - this just beggars belief..What on earth has been going on up there? Something very corrupt i should imagine/want to believe.

As you know, I always look for your team's results, as they play in League 1 like Oldham Athletic. Matters most certainly do seem to have gone against you in recent matches. Our lot managed to build up a 2-0 lead at home against yet another team nearer to us to the "relegation cut-off zone", then decided to perform as they normally do at home (abysmally) and it was only a penalty save in the dying moments on the match saw us win 2-1 and gain three precious points.

People always say that football clubs only have themselves to blame for their financial situations but that is no consolation to the fans. It's the fans that have to watch their clubs dragged through the poo through no fault of their own.

Maybe in a strange way, for the good of football a big club needs to go under completley to send out a message but for the sake of the fans I hope Rangers are able to re-group. Same for Portsmouth, Darlo etc.

I guess I will get flamed for this, but isn't that an over-emotive argument that is akin to saying "RBS are too big to be allowed to go bust"? Either "the fans" are simply paying their money to be entertained, and, though part of this entertainment relies on the tribalism, they can join another tribe; or they are an essential part of the club - and must share the blame for what is happening at their club. At Rangers, I presume the fans were happy when a previous Chairman promised to spend double of whatever Celtic paid out; I presume they were happy to win trophies through spending other people's money rather than player development. And, before anyone asks what can a fan do - they can stop going to the games, just as they could withdraw funds from RBS before it went tits up, or they can stop shopping at Tesco if they disagree with its policies. I do not wish HMRC to continue to sponsor football clubs that are unwilling to operate in the real world.

Ahh Yes, the 'classic' 'For every £5 Celtic spend , we'll spend £10 then', maybe they should of added 'even if it's not actually our Tenner to spend'
Onto Arsenal, they were truly 'woeful' last night, looking like Wenger, although a true Arsenal Legend, has 'passed his sell buy date', sadly like the Great Brian Clough did at Forest, never good to see a 'Great' go so 'downtown'...
Anyone else notice how of a sudden Sky Sports News are now interested in the 'Europa League' now that United and City are in it? amazing...:(

Yes, that is typical of Sly Sports, who up until the parachuting of the Manchester teams considered the Europa League to be a joke competition.

I expect that it will be now hailed as the premier European tournament this season.
