Birmingham City won 2-0 against a tough Exeter side.

I was there, a fair trip for me on a Tuesday night but I loved it. Cool ground with the big terrace at one end and the club giving the first 30-50 away fans through the turnstiles a free hot drink was a great touch.

Blues were imperious last night and didn't need to get out of second gear. The change of shape to 3 at the back worked really well and the Jay/May 2 up top pairing might finally be the way we can squeeze both of them into the starting XI without one of them having to play out of position as a #10.
We've not been very clinical all season and yesterday was the same, should've been 3-0 at HT and Exeter wouldn't have had any moans.

I thought they were poor tbh, and I expected much more from them especially in front of a full house. 2 touches in the Blues box is all they had, tells the story of the game really.

BBC Sport match report says:
The Pilgrims were second-best for much of the game…..’
Another insightful gem of journalism from the BBC.

Rooney quoted afterwards as saying the youth team would have done better than the first team last night. Well, if he isn't the manager, they might be

How him, Gerrard and Lampard have secured management jobs in the top two divisions in England and Scotland baffles me. Merely having been good at football is not enough!

Tim Walter has been sacked by Hull City. He replaced Liam Rosenior after last season & leaves the club in relegation trouble.

Manchester United fans are unhappy after the club raised the cost of all members match tickets to £66 for the rest of the season. Manchester United Supporters Trust & Everton supporters are set to stage a protest about ticket prices ahead of their game on Sunday.

Leicester have got rid of Steve Cooper and all his backroom team.
Replaced by Ruud van Nistelrooy. Another potential crazy appointment by Leicester, would he even had been thought of if it hadn't been for a few games as caretaker at OT?

He managed PSV and won them the cup in his one year in charge before walking out because the board wouldn't give him any cash. He's a highly thought of coach.

Well tbf Lampard did OK at Everton and not an entirely awful job at Chelsea. Gerrard won Rangers the league after 9 years of Celtic dominance.

Rooney at least has worked his way up, he wasn't just given manager roles. Player coach at Derby before taking the job fulltime and keeping them up despite having to play a team of mostly academy graduates because of major financial issues. He also did OK managing DC United, nearly managing to get them into the playoffs despite having the smallest budget in the league.

I wasn't that against his appointment at Blues, his record certainly was better at the time than he got credit for and I was completely finished with John-Eustace-ball, but it never worked out and we were awful under Rooney. Though he certainly isn't solely to blame for our relegation last year, 10 years of underinvestment, poor recruitment and stagnation had just as much impact as well as Rooney did as well of course Mowbray's unfortunate illness.

He has got Plymouth to around where I expect they hoped they would be, their sole aim this season will be to stay in the Championship and I think they will. There re worse teams that Plymouth in that division. Rooney suffers from over-scrutiny because of who he is, every loss will be exaggerated (OK a 6-1 pumping is bad but it's not like that every week), but it's Plymouth Argyle, they're not going to win every week, they're a tiny club for the division they're in.

His main drawback as a manager is that because he was such a naturally gifted footballer I think he struggles to come to terms with the fact that not all players will be able to do what he is asking of them like he could easily when he was playing.

his main issues are that he is a potato who can barely speak English and isn't a very good manager.

EDIT - I also think "great" players seeking to move into management have to understand thier skill as a player counts for almost nothing. They need to be humble enough to acknowledge the need to learn, actually try to learn and bring with them good coaches to both mentor them and more importantly actually run the training ground!

EIDT 2 - they also need to research clubs sensibly and avoid the basket case clubs and also not be scared to walk out if agreed terms are not met. PR will be on thier side if they walk because the owner has gone back on his transfer kitty promises.

Speaking of former players turned manages: Lampard appointed head coach at Coventry. That will end well.

Former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard has been appointed head coach of Championship club Coventry City on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Lampard, 46, takes over with the club 17th in the Championship table, two points above the relegation places.

He replaces the long-serving Mark Robins, who was sacked after seven years in charge earlier this month, and becomes the first new appointment made by Sky Blues owner Doug King since he completed his takeover in January 2023.

Yeah, but its commutable from west London so it suits him for a year or so until he's sacked and paid off.

The British Managers Lunch Club will be pleased though - a straightforward destroy and exit and then money money money money!!!!

Top players not being good mangers is not new. Bobby Moore and Billy Bonds were never good managers. I think they expected too much of players who didn't have their ability.
Then there was Harry Redknapp who never coached but bought a player to do a specific job and when he didn't he bought another one so that when he left clubs they had huge squads and no money. I think David O'leary was another at Leeds.

Which is complete nonsense as almost all managers are ex-players.
Perhaps you did not understand the point that I attempted to make, which was that the type of man-management skill essential to a football manager are those which are not needed by players during their playing career.

Does this wording clarify what I was attemepting to say.

TNS 0 Djurgården 1

With some 2,000 Swedes in attendance on this cold dry tea time, this felt more like Stockholm than Shrewsbury. The visitors never stopped singing from beginning to end and even included a version of Ewan McColl's "Dirty Old Town", a popular anthem at Salford and FCUM. And who could blame them? Unlike Stockholm, Shrewsbury has wonderful pubs selling proper beer which costs less than half the fizzy rubbish sold in Sweden. Many of the 2,000 missed the kick off at Shrewsbury's newish out of town stadium..

Djurgården now ground share with Hammarby. Their recent derby was suspended after 75 mins after Djurgården fans wouldn't stop letting off pyrotechnics. The game was completed the next day in an empty stadium.

Shropshire based TNS had to seek a special dispensation from UEFA to play in England as there was no stadium in Wales meeting UEFA requirements which was available for their 3 group stage home games. Nevertheless the highlights were only shown on the Welsh language S4C channel with no English subtitles.

The FAW are trying to persuade Merthyr to defect to the LoW which seems unlikely as they are nearing promotion to NLS. Meanwhile Cardiff, Newport, Swansea and Wrexham are contemplating entering the Welsh League Cup if the FAW agrees to the winners getting a Conference League place. Vaduz from Liechtenstein, who play in the Swiss League, get in by a similar back door.

The game itself was very tight. TNS were excellent defensively but had very little possession and went behind just before half time. They failed to exert much pressure in the second half not getting a corner till the 93rd minute.

TNS have now played 12 European games, losing six, drawing three and winning three. And they are still not out of it. Not much jeopardy in UEFA's fiefdom. I normally watch Welsh sides in Europe in July with many games, ironically, moved to TNS's ground which meets guidelines for the qualifying rounds. I never expected to have to wait till late November for my first.

Would UEFA agree to that though, especially bearing in mind qualification rules were changed a while back so Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham can now qualify for Europe through English competitions? Swansea did so when they won the League Cup in 2013.

The Liechtenstein situation is different
in that the cup is the only route into Europe for Liechtenstein based clubs, much the same as the Welsh situation 30 years ago prior to the formation of the League of Wales.

Bristol City had a very easy 4-0 win over Plymouth today.

Plymouth are now averaging under a point per game and have the worst goal difference in the division, having lost 50% of the games they have played.

Yet some still think Ruiney is "doing a good job"!

38 conceded in 18 league games. a -20 goal difference and losing 50% of their games played.

If the directors of Plymouth want to retain their championship place they need to make a change now, or they will be relegated.

Despite Plymouth being one of our (Oxford United) rivals for relegation from the Championship, I actually feel a little sorry for Wayne Rooney; He is an example of why being a brilliant player does not automatically lead to being a brilliant manager. And some of the chants directed at him and his wife from opposition fans are just vile.

Yet another defeat for the Gingerbreads. Same old, same old... Last week the gaffer commented in his post-match interview about a lack of collective responsibility from the players.

For the first thirty minutes today they played as a team and took the lead. Though conceding just before half-time didn't help. Into the second half and we looked a different team again. A lack of creativity, a willingness not to chase the ball and gave the opposition too much space. Failing to defend in added time saw the home side take the lead and all three points. The day was made worse by two of the sides above us also losing.

We had the opportunity to make ground and close the points gap, but failed to do so!:frown:

In season 1983/84, Wrexham reached the Welsh Cup final and as a result, and after a bad winter, were miles behind with their D4 season. Halifax Town played their last match on Fri 11th May beating Colchester 4-1 to go 7 pts ahead of Wrexham who still had three games to play. Wrexham won and drew the first two leaving them needing to beat Tranmere on Mon 21st May to avoid going cap in hand. Tranmere had nothing to play for and made little or no effort in going down 5-1. I know, I was there.

Halifax and Wrexham thus finished level on 48 pts but Wrexham had the better goal difference. Thus Halifax had to apply for re-election while Wrexham qualified for Europe despite losing the Welsh Cup final to Shrewsbury. It didn't strike me as fair.

Radlciffe 1 v Darlo 4

Three first half goal of the season contenders saw Darlo run out easy winners. For once this season we actually took some of our chances! A really good performance and result AND we came form behind to do it!

York City up next in the FA Trophy - what could possibly go wrong?

Mickleover FC 2 ... Macclesfield Town 1
HMS Urinate the league has hit some choppy water!

F.A.Cup draw tonght, as a Pompey fan I hope we draw Liverpool away, a good day out and we can concentrate on staying up.
Worst draw would be at home to a non league club who would probably beat us!
