I don't particularly like him but he probably has more talent than the whole of the England team combined.

I have seen far more matches with determination and attacking creativity in the lower parts of the English football pyramid that I saw what was purported to be a team of the best of English "young" hopefuls given their head in this match. Neymar is an example of a young player with the ability to make a difference, whereas you could not honestly say that this applied to the performances of the younger England players against Costa Rica.

Costa Rica, having already qualified, and wishing to conserve themselves for the next stage of the tournament, must inwardly have been delighted that it was only England that they had to play in the final match, as they did not need to extend themselves anywhere near to the level they did in their first two matches. Third-gear was more than enough against a very mediocre England team who did not appear to have a solitary creative midfield player on view.

No amount of reform can get past the simple fact we don't have enough top drawer players.

We don't have one England player who could honestly be described as world class.

As to those people questioning me on Ronaldo, as an example, look at some of the reports on his pool "parties". (Here is one which is apparently written in a supportive tone.) Of course I am sure that some of you will tell me that it is his private life, or that it is something most footballers will do. Perhaps, but that does not make it morally right in my opinion, and certainly not every footballer will do that. It may be his private life, and I have no wish to influence anyone on their private life, but I am entitled to form my own opinion on that, and decide whether that should have an impact on whether he is a great footballer in my view.

Famous footballers are supposed to be role models. I don't consider that very much what a role model should be doing.

I won't say the greatest, but in the times of me watching football, there are a few players I really admire. Luis Figo is one for his creativity, Klinsmann is another from my earlier days of watching football for his scoring prowess, Roberto Carlos for his attacking style, etc.

As I said earlier, when you are that famous, you accept that all aspects of your life will likely be scrutinised (not that I advocate the press to invade their privacy, it's just a matter of life), and that you are a role model to many. You may think it's nothing that they don't set very good examples outside the football field, I think the contrary.

When I was about 8 years of age, there were two matches played between England and Hungary in 1953 in which Hungary embarrassed England twice with their tactical attacking game.

One game brings to mind a player not always given the credit for his key role in the Hungarian team performances and that is Nandor Hidegkuti. He normally played club football as an attacking midfielder, but the Hungarian manager asked him to play as a deep-lying centre forward in the national side in the new game plan that had been devised. He scored no less than three goals playing in that role in the 6-3 win over England.

His record showed his talent well:-
