Legendary commentator John Motson, who had an illustrious 50-year career with the BBC, has died aged 77.

Motson covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals for BBC Sport before retiring from the organisation in 2018.
Popularly known as 'Motty', he had worked on Match of the Day since 1971.

"It is with great sadness we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today (Thursday)," said a statement from Motson's family.

Half time has been 15 minutes since 1995, starts when the last player / official reaches the dressing rooms, and ends when the ref sounds the bell to summon the players back to the pitch, so from whistle to whistle it'll always be more like the 17 - 19 minutes you quote

Indeed. My partner is a season ticket holder at Sunderland and whilst they’re doing pretty well this season and punching above their weight, the Mackems know it’s just a question of time (and money, lots and lots of money) now

The mags are disliked by almost all NE football fans! They think they are a big club instead of a bang average Premier league club. At least until the blood money flows............

Don't have the figures but for that time a fair haul no? Top 15 in the country would be my guess

But again let's not let any reality get in the way....let's select the one season in the Third Division in their entire history. I won't say I enjoyed the Third flight but the Second flight was always fun to be honest. Lots of games and goals.

I do love the "big club" chat, it's a concept I really don't understand. I'm a sheep look at how good I am, very odd.

A true fan supports their team no which league they're in, and only gross mismanagement or severe ethical violations by an owner can break that bond. Even a club collapsing and having to restart further down the pyramid won't do it. I'd have thought regulars on this thread would know that as much as anyone.

It's easy for me to say I wouldn't want the investment arm of some Gulf state to take over the club I support, but if it actually happened I'd probably be just as chuffed at the thought of competing for big prizes as the Geordies are.

Whether I'd go as far as going to matches dressed like a sheikh is another matter though!

You are the one trying to claim City are a big club and don’t deserve to be criticised for their complete transformation by dirty money. You’re the one pointing to their ancient historical record, not me. I was making the point that City were a small also-ran outfit when they were purchased.

Your top scorer the year before the money came was Elano with 8 goals in the league, finished mid-table, as you did the previous couple of years.

I will cease supporting Liverpool if Qataris or cheats of a similar ilk ever purchase the club. I’ve already got quite bored of top lever football because all the chat is about money anyway.

Hmm pretty sure most fans are Villa around where i live and its in Birmingham.

There’s no such thing as a de facto big club. Liverpool weren’t a big club in 1961. They are a big club now though.

There’s nothing wrong with money coming into the game as long as people don’t cheat. That’s what City have done, systematically, for a very long time. It’s also what Newcastle will do now they have similarly distasteful owners who want to use the football club - and the support - as a vehicle to avoid criticism of their behaviour.

I wouldn't go as far as @PsychoMouse in saying most are from outside the city but IME they are in the minority. Having lived in various areas of the city they definitely seem to be outnumbered by blues fans, that was even the case when I used to live in Erdington which you'd think considering it's proximity to the ground would be solid Villa territory.

Well a lot more poorer and socially disadvantaged people have moved to Erdo over the last couple of decades, so probably more Villa fans around here now.
