Why do I expect Man Utd to try and do well in the Europa League this year? (With the prize of a champions league spot in the group stage if they win it)

Spurs crash out, never mind

Spurs currently drawing 1-1 with Gent at Wembley, they need to score two to progress........but Dele Alli has just been sent off. Disgraceful challenge, tried to 'do him'.

Alli would do well to listen to Half Man Half Biscuit's "I Went To a Wedding":

You can't put your foot up in Europe
You can't show your studs on the 'nent
They take a dim view
Of a slightly raised shoe
So think on if you're up against Ghent!

In the Netherlands it is said that a new coach brings a shock to the team to win the next match. Well; it is not always true here!

With Leicester and Ranieri it's a sad end to a fairytale... but if they get that "new manager bounce" it will be remembered as a good decision. Apparently DW is 5th-or-6th favourite, but can't imagine he'd give it much thought given that he turned down Wolfsburg.

Shame. Leicester were doing well in Europe, and if they get the right manager then things don't look good for Hull.

Well it is ain't as bad as to loose 1 - 4 and 7 - 1 as AZ (Netherlands) did over 2 games in Europe.

14th: AFC BOURNEMOUTH

Reasons to be optimistic

Despite being weakened by injury, Bournemouth has a strongish squad, with a manager who looks the real deal. Eddie Howe has brought this team up from League One and will not let them be relegated easily.

Howe's the squad?
Patchy. The team has a leaky defence, which has suffered ever since Nathan Aké left. Bournemouth has strength in central midfield, but Jordan Ibe and Max Gradel have not lived up to expectations this year. Josh King will be integral to their survival hopes.

Can they survive relegation?
Probably. The nucleus of this team has come up through the leagues, and, while a few (such as the injured Callum Wilson) could receive transfer offers from other Premier League teams, the squad would remain mostly intact and could lead a promotion charge next time round.

15th: SWANSEA CITY

Reasons to be optimistic

Swansea are a changed side. Paul Clement is the man responsible for the side's big turnaround in fortunes. This does look like a team on the rise.

How's the squad?

It contains some undeniable quality. Lukasz Fabianski, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente are all good players, Luciano Narsingh and Leroy Fer provide some Dutch strength on the flanks, and Alfie Mawson is finding his feet at centre-back. The next few weeks could be interesting for Swansea.

Can they survive relegation?

Yes and no. It doesn't seem likely that Llorente and Narsingh, among others, would be all that happy to play in the second tier. While Sigurdsson and Fer have been with the club for longer, the four could expect some tempting offers upon Swansea's possibly relegation. It's likely, however, that not all would leave. And Routledge, Britton, Mawson, Amat etc. would all likely stick around.

16th: MIDDLESBROUGH

Reasons to be optimistic

Aitor Karanka is a good manager. The Boro squad has quality, with Alvaro Negredo, Gaston Ramirez, Cristhian Stuani, Adama Traore, Stewart Downing and Viktor Fischer all reasonably talented. The defence and defensive midfield is built around a core of Adam Clayton, Bernardo Espinosa, Grant Leadbitter, Adam Forshaw and Calum Chambers, and Victor Valdes brings serious international experience in goal.

How's the squad?
With all those names you'd think that Boro would be packing goals this season, but no. They're just not scoring. Ramirez has fallen out of favour, and Downing's not starting. Karanka's tactics of a rather fixed 4-3-3 - with Stuani and Traore the widemen - doesn't allow anyone to bridge the gap between the striker and midfield. But then Karanka has faith in his tactics, even if the rest of us don't. Ramirez, Downing and Fischer will be key come the business end of the season - and hopefully for Boro fans there'll be a 4-2-3-1 lineup soon.

Can they survive relegation?
Financially, the answer is probably yes. But I doubt that the likes of Fischer, Negredo, Valdes and Ramirez would be comfortable in the 2nd tier.

17th: LEICESTER CITY

Reasons to be optimistic

Leicester may have just sacked their only Premier League-winning manager, but they shouldn't give up hope just yet. They're still in the Champions League with an away goal but, more importantly, survived from an even worse position (bottom at Xmas) two years ago with a similar squad. Speaking of which...

How's the squad?
N'golo Kanté's gone. That's the big issue. Wilfred Ndidi solves part of the problem, but Danny Drinkwater still has to drop back and screen the defence, when he should be putting balls in to Jamie Vardy like Leicester did so well last season. Riyad Mahrez has looked a shadow of his former self. And the defence is leaky - the left side needs shoring up (Ben Chilwell, anyone?) and maybe Molla Wague should be given a go in the centre. Just something different.

Can they survive relegation?
Financially I'm honestly not sure. But I imagine that most of the squad would stay.

18th: HULL CITY

Reasons to be optimistic

Two words: Marco Silva. The Portuguese has basically revolutionised Hull. He's revitalised players like Tom Huddlestone and under him the team has been playing well.

How's the squad?
Snoddy may be gone, but Andrew Robertson, Sam Clucas, Curtis Davies and Michael Dawson anchor what is possibly the league's best value-for-money squad. Despite being ravaged by injury, there have always been bright spots. Eldin Jakupovic has been a revelation in goal. Harry Maguire and Andrea Ranocchia have shone in central defence, Omar Eladellaoui and Ahmed Elmohamady provide options at right-back, and there's a good selection of midfielders and forwards. The signings of Elabdellaoui, Ranocchia, Lazar Markovic, Goebel Evandro, and Oumar Niasse could be instrumental, and buying Kamil Grosicki could honestly be the best of the lot. Time will tell, but things look good.

Could they survive relegation?
The hub of this squad has been hardened by relegation and has stuck together. All those loan signings would probably go, of course, but I'd expect the majority of the squad to stay. Financially, the answer's probably yes as well.

19th: CRYSTAL PALACE

Reasons to be optimistic

They have the currently unrelegated Big Sam. But then, there's a first for everyone. It was Rafa Benitez last season.

How's the squad?
This squad is very strong. Steve Mandanda, Scott Dann, Christian Benteke, Wilfred Zaha, Yohan Cabaye...there's depth as well. But individual performances have been very weak and flaky in a lot of cases.

Could they survive relegation?
Probably, though I'd expect a large exodus.

20th: SUNDERLAND

Reasons to be optimistic

They've done it before, riiiiiiiight???

How's the squad?

Aside from Defoe and Pickford, pretty weak. And Lamine Koné, but he wants to leave anyway. Apparently the atmosphere's toxic.

Could they survive relegation?

Would players leave? Aside from Defoe and Pickford, probably not. And Lamine Koné, but he wants to leave anyway. Even Seb Larsson's probably had enough by now.

Financially...erm. I have doubts.

Boro have a very clear plan: a pragmatic, defensive based system designed to grind out results and get just enough points to stay up via keeping clean sheets. Karanka wont change that.

Negrado is isolated for long periods but is lazy and doesn't always put a shift in. Downing is getting on and Ramirez had a paddy about something so Karanka dropped him. He wont have any messing about. Do it his way or do one is his central message.

What matters is staying up and their low -8 goal difference might be important come the end of the season. They only have that ( and its miles better than anyone near them) by being boringly pragmatic.

They have Palace away tomorrow and a win for either side would be, as they say, massive.

I haven't posted about us (York) for a while but nothing has chnaged.... we're going down. Results have not been good enough and despite having a much improved squad on paper, results have not improved. It now looks like a case of when not if we go down and I can't see the club surviving like Stockport (a club with similar stature and size) have done going to semi pro so the future of the club looks very dark indeed. The new stadium looks no closer than it did 5 years ago. We have a FA Trophy QF tomorrow against Brackley Town. I can see us winning the FA Trophy and getting relegated liek Halifax did last season in all honesty.

Spurs are easily the dirtiest team in the top flight- by quite some considerable distance- but they get away with it week in, week out in the Premier League. I don't understand why referees here don't clamp down on their cynical rotational fouling, I really don't, but glad European referees are a bit better at it.

As for Ranieri, between foreign owners who wouldn't know a football if it was shoved up their colon and the financial cost of relegation, it's hardly a surprise what happened. I was going to put a tenner on Leicester to go down at the start of the year but didn't think odds of 10-1 were good enough: this is why the odds were so short.

Rostov won and lost from Bayern Muenchen, lost twice from Atletico Madrid and drew twice with PSV Eindhoven. Last round they won and drew with Sparta Prague.

Maybe its best for Ranieri to have gone now. He's gone out as reigning champ, rather than a relegated manager.

Scottish Premiership

Inverness CT 2...Rangers 1

This is only the fourth win in the league for Inverness CT this season and the result of this Friday fixture sees them move off the bottom place in the league.

Rangers still remain in third place, six points behind Aberdeen, but now having played a game more.

2 points dropped at Barnsley, their keeper will not have to buy a drink all night tonight. Newcastle also dropped points, but managed to salvage one after being 2 down at home to Bristol City. At least the gap hasn't grown, but it really should be 2 points less- just hope Reading can beat Brighton tonight.

Oh well, on to Citeh on Wednesday in the cup now...

Oldham 0-0 Millwall

Amazing ended to this match where Millwall was award penalty in 89th mins but thankfully Latics goalkeeper Ripley saved Gregory's shot then in 93rd mins Millwall were award other penalty and again Ripley saved Gregory's penalty shot.:D

Parfrom that last five mins game sound like it wasn't great game to watch and lucky this match even went ahead given how much rain have falling in Oldham area in last 72 hours.

Bishops Cleeve 1...Winchester City 0 (Bates 34)

Winchester City have a mountain to climb to reach the playoff places after losing at Bishops Cleeve. City were denied a stonewall penalty in the first minute after Craig Feeney rode a foul and was brought down just outside the six-yard area; the referee, inexplicably, gave City a direct free kick just outside the penalty area. Bishops Cleeve took the lead with a header when Joe Bates got on the end of a cross and City never got out of gear.

Other Results:

AFC Totton 2...Didcot Town 1

Bideford 2...Wimborne Town 0

Bridgwater Town 0...Barnstaple Town 3

Evesham United 1...Slimbridge 2

Hereford 2...Swindon Supermarine 0

Mangotsfield United 1...Tiverton Town 2

North Leigh 2...Larkhall Athletic 2

Salisbury 3...Paulton Rovers 1

Taunton Town 2...Yate Town 0

Wantage Town 0...Shortwood United 2

League Table:
1. Hereford 33/86
-------------------------------
2. Tiverton Town 32/69
3. Taunton Town 30/64
4. Salisbury 31/62
5. Evesham United 32/60

6. Mangotsfield United 31/58
7. Swindon Supermarine 31/52
8. Bideford 32/52
9. Winchester City 30/50

Poor Southampton.

Is that a comment on their inability to score more goals from so very many chances that were created by them. I have never seen as many as good balls into the box being ignored, especially those that came from crosses from the left wing. As I said recently in the Rugby Union thread after the Wales v England game, all the pressing in the world means naught if there is no end-result. However, it was good to see that all five goals in the game that were scored were all excellent in their execution.

The old football adage certainly rings true even today...
"Take your chances, win your matches"

A really bad result that might have finished off our chances of a play off place although other results went our way. We were reduced to 10 men early on and gave some silly goals away but created enough to earn a point. We have Fylde and Salford still to play away form home so it will be really tough for us now.

I also withdraw my comments on Boro. They were terrible on Saturday and are going down.

Leicester win their first game post Ranieri beating Liverpool 3-1.

Poor Liverpool, slipping out of the top 4, probably not to return

As you may have guessed from my avatar, I am one of the many who find that beer, football and trains go naturally together. Fortunately I now have a senior citizens railcard (and a bus pass) otherwise train travel might now be prohibitively expensive, particularly at lower levels where the number of late postponements makes the purchase of advance tickets rather risky.

I ended up at the aforementioned Oldham vs Millwall game as my plan B on Saturday, but was forced to drive. I notice that Lee Gregory finally managed to score from the spot tonight.

It was bad of Millwall to miss one penalty against Oldham last Saturday near to the end of the game but they then compounded the mistake by missing a second one...

Oldham under the management of Sheridan have put together a most remarkable run of results and their form continued last night with a 2-1 away win at Northampton Town. They are still out of the bottom four and now have 39 points.

I still follow your results since our respective teams fortunes saw your team rising and that of Hyde United waning, but how have matters changed of late for you. You won 4-1 away at Harrogate Town, when you played them at the end of last October.
