I could certainly see Southgate giving Page a helping hand by picking a second-string XI for the final game... it'll be Austria v. West Germany all over again! ;)
If you look at the England squad players, all of them are highly skilled, otherwise they would not have made the final selection, so to talk of a second-string XI as being not good enough in terms of competing is a tad hopeful....

The best foul of the last century has to be Benjamin Massing’s foul on Claudio Caniggia in the 1990 World Cup.

That was a great foul. Poor old Caniggia hurdled a few wild challenges and then Massing stepped in and absolutely flattened him

Now that really was the foul of the century. Forget anything else by Vinny Jones, Chopper Harris etc.
I thought the French lad made a meal of it. Went down a bit easy.

The lad has gone for the ball there Gary and to be honest i think he got some it. The Argie lad went down like he had been shot. Look at him trying to get a fellow pro sent off. shocking.

Love how two others have a go at him but the third decides he really WONT get past!

I think in Ronglish* this is known as "Putting the reducer in".

* Ronglish is, of course, the version of English spoken by Ron Atkinson, predominantly when he was on commentary duties with Clive Tyldesley.

I'd argue its the worst foul
Oh no, definitely the best. Absolutely brilliant foul.

If you want a bad one, try this one from Josip Šimunić (he of Graham Poll's three yellow card trick) in a Croatia vs Serbia match.

I wasn't suggesting that they wouldn't be good enough, just that there's a scenario where one of the home nations could do another a favour. Even leaving a 1982-style conspiracy aside, it wouldn't be ridiculous to rest some of the first-choice starters in a game that (depending on what happens tonight) could be pretty much a dead-rubber for England.

Really disappointing effort there from Netherlands, thought they could go and kill the game off but, oh no, let's keep passing back. Like to say they're saving themselves for the knock-outs, but no, that's probably as good as it gets. On the plus side it would take a miracle for them not to qualify so another 8-9 days for Memphis to get fully fit, and plenty of teams ahve starte sluggish and gone on to win, but this lot? Nah.

That's getting home from the pub in Bolton on a Friday night.

A bit dull and uninspiring tonight from England, but we’re still in a strong position :)

Leeds’ Tyler Adams had a great game for the US and they looked much improved generally on previous tournaments.

The dull performance may calm expectations somewhat however.

At least we know Maguire is good after all.

A chance for England to waltz through to the knockout rounds but they reverted to type. Easy to pin the blame on the tactics etc but so called international class players couldn't do the basics. Kanes headed miss at the end summed the performance up. Shabby.

Hm. I think that was a game you could look at in a few different ways. Yes it was dirge to watch, but from a USA point of view did they see it as a game against a big team that they threw everything at and weren’t far off from winning?

We clearly ran out of ideas tonight but we live to fight another day and may well finish top of the group. Personally I don’t think we’ll progress much further this time unfortunately because the key players that Southgate shows loyalty to just don’t seem to be on their game.

We’ve had it pretty good over the last few years as England fans so I’m happy to see how it goes and if this is the end of a mini era then that’s just the way it is. Southgate isn’t the best tactically but he has improved things massively and I appreciate what he’s done.

it is no different from performances in other tournaments (Scotland game anyone) so i don't think it is that much of surprise that England gave one of their usual dire performances! In the Euros we qualified from the group with 2 x 1-0 wins and a complete zzzzz fest of a 0-0 v the jocks.

In 2018 we were runners up in the group and the Tunisia game we won 2-1 was hardly a classic. England were poor in that game to and got lucky.

I think the point is that this is just normal England! The problem is i would have preferred the poor game to be a 0-0 against Wales as the Taffs will be well up for their cup final.

Yeah I must admit that I would have liked us to have turned over the USA this evening but that’s just not how it goes when everyone’s fighting for their life to stay in a World Cup. Wales were dreadful today yet on Tuesday they may well be right up for it against us.
What will be will be and I’m not expecting too much which is more enjoyable than usual actually!

As we now know, yesterday's result has ended any chance of England taking it easy against Wales, intentionally or otherwise! However some first-choice starters could indeed be 'rested' (ie dropped); What on earth has Gareth Southgate got against Phil Foden?

When a team is awarded a corner kick, why is it so essential for the player to place the ball as far out of the extreme perimeter line marking as the odd inch or two surely cannot make any difference. The rules should make it clear that the ball should be placed on the actual line marking.

I put Foden in the same category as Grealish. Nice touches here and there, flashes of trickery but doesn't do enough to hurt teams at the highest level. Hoping both of them make me eat my words of course.

If he is not picked as a regular member of the England starting XI and given regular full 90 minutes match appearances in the England team, the ability to hurt teams at the highest level cannot be fully judged.

When he has been given an opportunity he's not really shone in my opinion. Although to be fair neither have others picked ahead of him. However he's not screaming out for selection like some players ignored in the past were. We have to remember this England team has not really been in very good form the past year or so. They reverted to this form last night and I suspect they will do the same against Wales. A draw is fine of course but it will be a case of hoping we improve form than expecting we will.

By the way, already some of the footballing establishment suggesting we looked 'tired'. I thought this was the WC where that was no longer a valid statement?

Without wanting to start an argument I think time has played tricks with your memory, in relation to the Tunisia game in Russia.
A last minute winner can appear fortunate but England played very well that night, creating numerous chances and Tunisia were lucky to still be within touching distance of us come the winner.

On a more general point I thought it was a decent game last night the US played well, above their level, we were ok defensively but the first 10/15 and the final 20 or so aside, poor from a creative point of view

It's a point gained and qualification is still in our hands.
Couple of changes for me on Tuesday, Foden would start in place of Saka and Grealish for Mount.

The law is already really clear. Part of the ball has to be either in the quadrant or overhanging it.

The reason players put the ball as far out as possible is so that if it’s an out swinging corner there’s less risk of the ball going out of play and back in

Because it is then furthest away from the flag, which is an impediment to kicking the ball.

Football is a funny old game: Hereford 1 v Darlo 2

back up to second in the league after an away win we didn't deserve. Awful performance from Darlo yet somehow 3 points loaded onto the bus home. We deserved nothing and should have got stuffed.

We never get anything at Hereford and today we stole something! 2 shots. 2 Goals.

EDIT: First win at Hereford for 26 years.

Dreadful from Exeter City today
Oxford United 4-1 Exeter City

We are out of the FA Cup with a shocking performance against the team a couple of places below us in the table. It was 1-0 until late on when they scored 3 quickfire goals before we got a consolation a minute after their fourth.

We seem to be having another bad spell again.

I'm going to our match on the 10th December against Sheffield Wednesday. It doesn't look hopeful for us.
