I take it this quote above is from the "Alternative Laws of Association Football" that are so well imbued in every football supporter rather than the official Laws that match officials are expected to know in full and to pass their examinations, before being allowed to officiate at matches.
I am old enough to remember certain Leeds United supporters who claimed that some of the Norman Hunter tackles were nothing but "good, honest Yorkshire defensive play", so such matters of supporters beliefs are nothing new. You could actually be said to carrying on an English football tradition.
