More news. This time, it concerns Chelsea, who are apparently locked in a battle with Atletico Madrid to sign Genk's highly-rated keeper Thibaut Courtois.

I thought that Chelsea were well placed with goalkeepers already, so I thought I would follow this up in the European press.

Thibaut Courtois is only just 19 years old and is under contract to Genk until June 2014. He said, in an interview recently in a Brussels sports web :-

"No matter what may be said to happen, it will not happen now and as far as I am concerned, I will be wearing the jersey of Genk next season. If anything would happen after that, it will be in four or five years time"

I would disagree - since his skull fracture, Cech has gone from the best keeper in the world to above average. Hilario and Turnbull are back-ups which can be used in the League Cup and maybe once or twice elsewhere, they certainly aren't good enough for week-in, week-out jobs.

I AM NOT AT ALL SURE WHAT TO MAKE OF THE FOLLOWING.....

It was said that the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper, David de Gea, would not make any decision as to his future until after the European U-21 Championship. He played in the tournement which was won by Spain.

He may have received some injury and he might have heard that there was a heatwave in Britain that would ease his injury.

So why was he at The Bridgewater Hospital in Manchester on Monday? Surely it could not have been to attend a medical? And do we really know anyone in the Manchester area (besides Oldham Athletic) who are looking for a replacement goalkeeper?

Only time will tell........

Arsenal will move for Bayer Leverkusen ace Arturo Vidal if they lose Cesc Fabregas or Samir Nasri this summer.

According to reports in Germany, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who is an avid Bundesliga fan, is well aware of the Chilean's talent.

I think Fabregas will go but I hope Nasri stays.

Craig Gardner, the midfield player who scored 10 goals in all competitions last season, has left Birmingham City.

He has just signed a three year contract with Sunderland for nearly £6 million.

TRANSFER NEWS CONCERNING SUNDERLAND

As well as the item above, Sunderland have signed the 20year old South Korean striker Ji Dong-won from Chunnam Dragons on a 3 year contract for an undisclosed fee. Sunderland had this player watched at the 2011 Asian Cup where he scored 4 goals in the tournement. In a short internaional career, he has scored six goals in only 11 appearances.

Earlier this week, Sunderland had finally concluded the transfer of Connor Wickham from Ipswich Town.

Chelsea's bid of only £4 million was dismissed out of hand as Genk have put a minimum value on the player of £8 million.

Perhaps Chelsea had only brought the "petty-cash box" with them for their bid rather than a certain Russian gentleman's cheque book.

Yes. Im gutted Hibs missed out on him, we were in for him too. Its a no brainer though. Who do you go to? Hibs who have a long history of paying poor wages to players then sell them on for an amazingly high fee albeit we have no debts or Birmingham City who have cash on the hip.

If memory serves, if convicted the maximum sentence for money laundering out here is 14 years imprisonment and a hefty fine.

This may all end up being nothing more than an accounting error or something completely innocent of course. He is innocent until proven guilty.

Scott Carson, the WBA goalkeeper, has looked eastwards to Turkey to further his career prospects by joining Bursaspor (fee undisclosed).

He is only 25 and this is not a great age for a goalkeeper and the chance to play in the Europa League in the coming season attracted him to make this move.

I think that they were unlucky to the extent that they seemed to be playing at a good enough standard throughout the season to not be relegated, and it all boiled down to the final day. I personallly think Wigan should have been relegated not Birmingham, due to performance throughout the season.

If anything Blackpool were unlucky to go down. Birmingham had plenty of time to arrest their slump in form and IMO the sum of 38 games and playing each time both home and away is sufficiently large to ensure that the effects of luck are minimal/negligible.

Besides everyone knows Fergie has bought up the league's supply of "luck"

Correct me if I am wrong but the measure used to gauge a team over the whole season is the amount of points you have after 38 games.
After 38 games they had not gained more than Wigan so therefore over the season Wigan were the better team. And at least Wigan try and play decent football.

I think that giving three points for a win, rather than the old method of only giving two points, is an incentive in both relegation and promotion in football, especially when games near to the end of the season are being played.

I was presenting my opinion, and in my view Birmingham were a stronger team than Wigan for the most part of last season.
