One thing the BBC and ITV coverage has is common is that they're incapable of talking about the game they're actually covering for even 15 minutes at half time.

I'll be getting my stopwatch out at half time to check how much coverage is devoted to the game in question

Hi,

From the story as told on BBC breakfast this morning, it seemed quite clear that everyone felt it was the Russians and that the English were pretty much blameless. I seem to recall they stated the Russian Sports Minister as expecting a fine from UEFA as a result.

I certainly saw no evidence of anyone trying to blame the English on the reports i saw!

Most likely Russia will be fined £10 and UEFA will come up with some random charge and fine the English FA a lot more

Unless it's England. They give Wales five minutes when it's Wales V Russia. I wonder if they will be able to talk about Wales without patronising us.

As a non-English person that has been a bug bear of mine for years. Regardless of what game they are covering it'll always be turned to England at some point during half time.

Cmon, take off the tinfoil.

England were booted out of Europe for storming fans at Heysel. Let's see what they do to Russia...

As for Rooney, I thought he and Dier were excellent in midfield last night. Sterling was a waste of space, picked solely because he's a "£50m footballer", he did absolutely sod all. Lallana wasn't a great deal better, but at least he was in a position to miss all those sitters.

A positive start, but we need to take our chances because our full backs are our weak link, especially Rose.

On 14th June, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will hear three specific charges made against the Football Union of Russia:-
Crowd disturbances...............Article 16 (2) of the Disciplinary Regulations
Racist behaviour...................Article 14 of the Disciplinary Regulations
The setting off of fireworks.....Article 16 of the Disciplinary Regulations

I am somewhat concerned that you feel a fine of only £10 would be imposed and I can quote the result of a UEFA similar hearing on only one of these charges stated above, the setting off of fireworks under Article 16, led to a fine of £11,000 being imposed by UEFA on Liverpool very recently as a result of incidents in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund.

That's not really the case though.

English fans were guilty of many many acts of hooliganism and violence in the years running up to Heysel. It was the final nail in the coffin.

Perhaps, but this isn't exactly an isolated incident from the Russians, is it?

I'd agree with everyone else: Russia will get a piddly little fine and UEFA will get back to calling hooliganism a purely English problem.

The fact that the Russians hot pyrotechnics and a flare gun into the stadium troubles me the most though. Good job it was a hooligan and not, say, ISIS.

No, you are correct when you say it isn't the first time that Russia have been involved in something. It won't be the last either, I can see it kicking off up in Lille/Lens on Wednesday and Thursday as well.

For their part in trouble at Euro 2012 Russia got a €120k fine and a suspected 6 point deduction. IMO, the punishment will be higher and the points deduction will not be suspended. They will start the 2020 qualifiers on a negative total.

What happened last night inside the stadium was unbelievable. After the violence in the streets I had assumed that there would be hundreds of stewards and police to keep the fans apart. It was mental there wasn't. As for whoever was doing the searches not doing them properly, well that beggars belief unless the flare launcher could be stripped down into separate parts and was smuggled in by more than 1 person.

How about kicking them out of the competition all together and starting them with a 6 point deduction in the group stages in Euro 2020? If UEFA are serious about clamping down on hooliganism then some tough actions will send out an effective message.

I think that it is a case of money talks I'm afraid.

To cancel the 2 remaining Russia games would mean they would have to refund all the ticket money back, then we have TV and radio contracts that were signed for a specific number of games and would need to be refunded as well as the sponsorship money paid for those games.

Have Russia play its other two group games behind closed doors

How much would that cost UEFA?

The stadiums for their next 2 games hold about 85k combined so you would probably be looking at around £4.5m?

I just don't see UEFA being willing to throw away revenue like that. The only is all they care about.

Maybe fine them a large chunk of their prize money, Russia got €8m for qualifying, and a points deduction?

Fine the Russian FA an equivalent amount to cover any losses. That'll do it.

I think money is just a small part of it, more politics than anything.

I will reply simply by asking how much is a human life?

If the gentleman that is critical dies, things have to be taken to the extreme and Russia either eliminated from the tournament or made to play behind closed doors

I hope he makes a full recovery.

You can't hold the Russian FA accountable for something that happened outside of the stadium though.

If you were to do that where would the liability end? The railway station? The nearest airport? Just being in the country?

Seems to happen with the FA with English fans, so why not?

Russian fans, and I use the term loosely, turned up armed to cause confusion, terror and, in some reported cases, aided by the French police

I agree, I think Rooney is better deployed in a midfield position where he's had a few good games recently. Both him and Dier played well last night, which was good to see, the latter's free kick which he scored from was excellent. I personally think Milner should play ahead of Sterling, especially based on last night's poor performance from the latter.

I don't think either of the two full backs were particularly good last night either, how Clyne is second choice right back I'll never know. Playing with just one striker didn't work for me either, hopefully Sturridge and Vardy get some playing time at some point.

When has that happened? Not being difficult, it is a genuine question. If there is already strict liability in place where the Russian FA can be held accountable for the actions of fans away from the ground then I'll be changing my opinion.

Our FA has been fined before for the actions of its fans.

Russia itself was fined the last time there was a Euro.

There is, therefore, a precedent for country FAs to be fined for the action of their fans

From that article the UEFA said "The RFS was facing charges for the improper conduct of its supporters (crowd disturbances), the setting off and throwing of fireworks and the display of illicit banners at last Friday's UEFA Euro 2012 Group A match against the Czech Republic in Wroclaw" so that was for inside the stadium unless I missed something.

They also were fined a small amount and warned about what happened outside too...

Added a second link you might want to look out showing last night's game

No charges against the English FA, which tells us UEFA see it all as Russian trouble.
What worries more is Russia hosting the next World Cup having seen the behaviours of their fans repeatedly in recent years.
Banning fans won't help, as they'll then have 25000-30000 Russians on the street rather than in a slightly controlled area

England and Russia both warned by UEFA that any more trouble and they'll be thrown out.
