How would we survive .... the logical extension of your argument would indicate anything could be construed as offensive, we have to draw the line somewhere.

No not at all. But we all know words or phrases that some people would be offended by and others wouldn't

After two consecutive defeats in which they conceded three goals in both games, having Vidic out all the rest of the season, having Ferdinand as only a shadow of his former self, plus worries about the goalkeeping position, Manchester United (mindful of the 1-6 home defeat) cannot look forward with any great confidence as to how the fulcrum of their defence will perform against Manchester City in the FA cup 3rd round match today.

News from the Blue Square Bet North League..Really the Conference North!!

Yesterday saw a reality check to the ambitions of Hyde FC (my side) and Stalybridge Celtic, the top two teams in that league who had opened up a large gap to third place recently.

Gainsborough Trinity 2...Hyde FC 0

Stalybridge Celtic 1...Droylsden 3 (A "Tameside" local derby match!!)

...it's a question of whether calling someone a Black Bastar*d is any worse than big eared or Scottish or fat - in my view it's not:p
The fact that someone uses 'black' as a qualifier to an insult suggests that the insult wouldn't apply if the subject wasn't black.
Fat people are not a separate race, not are big-eared people, nor are Scottish people. So to use those terms as a qualifier cannot be rascist.

Gainsborough are a funny team, they should be doing so much better with the level of investment that they've had. That said, we dicked them 1-4 on their own pitch (the first game I missed this season)

Definite red in my opinion. Both feet off the floor. Player not in control of the tackle.

Some tackles have to be made with studs showing. So long as they are not aimed at the player than it is not an offence. Kompany was not going for the man and was in control of the tackle. He won the ball and didn't even touch Nani.

If both feet are off the floor then the player is not in control of the tackle. Therefore its a red card offence. The fact he got the ball or wasn't aiming for the player is irrelevant if the referee deemed it reckless

A reckless challenge is not a red card offence. It has to be with excessive force. Page 8 here: http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/refereeing/law_12_fouls_misconduct_en_47379.pdf

If you read the document you will see there are 7 offences for which a player can be sent off.
Number 1 on the list is serious foul play.
The definition of serious foul play is "Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, side, or behind using one or both legs with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent.

Both feet off the floor counts as endangering the safety of an opponent.

I have just had a conversation with an ex Professional Referee who is now a TM at XC (he was the linesman when Cantona had his little episode !!) he said in his opinion it was a Red Card

If what you say is true, there should be an immediate FIFA enquiry into this matter, similar to other such offences involving referees in Europe. Until this enquiry is held, no British referee should be allowed to officiate in any matches outside Britain. Will it be the FA match official at the game who will make this decision?

FIFA should call the English FA to account over their lack of control that allowed a manager to have undue control over a match referee and any manager suspected of such misfeasance should be suspended from control of any team until the results of the enquiry are published. Any manager found guilty of such an offence should be banned sine die from football and the club should also be subjected to sanctions for allowing their manager to behave in such a manner, with immediate expulsion from participation from any European competition, as regards FIFA and EUFA, plus an immediate points deduction (to be agreed once the severity of the case has been proved) from the points they have already gained in that season.

I saw quite a few incidents that were much worse than the Man City player being sent off.
Ex professional players/ref`s will always have a difference of opinions to those that play, comment and ref now. I think Man City did well for 10 men, better than a lot of teams could have.

I don`t think Rooney should have man of the match.

What a player Kun Aguero is. In my eyes he is better than Rooney and Torres, probably the best striker in the PL.

Anyway, Roy Keane's bias in ITV's coverage is beginning to annoy me massively, give City some credit for their second half performance at least!

I thought City were going to score a couple of times in the last 2 minutes! Brilliant game, really thrilling, but Kompany's red card was never a dismissal. A few minutes later a challenge from behind by Ryan Giggs took out a City player's legs while City were on the break, and Giggs wasn't even booked.
Btw, I think bringing Scholes on was pretty daft. Anderson and Scholes in midfield when you've got 15 minutes to protect a 1-goal lead? Anderson always wants to attack and won't do enough defensive work, and Scholes can't go chasing Nasri and Aguero about the place on the break

I totally agree with you about the Giggs tackle. The ref looked at him and you just knew nothing was going to be done and it was so obvious he went for the man and not the ball.

I concur yet a transparent and open enquiry won't happen in my lifetime I suspect because Fergie can't have that many years left in him professionally and, more importantly, it suits everyone with power to maintain the status quo.

I'd be interested to see figures for penalties given/conceded or red cards across the clubs. Some can be put down to some teams having better players but I highly doubt what goes around comes around

I agree, hence my previous comment about the neutrality of refs. Giggs deserved a yellow and as for Kompany I thought it was a fair challenge.
I just wonder what would have happened if Mancini kept Silva and Johnson on at half time

IMO the game has been skewed, with the exception of fouling the keeper, in favour of attackers - you can't tackle anymore and having your hands anywhere is an instant penalty. That's not withstanding the world cup ball explicitly said to make it easier to score.

If only that was the only thing to annoy from ITVs football coverage, crap pundits, brainless commentary and the less said about Adrain Charles the better. Chuck in the usual technical cock ups that come with ITV as well and it all makes for desperate viewing. I think they should be ban from showing live football, both domestic and international, channel 5 could do better.

I wonder why there was so much injury time at Hillsborough? Something tells me jimmyowl1992 is rather tense at the moment

edit: Full time, the owls win 1-0

The less said about ITV the better. I, and my dad, stick the football on ITV HD on mute and use 5 Live for commentary

why mancini took off silva and johnson to bring on defenders beats me. apparently he wanted to avoid a drubbing. well it's a cup game, so if his team don't score three goals, they're done for, and there's no point using large numbers of defenders to keep the score at 3-0. he might has well just have put on a centre back, left silva on and played sensibly

However Zabaleta was excellent both defensively and attacking in the 2nd half and was his free kick that got them back into it. If his last minute free kick had bounced out to a city player he would have been the main reason they got a replay.

that was kolarov....zabaleta was good, but when savic came on they had a back 4 again anyway, and i wonder why mancini went for 5 defenders when he could have had 4 + an attacker, ie. silva

Just be aware that the radio is a couple of seconds ahead of the tv - can be useful if you're not really watching

Arsenal or Leeds away, are we ever going to be drawn at home? <(<(
