Cesc Fabregas equalises with 13 minutes to go, but after 4 matches played, Valencia are still top (3 wins/1 draw) and Barcelona are fourth (2 wins/ 2 draws).

Scottish Communities League Cup

Ayr 1....Hearts 1 (after extra time)......Ayr win 4-1 on penalties

For the match at Somerset Park, Hearts manager Paulo Sergio made no less than 8 changes to the team that had defeated St. Mirren at the weekend.

After a first half with neither side finding the net, it took just three minutes into the second half for Scott Robinson put Hearts into the lead, but Ayr had equalised through Gareth Woodlaw to leave the score level at 90 minutes. No further goals were scored in the extra-time period, taking the match into the dreaded penalty shoot-out and the Ayr goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert saved from both Danny Grainger and Rudi Skacel, culminating in Ayr winning the shoot-out 4-1.

This was the second Premiership side that Ayr had beaten in this season's competition, as they defeated Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the previous round.

Real Betis 4....Real Zaragoza 3

Roque Santa Cruz, on loan from Manchester City, scored twice in this match, which fluctuated after the Real Betis keeper was sent off when they were 4-1 up and coasting. Their reserve keeper then let two goals in within a two minute spell late on to make the score 4-3.

The result of this match sees Real Betis go top in La Liga (Played 4...Won 4) to go two points clear of Valencia CF, who drew 2-2 at home yesterday to FC Barcelona.

Brighton and Hove Albion 3.....Leeds United 3

Mackall-Smith (2) and Barnes (pen) scored for Brighton in response to McCormack (2) and Keogh for Leeds. Leeds were 2-0 up halfway through the first half, but Brighton gradually came more into the match as it progressed. A total of no less than 10 players were booked by the referee during this match.

Brighton are now in third place in the table with 17 points, whilst Leeds lie in ninth place with 11 points.

Everton had won 7 out the last 8 matches between these two clubs and it was goal-less until mid-way into the second half. Two of the introduced substitutes, James Milner and Mario Balotelli (just before the end) scored the goals in this early kick-off match to send Manchester City to the top of the Premiership, pending results from other matches this weekend.

Ah my bad, I thought Aldershot were playing away. I should have said they get to play against the filth

The City game was good, Everton played well and I'd put money on other teams adopting their defensive tactics against us in future as it did work. City also played well but I wouldn't have said they were as good as previous games, perhaps that was down to Silva being shadowed the whole game.

No quarter asked or given in some of the Scottish Cup (Round 1) matches played today. Four examples below:-

Dalbeattie 1.....Inverurie 6

No news as to Fort William who were supposed to be playing at home in the cup against Bo'ness. If their current form is anything to go by (beaten 8-1 away by Wick Academy last Saturday), they will have locked themselves in their dressing room and refused to come out to play.

I had a double today. Started with Racing Club Warwick 2-1 Bromyard Town AET in the FA Vase. Then AFC Wallingford 0-2 Crowmarsh Gifford in the North Berks League Div 1
1st game was good. Second not so. But 2 new grounds so happy days

News from La Liga

Barcelona 5.....Atletico Madrid 0

A Lionel Messi hat-trick capped a very impressive display by Barcelona who seemed to have put the dissapointment of the last drawn match to Valencia behind them. They have moved up to second place behind Real Betis with 11 points.


Real Madrid 6.....Real Vallecano 2

Not the impressive performance that the scoreline would suggest, as the away side scored in the first minute. Cristiano Ronaldo was passed fit to play and scored a hat-trick (which included 2 penalties). The match was still evenly contested at 3-2 in the second half, but the awarding of the two penalties seemed to dishearten the away side and Real Madrid, with good use of their substitues, took full advantage of the situation. They have moved up to fourth place with 10 points.
