That did rather take the sting out of our own cup exit!

On the other hand, the cynic in me wonders if Ciellini has been taking backhanders to avoid falling foul of FFP rules..*

*= Not that breaking FFP has any real impact on clubs: no problem with a transfer embargo when you've already signed players on crazy wages, likewise a relatively small fine to clubs with filthy-rich owners. Points deductions should be compulsory otherwise clubs that DO comply are effectively being penalised. [/rant]

Actually getting your attack to put the ball into your opponents net as many times as possible is more to the point than looking at the performance of match officials, as proved by Brora Rangers in the new Highland League season, with 21 goals in their first three games. Even if the penalty had been awarded, are you 100% confident that you would have scored from it? Aston Villa did not have all that many shots on target in the match.

How well do you think the Aston Villa attack will perform this season?

Of course it is but when match officials seek to spuriously deny opportunities to do just that how do you propose we try it? Like it or not the actions or inactions of match officials often have a tangible result on the outcome of a game.

Ever wondered why the BBC and other pundits can manage to keep stats on pretty much everything except how many favourable officiating decisions each team gets? My answer to that question is that they don't want to due to their own bias.

Even if the penalty had been awarded, are you 100% confident that you would have scored from it? Aston Villa did not have all that many shots on target in the match.

One can never be 100% sure with a penalty kick but it cannot be denied that more penalties are scored than missed. Doesn't mean we shouldn't have been given the chance.

It's a concern, we sold our only proven goalscorer. I've not seen much of the new signings but Gabby is more of a support player than a goalscorer. We missed at least two good chances to score outside the not-penalty.

With regards to the game I have no reason why Sinclair was taken off when we were at our best in the game

Winchester City were unfortunate to be held, in part due to a Yate player calling for offside whenever City went forward and also the denial of a stonewall penalty in the final minutes.

As first matches of the season go, I suppose that Hyde United after consecutive relegations from the Conference Premiership and the Conference North, would not be too disheartened by a 2-2 home draw against Grantham Town.

It will be a long struggle to return back to a more senior league level, though.

A disappointing start to the season for Darlo yesterday. We lost 2-0 at Buxton through some sloppy defending. It is early days in a new division with several new players ( one of whom was carried off early with concussion) and the loss of a a couple of key players from last season including our former captain who left for family reasons.

You don't get the captain of Manchester United saying he cant play because he wants to spend time with his kids. Good on him.

The reef seems to have missed a blatant penalty just before half time with the score at 1-0. Ho hum.

For longer than I care to remember, the number of postings made upon this thread complaining that a penalty was NOT awarded to the side playing against the supported team of the poster and stating that it was a clear-cut penalty that everyone but the referee saw are about as numerous as "hens teeth"....

I thought that was a very strange decision to disallow Bournemouth's goal because I personally cannot see how on earth it was a foul. I think Liverpool are doing alright so far but they need to improve on both performances if we want to finish in the top four and win a trophy. For me Liverpool have to win something and qualify for the Champions League this season without fail

I'm hoping Sheffield Wednesday finish in the top ten this season and with performances in the early stages of this season in the Championship and the League Cup it looks like it could be possible. We're playing much more positive football compared to last season and we've signed some really good players. With seven different goalscorers in three matches it's looking really good for The Owls so far

I felt last night 0-0 or 1-1 would have been fair. We played well but not quite as clinical as we needed to be, while Liverpool were dangerous whenever they went forward. To have both major decisions go against us was seriously unlucky, but then it is just one game. I just hope we don't end up relegated short of a point.

I think so too - both teams played well and Bournemouth deserved to get at least a point of the match. I really hope that they avoid being relegeated as they've been a pleasure to watch so far and they certainly deserve to be in the Premier League without any shadow of a doubt

In our game the Bournmouth goal should have stood and ours was offside. The Cherries looked really good and, admittedly, after only 2 games it is weird to see them second bottom and us in the top three. Early days though.
